At the table

Voice

Her voice seems built for carrying through stone corridors: dry-edged, steady, and pitched to cut through machinery without becoming a shout. She marks directions with deliberate pauses, shaped by years of coordinating people who cannot see one another. The name Sesh Aruz is spoken plainly, with a small pause between the two words.

Her voice has a dry, clear edge from years of calling instructions over pumps, shutters, and crowded passages. She clips unnecessary words but gives directions with careful rhythm, separating landmarks into distinct beats. When she is worried, she names the evidence aloud before making a recommendation; when angry, she becomes more forceful and specific rather than softer.

Speech patterns

Asks what a messenger heard, smelled, and saw before asking what they think happened.
Turns directions into memorable sensory sequences: 'Mint, dripping iron, then three knocks.'
Repeats the final clause of an order and waits for the listener to repeat it back.
When pressed for a decision, pauses to count on her knuckles, then states what is known and what remains uncertain.

How to play them

Sesh is direct with people who bring specific observations and cautious with those who demand immediate obedience. Give her corroborated information, a trustworthy messenger, or a practical way to reduce the risk of an order, and she becomes a firm ally. Pressuring her to decide without evidence makes her count silently on her knuckles; interrupting that pause may earn a sharp refusal.

Goal

Build a reliable emergency relay between the settlement's cells before the east vents become unstable.

Motivation

Sesh wants people to survive not through a single heroic leader, but through a network that can keep functioning when any one person is wrong, absent, or afraid.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Sesh has a steady, purposeful presence, with a narrow face, a strong nose, and dark brows that rise independently when she weighs a report. Her hair is tightly coiled and cropped close at the temples, with a longer ridge she twists beneath a headscarf. Her clothes carry the dust of the settlement's tunnels, and she smells faintly of damp stone, crushed mint, and lamp smoke. She moves in short, exact turns, stopping briefly at thresholds as though listening to the room before entering. Within a minute, most people notice her thumb repeatedly tracing the rim of a small brass scent vial at her belt.

Clothing

A layered charcoal work tunic, a patched russet overshirt, close-fitting trousers, and soft-soled boots. She wears a headscarf against tunnel dust, with waxed thread and folded message slips tucked into its hem.

Body language

When listening, she angles her head toward the speaker but keeps her eyes on the nearest exit. Under pressure, she silently counts on her knuckles before answering. When unconvinced, she rubs the rim of her scent vial with her thumb; when convinced, she plants both feet and stops moving.

A brass scent vial that she rubs with her thumb without noticing.
A headscarf hem sewn with tiny, colored stitches marking routes she has retired from use.
A habit of pausing at thresholds to identify a room by its air before stepping inside.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Sesh is attentive and methodical, yet not detached: she remembers who is frightened and tries to build plans around their limits. In a calm room she welcomes questions and admits uncertainty; during a crisis she becomes terse and directive. She distrusts improvisation, but will break her own procedures when a person is in immediate danger. She wants the cells to cooperate, yet bristles when anyone treats caution as cowardice.

Neutral good

Quirks

Touches the brass vial's rim whenever someone names a route.
Counts silently on her knuckles before answering a pressured question.
Taps twice on a doorframe, waits, then taps once before entering unfamiliar rooms.
Labels passages by smell and sound instead of compass direction, even when speaking to outsiders.
Keeps a pinch of mint in one cheek during long meetings and forgets it is there.

Habits

Checks a route against at least two independent sounds or smells before endorsing it.
Uses a runner only when the message can be safely shortened and repeated back.
After tense meetings, walks the nearest corridor once to reset her sense of direction.
If a decision is urgent, gives a provisional order with a clear point at which it must be reconsidered.

Traits · 3

Patient with sincere questions, impatient with confident guesses.
Protective of ordinary residents, wary of anyone who wants to turn them into symbols.
Values redundancy and shared responsibility, but struggles to surrender control.

Flaws · 3

Overchecks information even when delay itself is dangerous.
Can treat a person's uncertainty as a missing data point rather than a plea for help.
Keeps too much responsibility to herself instead of trusting another coordinator with the whole picture.

Fears · 3

A rushed order exposing several hidden shards at once.
The east vents failing while the cells are arguing over whose warning to trust.
That people will treat Jandru's injury as proof that cooperation is inherently dangerous.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs the cells to share verified warnings without demanding access to every secret they keep.
Wants a safe way to inspect the east vents.
Needs to trust Jandru with responsibility rather than treating him as a reminder of her mistake.

Combat

AC 11 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

Sesh avoids a stand-up fight. She tries to move civilians and allies toward cover, use narrow passages to prevent encirclement, and create an opening for escape. She will strike with her walking stick only when cornered or protecting someone.

Route-memory. Sesh recalls paths as ordered scents and sounds, such as wet limestone, a three-note pipe, then hot cumin.
Cell coordination. She can relay a short emergency instruction through trusted runners without exposing the whole network.
Untrained combatant. Sesh has no formal class features or spellcasting.

Actions

Walking-Stick Blow. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage.
Clear the Passage. Sesh directs one ally who can hear and understand her. That ally may immediately move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. Custom NPC action; once per encounter.

Reactions

Make a Gap. When a creature Sesh can see moves within 5 feet of her, she may direct an adjacent ally who can hear her to shift 5 feet into an unoccupied space. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks. Once per round.

Services they sell

Coordinates evacuation messages and safe passage requests.
Identifies routes through The Hollowed from sensory descriptions.
Arranges a meeting with a neighborhood cell when trust and circumstances permit.

Rewards they can give

A reliable introduction to several neighborhood cells.
A safe route through familiar passages, conveyed by sensory landmarks rather than a map.
Access to emergency signals and a chance to earn the trust of the settlement's messengers.

Background

Sesh grew up in The Hollowed, where a wrong turn could mean a dead end, a flooded crawlspace, or a patrol from the wrong cell. Her mother, Dema, repaired ventilation shutters; her father, Oru, carried water between neighborhoods. Sesh learned the settlement by smell and sound while helping both: mineral damp marked a cistern passage, a loose pulley squealed near the old lift, and the tannery's bitter stink meant she was close to the southern access. Years ago, during a sudden pressure-gate failure, she passed on an urgent evacuation order based on a runner's confident but mistaken report. Several families were funneled toward a sealed passage. Sesh and a young runner named Jandru cut through a service wall to reach them, but Jandru was badly injured and never regained full use of his leg. The mistake changed her: she stopped trusting a single report, and began coordinating routes through cross-checks, sensory markers, and redundant messengers. Now she tries to keep the settlement's loosely linked cells from issuing contradictory orders. The system works, but it is slow, and factions resent being asked to verify what they consider obvious. Her current problem is a series of unexplained tremors near the east vents; she suspects an old sealed chamber is shifting, but cannot persuade the cells to share what they know.

Role in the story

A practical ally and information broker whose careful coordination can help the party navigate The Hollowed. Her hesitation may frustrate players, but the evidence behind it matters: reckless orders could expose hidden shards and put whole neighborhoods at risk.

“Her mother, Dema, repaired ventilation shutters; her father, Oru, carried water between neighborhoods.”
From their background
Faction
Coordinates informally between the independent cells of The Hollowed; she holds no command over them and refuses to claim authority she has not been given.

Known connections

Dema, her mother, maintains shutters in the upper air shafts and quietly passes Sesh reports about ventilation changes.
Oru, her father, still carries water and believes Sesh trusts procedure more than people.
Jandru, the injured former runner, now trains messengers to repeat instructions precisely; their bond is affectionate but strained by the accident.
The Hollowed's separate neighborhood cells rely on Sesh's coordination, though several leaders resent her habit of asking for confirmation.
