Osema
Osema
At the table
Voice
A dry, breath-first rasp shaped by years of calling across water and breathing cold mist. His consonants are clear and unhurried, but every answer begins with a faint intake through the nose, the sound of a man waiting for the current to finish speaking.
His words have the measured rhythm of someone calling instructions over wind and water. He leaves a small breath of silence before answering, as if checking what the river might add. His vocabulary is plain and workmanlike, rich in ferry terms; when nervous, he explains practical details nobody asked about.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Start with practical help: a safe crossing, a dry place to sit, or a warning about the current. He is open to honest questions but distrusts anyone who treats the river as property. If pressed about the flood, he changes the subject to ferry work; if shown genuine patience, he will eventually tell the truth about Dalo.
Goal
Find the bell buried beneath Split Ford before the river's warning becomes a flood, while preventing the ferry rights from being sold out from under the people who need them.
Motivation
To keep the ford and its people in balance, and to learn whether the river's voices are memories, spirits, or something older.
Appearance
Osema is a broad, weather-browned man with the dense, slightly swollen knuckles and rope-polished palms of someone who has hauled wet lines for years. River mist has left his skin rough and faintly pebbled across his nose and temples, while a persistent rim of pale salt clings to the seams of his coat. He moves with a boat's practiced counter-sway, knees flexing before the deck or bank shifts beneath him. His eyes are dark hazel, and his close-cropped hair is iron-gray at the temples. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny, immaculate collection of pressed flowers folded inside his work cap, each labeled in careful script.
Clothing
A waxed, moss-green river coat patched with sailcloth, a faded linen shirt, a broad belt carrying a coil of thin line, and high boots stained dark with mud. His work cap has a hidden fold for pressed flowers.
Body language
He plants his feet as if braced against a current, even on dry ground. Before disagreeing, he wets his thumb and touches it to the air to feel the wind. When someone speaks of the dead, his jaw shifts once as though testing a knot.

Background
Osema grew up on the banks of Split Ford, learning the ferry ropes from his mother, Sefu, and the river's moods from a grandfather who claimed every current carried a name. At seventeen, a spring flood tore the old ferry loose. Osema heard a voice in the churning water tell him to cut the towline; he hesitated, and his younger cousin Dalo was swept away with the boat. Osema survived by clinging to a root until dawn. The experience changed his listening from superstition into a solemn practice: he learned druidic ways from a wandering keeper of the ford and began treating the river as a neighbor with its own boundaries. He still ferries travelers and freight, quietly guiding stranded people and animals to safer crossings. His mother wants him to sell the ferry rights to a new road company, while his closest friend, the ferryman Temba, thinks Osema's spirit-talk is keeping the town poor. Lately, the river has been whispering the same warning: someone has buried a bell beneath the ford, and the water will soon demand it back.
Role in the story
A local guide, source of river lore, and uneasy ally whose warning about a buried bell can lead the party into a mystery beneath Split Ford. His divided loyalty makes him a natural mediator or a complication in disputes over the ford.
“At seventeen, a spring flood tore the old ferry loose.”
- Faction
- Independent keeper of Split Ford's public ferry. He has no formal faction, though the town's old ferry families expect him to defend their customary rights.
