At the table

Voice

A dry, airy rasp with a salt-wind roughness, able to carry a command across a deck without becoming a theatrical shout. Years of haggling have made his words nimble; years of working in weather have left the edges grainy.

His voice has a dry, airy rasp, shaped by salt wind, shouted deck orders, and years of bargaining in noisy ports. Consonants come clipped when he is counting or warning someone; jokes stretch out with an easy, rough-edged lilt. His name is stressed unexpectedly: ta-VREK.

Speech patterns

Uses dry jokes to delay a direct promise or soften a hard refusal.
Talks in practical comparisons: wind, cargo, weather, and what a person can carry.
Calls people by their job until he has decided they are safe to know personally.
When making a serious offer, states exactly what he will do and avoids promising what he cannot control.

How to play them

Begin with a joke or a practical question, then quietly assess whether the visitors respect the crew and keep their word. He responds well to useful candor and shared risk, poorly to inherited titles or pressure to swear loyalty. Offer information in measured pieces; he does the same.

Goal

Find the people who financed the Broken Coil curse and learn whether it can be ended without putting Kressa or the Emberwake in their reach.

Motivation

Keep his chosen family alive while finding a way to face the past without letting it dictate who he owes his future to.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A lean, strong humanoid with the long balance of someone raised among moving decks. His silver-white scales have an abalone sheen, and fine gold veins shift faintly beneath them when he breathes or stands in dim light. He moves as if a swell is passing under his feet: loose in the shoulders, weight always ready to travel, never quite still. Within a minute, most people notice the little brass tide-gauge he wears on a cord, its rim polished bright everywhere except for one deep thumb-worn groove across the lower edge. He rubs that groove when deciding whether to trust someone. The unexpected detail is that he keeps a tiny, carefully mended paper kite tucked inside his coat, an odd keepsake for a hard-lived pirate.

Clothing

Loose salt-stained linen beneath a weather-beaten leather coat, with soft boots suited to wet planks. His scales are mostly covered by choice, though his forearms and throat show their pearly sheen. A single gold earring is shaped like a small dragon's fang.

Body language

He leans as though compensating for a deck's roll, even on steady ground. His gaze keeps returning to windows, doors, and the horizon. When uneasy, he drags his thumb along the worn groove in his tide-gauge; when truly angry, he becomes intent and economical, setting his feet before he speaks.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Easy grin, guarded heart. He can be generous with food, labor, and danger, yet slippery when asked for a promise. Around his crew he is warm and teasing; with strangers he treats charm as a tool; alone, he becomes methodical and broods over old choices. He dislikes cruelty but can be ruthless when he believes hesitation will put his people at risk.

Alignment
Pragmatic and self-directed; keeps faith with his crew and sister, but distrusts institutions that demand loyalty without earning it.

Quirks

Taps a rhythm against his thigh in uneven groups of three, then changes the rhythm if anyone notices.
Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Names ropes by the job they did last, then apologizes to them when cutting one loose.
Keeps the paper kite carefully dry, but lets his own coat soak through before sheltering it.
Smells unfamiliar food before tasting it, even when everyone else has already eaten.

Habits

Counts provisions by touch while listening to a conversation.
Takes the position nearest an exit, then acts as if he chose it for the view.
Makes jokes when a decision is overdue, but stops joking the instant a crewmate is in danger.
Shares food and useful gear without comment, then avoids any discussion of what the gesture means.

Combat

HP 118 · Custom Generic Fantasy reference: quick on foot and sure-footed on rigging; no canonical movement rate assigned.

Avoids a fair stand-up fight. He uses cover, height, ropes, and distractions to break enemy coordination, then targets weapons or escape routes. He prioritizes protecting Kressa and the crew over capturing a prize. If cornered, he uses Furnace Breath to make space and retreats toward a route he has already checked.

Rigging instinct. Tavrék can climb rope, spars, and rough ship structures at his normal movement rate.
Quartermaster's eye. he can quickly spot a missing supply, a tampered seal, or an item deliberately placed out of order.

Actions

Boarding Cut. Custom maneuver: Tavrék makes a close-range cut with his narrow boarding blade, then shifts to a nearby position. Treat as a dangerous but controlled melee attack; on a strong success, the target is also off-balance.
Rigging Bolt. Custom maneuver: Tavrék makes a precise ranged attack with his hand crossbow. He favors disabling a weapon hand, a rope, or a piece of rigging over a lethal shot.
Furnace Breath. Custom maneuver: once per encounter, Tavrék exhales a short fan of superheated breath. It scorches a small area directly in front of him and can ignite dry rope or canvas. This is a custom heritage ability, not a canonical Drairesse rule.
Look There. Custom maneuver: Tavrék uses a feint, a thrown object, or a sudden change of elevation to create an opening for himself or an ally. On a strong success, one nearby foe is distracted until their next turn.

Background

Tavrék was born to the last Vareth-Om, a Drairesse line whose old standing mattered more to creditors and curse-brokers than it did to hungry children. When the Broken Coil curse took his mother, the household scattered: Tavrék and his sister Kressa escaped by sea, while kin and servants vanished into rival ports. He learned ropework and storeskeeping aboard a merchant vessel, then joined piracy because a crew could be chosen and a contract could be left behind. A boarding action went wrong when a captain ordered the crew to abandon trapped deckhands. Tavrék disobeyed, hauled them free, and earned the jagged scar on his left forearm for it. The experience changed his idea of loyalty: he will risk himself for people who stand beside him, but will never again mistake rank for worth. He now serves as quartermaster and negotiator aboard the Emberwake, while Kressa commands the ship. Their affection is real, but they argue over whether the Broken Coil can be broken by force or only outlasted. Tavrék is also quietly trying to learn who financed the curse's first ritual. A former shipmate, Jorren, has begun selling fragments of that history to interested buyers, and Tavrék does not know whether to confront him or use him.

Role in the story

A slippery but dependable maritime ally, source of information about the Broken Coil, and a potential guide into the family conflict behind it. His choices can turn a straightforward voyage into a question of loyalty, evidence, and what it means to stay.

He learned ropework and storeskeeping aboard a merchant vessel, then joined piracy because a crew could be chosen and a contract could be left behind.
