Ylva Velkhyr
Ylva Velkhyr
At the table
Voice
Low and resonant, with a chest-deep hum and a dry rasp shaped by cold air and shouting over wind. When agitated, the scales at her throat give off a faint static crackle. She speaks with brisk, grounded clarity, then lets humor slip in sideways when she feels safe.
Her voice has a low, resonant hum, as though sound catches briefly in her chest before leaving. It carries a slight rasp from cold air and years of calling across wind and rigging. Her words are clipped and practical when planning movement; with people she trusts, a dry warmth enters her jokes. Agitation adds a faint crackle of static around her, not a change to her speaking volume.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Give her room to move and present choices rather than demands. She responds to practical honesty, clear boundaries, and shared exploration. Earn trust by keeping pace without trying to possess or direct her. If the party shows concern without making it a bargain, she may linger longer than she intended.
Goal
Find all thirteen meteor shards associated with Dravareth, learn why her egg was preserved for centuries, and discover what the twin-birth prophecy means before others decide her role for her.
Motivation
To turn the mystery of her origin into a choice she makes herself, rather than a destiny assigned by the Velkhyr, the prophecy, or the forces watching from the sky.
Appearance
A long, sinuous humanoid with a mostly human face, a narrow jaw, expressive brows, and steel-blue scales that look like dark meteorite polished by rain. Tiny white sparks shift under their surface, especially along her temples, collarbones, and knuckles. A line of small swept-back horns frames her hairline rather than hiding her face. She stands with one heel lifted and most of her weight poised over the balls of her feet, as if a sudden turn is already underway. Even at rest, she checks the clasp at her left wrist with a claw-tip, again and again, without seeming to notice. In cold air a thin frost haze clings to her shoulders. Her stride is nearly silent until she changes direction, when her claws tick once against stone. The unexpected detail: she carries a little bundle of carefully mended children's mittens, which she patches whenever she has to wait.
Clothing
A close-fitting charcoal travel coat with split tails, weatherproof trousers, climbing boots with replaceable claw guards, and a layered harness for tools and shard cases. The wrist clasp is plain and repeatedly repaired. Her clothing is designed to move cleanly on rigging and narrow ledges, with no trailing ornaments.
Body language
She favors edges and elevated surfaces, rests with one heel raised, and turns her whole body toward routes out. Her left wrist clasp receives frequent unconscious checks. When listening closely, she goes very still for a beat, then shifts position as though the stillness itself has become uncomfortable.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesYlva is quick-thinking and highly adaptable, yet chronically restless. She can improvise a route through a collapsing ruin with exhilarating confidence, then dodge a simple conversation about where she will be next month. She is fiercely attentive to immediate danger and surprisingly patient when teaching a practical skill, but she withdraws when care starts to sound like ownership. In a good mood she is teasing and generous; when anxious she becomes brisk, jokes too sharply, and keeps moving. Her smile arrives quickly, but her eyes keep searching the horizon.
- Alignment
- Independent, protective of people in immediate danger, and suspicious of institutions that demand permanent obedience.

Combat
HP 68 · Quick on foot; custom Meteor Break allows a curved relocation of up to 20 paces once per round, as described in abilities.Uses terrain to divide opponents, force overextensions, and create curved escape routes. She strikes, relocates, and makes pursuers choose between following her or protecting their formation. Against an anchor or restraint effect, she changes direction unpredictably and attacks the mechanism or its operator. On flat ground she becomes impatient and is more likely to spend her advantage early. She avoids killing foes who can be disarmed or left behind.

Background
Ylva Velkhyr emerged from a cryo-reliquary beneath Nyssorith after an unknown void resonance stirred an egg laid roughly four centuries earlier. The Imperial Registry recorded her birth on the same Lumturn as Draventhis, though the two were born under very different circumstances. On the night she emerged, a green-white streak bent sideways over Sonoe. Velkhyr elders called it an omen; priests called it trespass. As a child, Ylva could not complete lessons or ritual circles without leaving them. At twelve, during a disciplinary duel, she first triggered Meteor Break and shattered the courtyard. The event changed her elders' approach: they stopped trying to contain her and taught her to aim. She has since made a life among cliff paths, rooflines, ship decks, and fractured ruins, where her restless movement is useful rather than disruptive. She is searching for the thirteen shards said to have fallen from Dravareth's Dragon Constellation. A wandering Herald of Stasis hunted her for weeks, seeking to anchor rather than kill her. Their clash carved spirals into a canyon; the Herald withdrew, but marked her in the sky. Her mentor Sesh, a practical Velkhyr pathfinder, still sends warnings and route notes. Ylva keeps a wary correspondence with Thessa, a registry archivist who helped her read the sealed record of her emergence. Draventhis remains the other half of the twin-birth prophecy, and Ylva does not know whether to seek them as kin, rival, or warning. Her present problem is that each shard she finds draws more attention from watchers who may consider her a cosmic instrument rather than a person.
Role in the story
A mobile ally, rival, or cosmic-mystery catalyst whose search can draw the party into the meteor-shard quest and the conflict between freedom and enforced permanence.

- Faction
- House Velkhyr, though she keeps its formal authority at arm's length; currently acts independently in pursuit of the Dravareth meteor shards.
