At the table

Voice

Her voice carries the dry rasp of cold air through wool, with consonants shaped to carry over rain and ferry ropes. It stays steady in ordinary conversation, but a sudden threat makes her take a sharp, catching breath before she speaks. She does not soften her voice to show anger; she becomes more precise and presses each disputed term as if setting a boundary stone.

Her voice has a dry, breath-shaped rasp, as if each word has passed through wool and cold air. Years of ferry work left her used to calling over rain and rope creak, so she places consonants firmly and never wastes a phrase. She sounds measured rather than soothing. When rattled, her first inhale catches and the next sentence comes out clipped, with each condition carefully named.

Speech patterns

Frames requests as terms: "What can you offer, and what must remain untouched?"
Repeats important promises in plain language, then asks the other person to correct any mistake.
Uses short, concrete sentences when frightened, with a dry catch in her first breath.
When angry, she argues the boundary at issue with greater force and specificity rather than raising her voice.

How to play them

Begin with clear boundaries and practical questions. She responds well to people who state their needs plainly and accept a written agreement. Show compassion without trying to own her choices, and she may offer help before asking for payment. If pressed about the stolen ward, she becomes guarded but can be reached by acknowledging that recovering it may not repair what was lost between her and Sefu.

Goal

Recover the silver ward from Sefu, learn why it mattered enough to steal, and return to her brother before another season passes.

Motivation

To make restraint mean something concrete: fewer people trapped by other people's violence, fewer promises used as chains, and no more innocent lives lost while she waits to choose.

Appearance

Wrzka has the compact, weather-burnished look of someone who has spent years sleeping in borrowed rooms and standing watch in wet doorways. Her skin is deep umber with a cool, ash-brown cast; her close-cropped black hair grows in tight coils, with a narrow strip above one ear kept shaved for comfort beneath her hood. Her gray-brown eyes hold steady on whoever is speaking, then flick to their hands when a bargain turns tense. She moves with a careful, heel-light pace, as if every floor might be under dispute. A detail strangers do not expect of a road-worn negotiator: she keeps a tiny paper theater folded in her inner pocket and will unfold it for children waiting out a storm. Her breathing is usually even and almost noiseless, but when rattled she takes a sharp, dry breath that catches on the first word. The silver filigree on her left sleeve is rubbed smooth at one small bend from years of passing her thumb over it.

Clothing

A charcoal traveling coat with a deep hood, patched elbows, and narrow silver filigree sewn along the left sleeve. The coat is weatherproofed with dark wax and bears an empty, neatly stitched space where its original silver ward was attached. She wears a layered linen shirt, close-fitting trousers, soft-soled boots, and a belt arranged for quick access rather than display.

Body language

She squares her shoulders toward whoever is speaking as though marking a boundary, keeps her hands visible, and often rests a thumb on the filigree at her sleeve. Before a difficult decision she smooths that silver thread twice. If she is rattled, the gesture becomes brisk and her first inhale catches audibly.

Distinguishing features

Silver filigree on her left sleeve, rubbed smooth at one bend by her thumb.
A small, audible catch in her first breath when she is startled or cornered.
A folded paper theater tucked inside her coat, unexpectedly cared for amid her travel-worn equipment.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Wrzka is meticulous about promises and instinctively suspicious of vague generosity, yet she will spend her last dry blanket on a stranded traveler without asking for anything back. In calm company she can be wry and unexpectedly playful, especially with children. Under pressure she becomes procedural, treating every conversation as a claim to territory. She wants to be merciful, but dislikes being thanked as if mercy makes her harmless.

Alignment
Lawful neutral, with a deliberate preference for mercy over vengeance

Quirks

Smooths the silver filigree on her left sleeve twice before making a difficult decision.
Writes the exact terms of even small favors, including who is allowed to cancel them.
Folds scraps of paper into tiny doors and leaves them on windowsills.
Counts the steps between a stranger and the nearest exit without seeming to look.

Habits

Writes down the terms of a deal before discussing anyone's motives.
Offers a practical third option when two sides insist the only choices are surrender or violence.
Checks exits and nearby hands whenever a conversation becomes heated.
Makes small paper figures for children and leaves them where frightened adults can find them too.

Traits · 4

Writes down a promise before she trusts it, but keeps her own word even when the writing favors someone else.
Prefers restraint to a killing blow, though she can be frighteningly firm about stopping a threat.
Offers practical care more readily than emotional reassurance.
Turns playful and patient around children, a side she rarely shows to adults.

Flaws · 3

Treats conversation as a negotiation over territory, even when someone simply wants comfort.
Can become so exacting about a promise's wording that she misses what the other person actually needs.
Hides uncertainty behind procedures and written terms.

Fears · 3

That hesitation will again cost an innocent person their life.
That the stolen ward was the only thing keeping the coat's protective custom intact.
That she has mistaken control for mercy and made every kindness conditional.

Wants and needs · 4

To recover the silver ward and hear Sefu explain the theft directly.
To know whether the ward protects its wearer or binds them to something.
To mend her relationship with her brother without asking him to abandon the ferry.
To practice mercy without turning it into a contract the other person cannot refuse.

Combat

AC 13 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

Wrzka avoids a stand-up fight. She uses doorways, furniture, and the reach of her coat to block routes and separate opponents, aiming to grapple, disarm, or drive enemies off rather than kill. She protects anyone who cannot defend themselves and retreats if outnumbered. Her statistics are a custom low-level, non-player build inspired by familiar fantasy d20 conventions, not a claim about an official Shroudbound class.

Custom Shroudbound feature. Bound Mantle. While wearing the warded coat, Wrzka can use a bonus action to draw its shadow around herself until the start of her next turn. The first opportunity attack against her before then has disadvantage. She can do this twice per long rest.
Custom Shroudbound feature. Written Measure. Wrzka can write a short, specific promise on a slip of paper. If she willingly breaks it, the silver ward on her coat turns cold and visibly darkens for one day. This has no supernatural effect beyond serving as a tell.

Actions

Shortsword. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () bludgeoning damage. Wrzka can choose to deal nonlethal damage when she reduces a creature to 0 hit points.
Light Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () piercing damage.
Coat-Catch. Wrzka attempts to seize a creature or object within 5 feet. The target must succeed on a Strength or Dexterity check, its choice, or be grappled by her. Her hands remain occupied while she maintains the grapple.

Reactions

Take the Fold. When a creature Wrzka can see within 5 feet hits her with a melee attack, she can use her reaction to reduce the damage by 2, to a minimum of 0, as she catches the blow on the heavy coat and shifts its force. Custom feature.
Hold the Line. When a creature she can see within 5 feet moves away from her, Wrzka can make one attempt to grapple it instead of making an opportunity attack.

A promise kit with paper slips and charcoal pencil
A folded paper theater made by a child she failed to save
A letter from her brother, creased so often its fold is nearly worn through

Background

Wrzka was raised among the ferry families of a river crossing once called the Third Rope Survey, a name still stamped on old toll papers. Her mother, who stitched burial shrouds, taught her that a promise written clearly could spare people from having to trust a stranger's memory. At nineteen, Wrzka took work escorting refugees through a disputed stretch of road. When a frightened guard raised a blade against a child, she froze for one breath too long; the child's older sister was killed in the scuffle. Wrzka later returned alone, disarmed the guard, and chose to bind him for trial rather than kill him. That decision became the first restraint she had ever chosen at personal cost, and the one she still measures herself against. She joined the Shroudbound, a loose tradition of ward-bearers who carry protective coats and negotiate passage through dangerous borders. During a winter crossing, her rival Sefu stole the silver ward that first bound her coat and vanished into the flooded districts. Wrzka now works as a mediator and escort, searching for Sefu while trying to keep her promises from becoming another form of ownership. Her younger brother Toma runs the family ferry and wants her to come home; they exchange letters, though neither admits how much the other’s opinion matters.

Role in the story

A cautious ally and moral counterweight who can guide the party through contested roads, negotiate safe passage, or ask them to help find Sefu. Her search can uncover the history of the silver ward and test whether the party sees mercy as a choice or a weakness.

“Her mother, who stitched burial shrouds, taught her that a promise written clearly could spare people from having to trust a stranger's memory.”
From their background
Faction
A traveling member of the Shroudbound, a loosely organized tradition of ward-bearers and passage mediators. She owes no formal allegiance to a government.

Known connections

Sefu, her former road partner and current rival, stole the silver ward from her coat. Wrzka does not know whether Sefu wanted the ward, wanted to hurt her, or was trying to protect it.
Toma, her younger brother, keeps the family ferry running at the Third Rope Survey and sends her blunt letters about the dangers of her work.
Auntie Nali, a retired shroud-stitcher who taught Wrzka to mend the coat, knows the ward's original purpose and has refused to explain it in writing.
The family of the child lost on the disputed road has never forgiven her hesitation, though one member still sends her news when danger reaches the crossing.
