Argentumala
Argentumala
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice shaped by years of speaking across wet docks and crowded hearing rooms. Its low rasp comes from river mist and long workdays, not theatrical gravity; her vowels remain measured even when she is angry, while consonants sharpen when she wants a listener to notice a contradiction.
Her words have the clipped clarity of someone accustomed to recording testimony over rain and ferry noise. She favors concrete questions, lets silence do some of the work, and rarely uses a grand title when a person's name will do.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Make space for others to speak, offer a small useful kindness, and let the players choose whether to trust her. She will disclose evidence in stages, but answers direct questions honestly unless doing so would endanger a witness.
Goal
Expose the leak inside the Order without destroying the network of witnesses who depend on it.
Motivation
To keep testimony alive long enough for the truth to matter, while preventing the Order from becoming another instrument of quiet coercion.
Appearance
Argentumala has weather-polished brown skin, fine creases at the corners of her eyes, and a calm face that seems to give every speaker time to finish. Her silver-threaded hair is braided close to the scalp and pinned beneath a plain hood. She moves with careful economy, placing each foot as if testing ice. A faint scent of beeswax, cold rain, and the medicinal juniper oil she rubs into her hands follows her; she knows about the oil, but not how strongly it clings to her wool.
Clothing
A slate-blue wool coat patched at the elbows, a rain-dark hood, soft leather boots, and a narrow silver pin worn inside the lapel rather than displayed. Her cuffs carry tiny loops for paper slips and sealing thread.
Body language
She inclines her head as if weighing the exact shape of a statement, then rests both hands on her walking stick. When uneasy, she turns a smooth silver disk between her thumb and forefinger. She rarely blocks a doorway, preferring to stand where people can choose to approach or leave.

Background
Before she became the Silver Witness, Argentumala kept testimony for the ferry courts at a river crossing. During a flood, a magistrate ordered her to seal the doors of a crowded storehouse to protect a cache of grain. She disobeyed, opened a side passage, and saved most of the trapped families, but the delay cost the town its grain stores and left her younger brother among the dead. The choice taught her that laws can be cruel and that good intentions can still leave bodies behind. Years later, the secret society called the Order of the Silver Dragon recruited her for her memory, patience, and refusal to confuse authority with truth. Now she quietly gathers evidence that the Order's respected patron, Master Vasko, has been selling advance warning of its investigations. Argentumala has not accused him: she is building a circumstance in which he must reveal himself before witnesses. She stays in touch with her niece, Enni, a ferry pilot who thinks Argentumala's caution has become a way to avoid choosing sides.
Role in the story
A cautious ally and source of testimony who can help the party uncover conspiracies. Her methods may seem manipulative, and the players can challenge her to be more direct.
