Gunnar Svan
Gunnar Svan
At the table
Voice
A chest-forward, work-worn voice with a dry rasp from cold air and shouting over clatter. He places weight on verbs and measurements, as if every sentence has to move something. Laughter bursts out rough and bright, then often ends in a brief jaw-clench.
He speaks with a local Saxon accent, using short, practical phrases shaped by warehouse work and the habit of calling instructions across noisy spaces. He favors words like 'steady,' 'mind the weight,' and 'that'll hold.' His jokes arrive in a matter-of-fact tone, which makes them land harder than he intends. When he speaks of his old life, his phrasing turns oddly specific, as if reciting a work procedure he can remember better than the people he left behind.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Give Gunnar a concrete task and he becomes dependable quickly. Treat his jokes as a bid for connection, but tell him plainly when they hurt. He responds better to shared work than speeches, and trust grows if others let him help count supplies without making him solely responsible for them.
Goal
Help the Seven Marks find a defensible place to shelter without becoming the person who secretly decides who deserves food, fuel, or safety.
Motivation
To be useful enough that the Seven Marks keep him, and to learn whether the heat in his blood is a warning, a curse, or something he can choose to master.
Appearance
A handsome, severe-faced young man with the stillness of someone listening for a load to shift. His clothes hang a little wrong on his newly strong frame: a patched wool coat cinched with mismatched cord, sleeves rolled to different lengths, and one carefully darned shoulder where a strap keeps rubbing. His teeth are unusually even and broad; when he laughs, he shows them all at once, then clamps his jaw shut as if embarrassed by the sound. He walks with a porter’s measured, heel-first care, testing the ground before trusting it. People notice the odd impression that he is both ready to carry them and quietly weighing what they are worth.
Clothing
A patched charcoal wool coat with an over-cared-for leather shoulder strap, rough shirt, work trousers, and boots repaired with mismatched soles. He keeps a length of cord wound around his belt and wears no bright colors.
Body language
He keeps his shoulders squared under weight and rests his hands open on his thighs when trying to seem harmless. When frightened, he rubs his palms against his trousers as if they are damp; the fabric sometimes warms beneath them. Around stores, his gaze lingers on barrels, tools, and fuel stacks, and his jaw works once before he looks away.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesGunnar is generous with his back and stingy with his trust. He will take the heaviest load without complaint, then make a joke that makes the tired laugh and the grieving feel mocked. In ordinary company he is brisk and wry; when someone is hurt, he becomes practical and almost tender, finding water, cloth, and a way to carry them. When frightened, he gets chatty and keeps glancing at the stores. He wants to be a decent man, but fears that his usefulness and his greed are growing from the same root.
- Alignment
- Neutral, inclined toward protecting the fellowship but wary of anyone claiming authority over it.

Combat
AC 11 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Gunnar avoids a fair fight. He tries to put a load, doorway, cart, or other obstacle between danger and the people he is protecting. If cornered, he swings a hand tool once or twice, then retreats while covering someone else's escape. He is brave when a companion is trapped and much less brave when danger is merely abstract.

Background
Before the impossible awakening, Gunnar remembers warehouse shifts: stacking sacks, counting barrels, and learning that a badly tied load can kill someone. He came to himself near the Harz Mountains in Saxony, in a strong young body, wearing rough clothes and speaking with a local accent he had never learned. He found the Seven Marks by following smoke to their camp and volunteered to carry water, then stayed because the fellowship needed hands as much as it needed hope. His first winter with them changed him. When a storehouse roof collapsed in sleet, Gunnar dug through the wreckage until he found a trapped child and a cache of lamp oil; the child lived, but Gunnar's palms stayed hot for hours, and the sight of the oil made him want to keep it all. Since then, he has tried to turn fear into jokes and usefulness. The jokes sometimes land like insults, especially with those who have lost homes or kin. He is close to Svala, a blunt-minded scavenger who trusts his work but not his appetite for supplies, and protective of little Tove, a displaced child who follows him around the camp. Their fellowship is short on dry fuel and divided over whether to keep moving or risk settling near a ruined mill. Gunnar has quietly begun separating useful metal and pitch from communal stores, telling himself he is only making an emergency reserve.
Role in the story
A grounded companion and a source of uneasy warmth in a desperate survival story. Gunnar can make the fellowship feel like a scrappy adventuring party, but his jokes conceal fear, his useful strength has limits, and his private hoarding may turn a shortage into a crisis of trust.
“Since then, he has tried to turn fear into jokes and usefulness.”
- Faction
- The Seven Marks, a displaced survival fellowship; he is a laborer and morale-maker, not a leader.
