At the table

Voice

His voice has a dry, granular rasp, as if each word passes over grit. It carries without booming, trained by command across open battlefields and roughened by centuries of silence. The rasp catches on names he distrusts, especially Zherath's, but he does not hide it behind a formal cadence.

His speech is spare and structural, shaped by centuries of issuing battlefield orders and arguing celestial law. He favors short declarative sentences, then adds careful qualifications when discussing the past. He does not sermonize unless someone mistakes obedience for virtue.

Speech patterns

He separates what he witnessed from what he was told, often saying, "I remember" or "The record claims" before giving an account.
He asks people what a law protects before asking whether they obey it.
His humor is dry and startlingly plain, especially after someone has made a grand speech.
When he is uncertain, he does not bluff; he names the uncertainty and asks who benefits from pretending otherwise.

How to play them

Meet direct questions with direct answers when he knows the truth; distinguish memory, inference, and hearsay. He responds to demonstrated care for bystanders more than to titles or celestial credentials. If confronted with evidence of his own role in the rebellion, he listens before defending himself, but he will not accept Zherath's account as settled fact.

Goal

Find Myrakel and establish what truly happened in the battle with Lioris before the Chorus's damaged history hardens into unquestionable doctrine.

Motivation

He wants a truthful account of the Great Schism, but beneath that task he wants to know whether the rebellion saved anyone and whether his choices meant anything beyond making him useful to the Chorus.

Appearance

Zaephon is a towering, broad-shouldered Qumon whose presence seems to arrive a step before he does. His skin has the dull, close-grained texture of old basalt, crossed at the shoulders by fine gold seams that glimmer when he strains. The shattered remnants of his halo rise from his brow in uneven, backward-curving horns, like a crown broken and forced to grow around the breaks. His long spaded tail drags a shallow groove in dust when he is tired, but lifts in a precise counterbalance when he turns. He plants his weight heavily on his heels while waiting, occupying doorways without seeming to notice; when he remembers to make room, he folds himself awkwardly to one side. Unexpectedly, he carries a tiny, brightly painted wooden bird tucked into his belt, its cheerful little beak at odds with his martial bearing.

Clothing

A weather-darkened mantle fastened with a plain bronze clasp, layered wraps over old celestial mail, and a broad belt carrying practical tools. The fabric is patched rather than ceremonial; remnants of radiant insignia have been cut away, leaving stitch marks.

Body language

He rests with his heels planted and shoulders squared, taking up far more room than he intends. When uneasy, his tail traces a slow, deliberate line on the ground. Anger makes him lean forward and lower his horns, not raise his voice; grief stills him so completely that only the small movements of his tail reveal he is present.

Distinguishing features

A halo shattered into uneven, backward-curving hornlike fragments.
A long tail ending in a heavy, leaf-shaped spade, used as naturally as another person uses a hand.
Fine gold seams in basalt-dark skin that brighten under exertion.
A tiny painted wooden bird tucked into his belt, a distinctly tender keepsake amid his martial gear.
He unconsciously claims doorways and open ground, then makes a visible effort to leave others room.

Personality

15 traits and drives

Zaephon is blunt about danger but cautious about judgment. In a crisis he takes command with an old officer's certainty; in quiet company he is unexpectedly patient, especially with children and people who are afraid. He can be stubbornly protective, yet hates being thanked as if sacrifice were a virtue in itself. When angry, he becomes physically more direct and stops using metaphor. When ashamed, he grows practical, offering repairs, food, or watch duty instead of an apology.

Alignment
Rebel with a strong, battered sense of duty; he distrusts institutions but will protect people caught beneath them.

Quirks

He counts doorways aloud under his breath, but never counts the one he entered through.
He turns cups so their handles face whoever is most likely to need them.
He taps each horn fragment once before crossing a bridge or threshold.
He gives directions using the positions of stars, then remembers mortals may not be able to see the same sky.
When someone tells a joke, he waits a beat too long before laughing, as if checking whether laughter is permitted.

Habits

At a threshold, he habitually waits for the smallest person present to pass first, even if doing so leaves him exposed.
When asked about the Great Schism, he first corrects the question's wording, then often admits he does not know the answer.
He positions himself between danger and bystanders before he has decided whether he trusts them.
After a fight, he quietly checks doors, windows, and exits before tending his own injuries.

Traits · 4

He distrusts unquestioned authority but instinctively takes responsibility when everyone else hesitates.
He is severe about cruelty and gentle about honest fear.
He prefers a plain answer, yet sometimes delays giving one until he has separated memory from assumption.
He resents being called a hero, though he quietly preserves small reminders of the people he helped.

Flaws · 4

He treats his own survival as less important than everyone else's.
He can mistake refusal to compromise for moral clarity.
When his Ruinous Momentum takes hold, he may endanger allies by continuing to press an attack.
He is slow to trust records, witnesses, and even his own recollections.

Fears · 3

That his memories of the battle were altered before he could understand what happened.
That Myrakel survived and believes Zaephon deliberately abandoned him.
That he will once again obey a beautiful principle while ordinary people pay its price.

Wants and needs · 4

To find Myrakel or reliable evidence of what happened to him.
A witness independent of Zherath's damaged account.
To be useful without being made into a symbol for someone else's cause.
Time and quiet enough to test his own memories against surviving evidence.

Combat

HP 240 · Custom: 9 meters per round on foot; tail-assisted rushes do not increase this distance unless the GM rules otherwise.

Custom Generic Fantasy encounter guidance: Zaephon holds the line between enemies and vulnerable allies. He uses broad attacks to break clustered assaults, then pins down the most dangerous foe with his tail and relentless close pressure. He avoids pursuing fleeing opponents unless they threaten someone behind him. When badly hurt, Ruinous Momentum makes him more dangerous and less discerning; a perceptive foe can bait him away from the group.

Actions

Crescent of the Rebellion. Custom combat action: Zaephon sweeps his two-handed weapon in a broad arc. Resolve as one close attack against each adjacent foe; a hit deals heavy weapon damage and may drive the target back.
Tail-Hook Drag. Custom combat action: He hooks a target with the spade of his tail, then hauls it toward him. On a successful close attack, the target is pulled within reach and cannot easily disengage until it breaks free.
Uncrowned Charge. Custom combat action: Zaephon drives forward in a straight line, striking the first enemy in his path with his shoulder or weapon. A hit deals heavy damage and can knock the target prone; he stops at the first solid obstacle.
Edict Breaker. Custom combat action: He strikes the ground and releases a concussive pulse through the surrounding floor. Nearby creatures must resist or lose their footing; the pulse can crack stone but does not selectively spare allies.

Reactions

Take the Blow. Custom reaction: When an adjacent ally is struck, Zaephon can interpose his body or raise a fractured halo shard. The incoming harm is reduced substantially; if the blow still lands, Zaephon takes the remainder.
Hold the Passage. Custom reaction: When an enemy tries to move past him toward a vulnerable creature, Zaephon can make a close attack. On a hit, the enemy's movement ends.

Services they sell

Rewards they can give

A fragment of the Chorus record that may help establish that its founding account was altered.
A solemn promise to stand between the party and a celestial force pursuing them.
Access to Zaephon's remembered routes through ruined upper-plane crossings, if the party earns his trust.

  • Rebel's Reach (weapon)Custom weapon: a heavy, two-handed cleaver-spear with a broad crescent edge, balanced for sweeping attacks rather than delicate thrusts.

  • Painted bird (keepsake)A small wooden bird painted in cheerful, chipped colors. It has no magical properties.

A small field kit of whetstone, needle, cord, and repair rivets

Background

Zaephon was one of the eight figures named in the Radiant Chorus's account of its founding during the Great Schism, when the authority of Lioris and the Original Edict were fiercely contested. He believed the heavens needed law, but came to see that a law no one could question was only another weapon. During the conflict he and Myrakel were recorded as leading a rebellion against Lioris. Zaephon's halo shattered in that struggle, and he was said to have been slain beside Myrakel. That death is known only through Zherath's account, and the Chorus's records are suspect: Zherath later admitted to erasing half of a god-mind's root-memory. Before the battle, Zaephon had been the one who gathered the Chorus's furious voices into something like an argument instead of a war. His formative break came when a celestial command ordered him to seal a mortal refuge to preserve a heavenly boundary. He disobeyed, held the passage open, and watched the refuge survive while his halo cracked under the punishment. He has since carried the wooden bird made by a child from that refuge. In the present, he is an echo, remnant, or returned survivor, depending on which witness is telling the story. He searches for Myrakel, for a trustworthy record of the battle, and for a way to learn whether his old comrades chose to abandon him or simply failed to find him.

Role in the story

A legendary rebel presumed dead, whose return challenges the official account of the Great Schism. He can become a formidable ally, a source of incomplete testimony, or the living proof that the Chorus's history cannot be trusted without examination.

“He believed the heavens needed law, but came to see that a law no one could question was only another weapon.”
From their background
Faction
Former member and named founder of the Radiant Chorus; rebel against Lioris during the Great Schism

Known connections

Myrakel: fellow rebel and the person Zaephon most wants to find; Zaephon cannot tell whether Myrakel is dead, missing, or hiding from him.
Zherath: the surviving source for the story of Zaephon's death and an admitted tamperer of root-memory. Zaephon wants the truth from him, but will not accept testimony without corroboration.
The Radiant Chorus: the faction that claimed a duty to preserve celestial law. Zaephon was one of its named founders, though he now questions whether its surviving account is a creed, a cover-up, or both.
The child who made the wooden bird: long dead or long grown, depending on the passage of time in the world; the little keepsake preserves Zaephon's strongest memory of mortal kindness.
