Lalevan
Lalevan
At the table
Voice
A dry, work-worn voice with a faint rasp at the end of each phrase. It has the breath discipline of someone accustomed to timing effort at the anvil. Under stress the rasp becomes a double-cough, then a brief held silence before he speaks again.
His voice has a dry, slightly rough edge from years of smoke and furnace air. He clips work instructions into compact phrases, but takes longer, more winding breaths when recalling the quarry collapse. When rattled, a dry double-cough interrupts him; he will often cover it by asking a practical question.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with a practical question about what the visitor needs and how they intend to use it. Offer a cheaper repair before recommending a new purchase. He warms to people who respect his workers and can explain their plans plainly; threats make him retreat behind the counter and call for help.
Goal
Finish and test the 6th Survey's spearheads before the caravan departs, then find a reliable source of sound iron.
Motivation
To keep his shop and apprentice safe without allowing fear of another loss to make every decision for him.
Appearance
Lalevan is broad through the shoulders, with a soot-dark beard clipped square at the jaw and a thick mustache that catches tiny flecks of charcoal. His skin has the dry, warm sheen of someone who works close to a furnace; pale ash settles in the creases around his eyes and along his hairline. He walks with a measured, slightly forward pitch, placing each foot as if testing a floor for stability. Even at rest, his breath comes in short, controlled pulls through his nose, followed by a faint rasp in his throat. When rattled, that rasp turns into a dry double-cough and his chest goes still for a beat. The unexpected thing about him: he keeps a tiny, immaculate collection of pressed wildflowers tucked inside his work apron, each labeled in careful script.
Clothing
A smoke-brown leather apron over a faded blue work shirt, wool trousers, and high boots patched at the instep. He wears a thick neck cloth against sparks and keeps a narrow cloth pouch, carefully tied shut, inside his apron.
Body language
He tends to lean toward a speaker as though listening for a fault in a piece of metal. His hands are usually still unless there is a tool to turn or a surface to wipe. Anger shows first in the set of his jaw; fear shows in that sudden held breath and dry double-cough.

HP 100 · Not defined by UE5. For a custom project, use the project's standard human movement settings. He is a shopkeeper, not a trained soldier. If threatened, he puts the counter or an anvil between himself and the attacker, calls for help, and uses his hammer only to make room to escape. His attacks use custom encounter values that must be adapted to the project's combat rules.

Background
Lalevan learned his trade from his mother, who ran a roadside repair forge outside the old quarry. At nineteen, he took work repairing tools for the 6th Survey's stone crews. During a winter collapse, a trapped crew begged him to open a sealed service gate. His foreman ordered him to wait for the supports; Lalevan disobeyed, opened the gate, and saved three workers, but the rushed rescue brought down a second section and killed his younger brother, Daro. Since then he has trusted practical judgment more than orders, while privately fearing that every quick decision hides another cost. He bought his present shop from an elderly smith whose name is now forgotten, and its old sign still bears the worn, unreadable mark that locals call 'Vask.' He employs Kesh, a sharp-eyed apprentice who wants to join the caravan guard, and owes a delivery of repaired spearheads to Togr, the quartermaster of the 6th Survey. His sister, Gita, lives upriver and sends him pressed flowers from the wetlands. The shop is behind on its rent, the quartermaster is impatient, and a batch of iron he bought cheaply has begun to crack under stress.
