At the table

Voice

His voice has a dry rasp from years around dust, oil smoke, and printing rooms, with a slight breath catch on words beginning with hard consonants. He puts stress on names and dates, as if setting them firmly into place. His laughter is a brief, surprised bark that often turns into a cough.

He speaks in precise, workmanlike sentences, shaped by years of listening for orders and later learning to ask careful questions. He often separates what is known from what is suspected. Under stress, his words come faster and fill with mechanical comparisons: a lie is a stripped gear, a plan is a joint under load.

Speech patterns

Asks precise follow-up questions and distinguishes what someone saw from what they heard.
Uses dry, practical humor when tension rises, especially about faulty machines.
When discussing the caravan, names concrete actions rather than relying on sweeping accusations.
Pauses before sharing a person's name and often asks whether they want it recorded.

How to play them

Offer practical help before asking for trust. Be explicit about what he plans to write down and who might see it. If the party wants to help, he asks them to protect witnesses, recover evidence, or verify a specific detail rather than make grand promises.

Goal

Finish a careful, consent-based account of the abuses in Raxtorim's slaver caravan and make it difficult for powerful people to erase.

Motivation

He wants testimony to survive without turning survivors into public property. His craft gives him a way to make broken things work; writing gives him a way to make lies harder to maintain.

Appearance

Ink is a blue-skinned Qumon with a narrow, alert face and silver horns that sweep back close to his skull, their ridged surfaces dulled by years of handling tools. His blue eyes have the clear, hard shine of glass beads. A purple tail curls behind him, usually threaded through a loop in his belt to keep it from catching on his work. He stands with his weight pitched forward over the balls of his feet, as if ready either to bolt or to lean over a page. He smells strongly of lampblack, hot oil, and bitter orange peel; he knows about the oil and insists the orange is for the books. His hands are usually stained with ink up to the knuckles, an unexpected mark on an artificer who keeps his tools meticulously clean.

Clothing

A patched charcoal work coat with leather elbow guards, a high collar that clears his horns, and deep pockets sorted by tool size. His cuffs are rolled to keep them out of grease. A weatherproof satchel holds loose pages wrapped in oilcloth.

Body language

He leans into conversations, but keeps his feet angled toward an exit. When waiting, he balances on the fronts of his feet and loops his tail through his belt. He holds still when listening to testimony, then resumes fidgeting with a tool only after asking permission to take notes.

Distinguishing features

Silver horns with close-set ridges polished smooth where his fingers worry them.
A purple tail usually looped through his belt, its tip twitching when he is calculating.
Ink and lampblack stains on his knuckles despite the neat organization of his tools.
The noticeable smell of hot oil and bitter orange peel.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Ink is careful with other people's pain but impatient with machinery that refuses to behave. He can be warm and gently funny with someone who is nervous, then sharply exacting when a powerful person tries to blur responsibility. He wants to believe that a truthful record can help, yet distrusts anyone who calls a story simple. When tired, he becomes terse and over-organized; when frightened, he starts asking practical questions as if planning a repair.

Alignment
Custom description: protective of the vulnerable, suspicious of authority, and willing to break laws he considers instruments of abuse.

Quirks

Taps a tool twice against his thumb before putting it away, even when it is already in the correct place.
Writes dates on scraps of paper, then folds each scrap into a tiny triangle and tucks it into his coat lining.
Turns cups so their handles face the nearest person, saying it prevents arguments with elbows.
Names each new spring he makes after a food he has not tasted yet.
When waiting for a machine to work, he whispers the next step to it as if giving a nervous apprentice instructions.

Habits

Tests a chair, door, or window with a quick glance before settling into a room.
When someone gives an account of harm, he asks what they want done with the information before writing anything down.
Repairs small objects while listening, but stops working when a speaker reaches a painful part of their story.
Keeps one eye on exits when uniforms or armed officials enter.

Traits · 4

Patient with a hesitant witness, impatient with a confident liar.
Protective of other people's choices but inclined to take dangerous decisions on their behalf.
Proud of his craft and embarrassed by how much he wants praise for the book.
Uses humor to make a room bearable, then dislikes himself if the joke lands at the wrong time.

Flaws · 3

He can become so focused on preserving evidence that he neglects his immediate safety.
He mistrusts official assurances even when cooperation might help.
His habit of checking every detail can make frightened people feel interrogated.

Fears · 3

That publishing a witness's account will expose them to retaliation.
Being confined again in a moving wagon where he cannot see or choose where it is going.
That his book will become another object people argue over while ignoring the people who suffered.

Wants and needs · 4

A secure place to keep witness statements beyond the reach of the caravan's agents.
Consent from a reluctant witness before using their account.
A replacement spring steel strip for his hand weapon.
Someone willing to challenge his plans when he starts treating his own safety as expendable.

Combat

HP 24 · Custom: moves about as quickly as an ordinary adult on foot. No fixed movement rate is assumed.

Ink avoids a fair fight. He uses cover, jams mechanisms, and throws smoke to create a route out for himself and others. He fires only when cornered, preferring the heavy bolt for its stopping force. He will risk himself to get a threatened witness clear, but does not mistake that impulse for a plan.

Custom Generic Fantasy rules. for uncertain actions, roll a d20 and add the relevant listed rating; 12 is a routine challenge, 15 difficult, and 18 severe. Ink's ratings and combat numbers are custom, not borrowed from a named game system.
Pocket Dynamo. Once per scene, Ink can spend an action to wind his palm-sized spring device. It gives one adjacent ally a brief burst of movement, enough to reach cover or cross a small gap.
Qumon nature. Ink has silver horns and a purple tail. These are descriptive traits, not an assumed source of extra rules.

Actions

Spring Puncher. Custom attack: roll d20 + Craft (4) against the target's defense. On a hit, deal 5 damage from the spring-driven puncher. At close range, Ink can instead fire a single heavy bolt for 7 damage; reloading takes an action.
Smoke Vial. Custom combat action: Ink throws a vial that bursts into choking gray powder in a small area. Creatures caught in it must succeed on a d20 + Nerve (3) roll against 14 or lose their next action coughing and blinking. Ink carries two vials.
Field Repair. Ink uses a hand tool and a moment's work to jam, loosen, or temporarily disable a simple mechanical device. For a complicated device, roll d20 + Craft (4) against 15 or 18, as appropriate.

Reactions

Quick Jam. Custom reaction, once per encounter: when a nearby ally is threatened by a mechanical hazard or a clear route is blocked by a simple mechanism, Ink can use his tools to jam it or open a way. Roll d20 + Craft (4) against 15; on a success, the immediate threat is halted or a narrow passage is made. This cannot stop a purely magical or overwhelming force.

Background

Ink was born far from Quadra Virex and has never had a reliable account of his early childhood. He remembers scraps: the rattle of a wagon latch, a handler counting people as if counting crates, and a woman beside him teaching him to make letters by tracing them in dust. Raxtorim's slaver caravan traded him between owners during a long passage through the interior. He survived by studying locks, wheel hubs, and the small failures that could slow a caravan without inviting immediate punishment. The formative break came when the woman who taught him letters was taken away after Ink tried to hide a note in a supply bundle. He learned that a written record could endanger its keeper, but also that silence left abusers free to tell the story themselves. He eventually escaped during a storm, using a bent axle pin and a torn harness to create a confusion of broken wagons. A family of itinerant repairers got him to Quadra Virex, where he took work mending presses and copying documents. He now writes a book about the caravan's abuses, recording testimony from other survivors with their consent. His current problem is that one account names a person who still has power in the city, and Ink cannot decide whether publishing it would expose the truth or endanger the witness.

Role in the story

A potential ally, investigator, and moral pressure point. Ink can connect the party to survivors and evidence of Raxtorim's caravan, while forcing them to consider the risks of exposing a truth that other people have entrusted to him.

“Raxtorim's slaver caravan traded him between owners during a long passage through the interior.”
From their background
Faction
No formal faction. He has working ties to repairers and copyists in Quadra Virex, and is openly opposed to the slave-trading network associated with Raxtorim.

Known connections

Mira, a traveling repairer who helped him reach Quadra Virex, still sends him odd parts and blunt advice. She thinks the book is worth writing but worries he is putting his safety last.
Olan, a former caravan captive now working in the city's kitchens, has shared memories for the book but asked Ink to withhold his name.
A city copyist named Edda lets Ink use a back room and press after hours. She is an ally, though she expects him to tell her before he takes risks that could bring officials to her door.
Raxtorim's caravan network remains an active threat. Ink has no proof that Raxtorim knows where he is, but he believes the caravan's agents still look for escaped captives.
