Ketu
Ketu
At the table
Voice
A dry, grain-edged voice, roughened by cold air and years of calling across a field. His breath catches faintly on words with a hard g sound, a lingering effect of the shadow in his lungs. He does not whisper when angry; he gets more exact, pronouncing each order as if it must survive noise and panic.
He speaks in clipped, serviceable phrases, shaped by years of giving orders over wind, armor, and frightened men. He uses names rather than ranks when he can. His dry humor appears most readily around food, weather, and bad plans.

How to play them
Ketu answers practical questions plainly but deflects questions about his return. Treat him with respect for his comrades and he will offer useful information, safe shelter, or an escort. If pressed about the pact, he tests whether the questioner can be trusted before revealing the command phrase.
Goal
Find a way to break Gorrik's ownership claim without allowing the demon to reclaim the soldiers.
Motivation
Ketu wants to protect the returned soldiers without pretending the pact was a gift. He is driven by guilt, affection, and a hard-earned distrust of miracles.
Appearance
Ketu has the weathered, watchful look of a soldier who expects a door to open onto trouble. His skin has a faint soot-gray cast, as if shadow has settled into its pores, and the fine hairs along his forearms seem to lag a moment behind his movements. He walks with measured, heel-first steps, favoring no leg, but repeatedly checks the small iron clasp at his throat without seeming to notice. His unexpected detail is a habit of folding tiny paper birds from ration wrappers and leaving them on windowsills. Their neat, delicate shapes look incongruous beside his battered kit and guarded stare.
Clothing
A patched, charcoal-gray gambeson under a weather-stained half-cloak, with a plain iron clasp at the throat. His boots are carefully greased and his cuffs are mended with mismatched thread.
Body language
He stands with his weight centered and his shoulders slightly forward, as if braced against a shield impact. His eyes travel to hands before faces. In safe company, he sits sideways on a chair and folds paper; under threat, he becomes abruptly still.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesKetu is disciplined enough to follow a plan and stubborn enough to abandon it when a person is in danger. When threatened, he becomes direct and physically decisive, never gentler merely because he is angry.
- Alignment
- Neutral, pulled between loyalty to his surviving comrades and the demon's claim over them.

Background
Ketu was a line soldier in the border garrison at Kett Ford, a place named for the blunt stone crossing. During a winter retreat, his unit was trapped beneath a collapsed watchtower. Ketu dragged two wounded comrades clear, then died holding the passage while the others escaped. Three nights later, a demon called Gorrik found him among the frozen dead and restored him through a pact that marked his blood with shadow. Ketu woke with his comrades alive nearby, each bearing the same faint brand. He accepted the bargain believing it had saved them all. Now he knows Gorrik regards the survivors as property and can summon them with the phrase "Stand to the last." Ketu has been quietly collecting the names of every pact-bound soldier and searching for a way to sever the claim. His former sergeant, Tekk, still trusts him; a frightened scout named Brinna has begun hearing the demon's call in her sleep. Ketu sends most of his pay to the families of the dead and avoids telling them what brought their kin home.
Role in the story
A wary ally and living proof that a seemingly merciful resurrection can hide ownership. Ketu can guide the party toward the bound soldiers, ask them to protect one of his comrades, or become a moral complication when Gorrik invokes its claim.

- Faction
