Gektar
Gektar
At the table
Voice
His voice has a dry, papery rasp from years of grinding herbs and breathing their dust, with a clear, forward placement that carries over a crowded shop. He clips the ends of instructions, but lets the names of plants stretch into careful, deliberate syllables. When angered, he gets faster and more exact, like a knife working through tough stems.
He speaks in clipped, grounded phrases, shaped by years of giving instructions over a busy counter and learning to conserve breath during martial drills. His vowels carry a faint Persian-colored lilt from his mother's family, while his consonants land with a dry, percussive snap. When explaining a treatment, he becomes precise and patient; when lying, he overexplains the practical details.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Gektar offers modest practical help first: a cup of bitter tea, a clean bandage, or a place to sit. He respects people who are direct about what they need, but tests anyone who asks for access to his sister or shop records. Kindness earns candor; threats earn a fast assessment of exits and vulnerabilities. He will discuss his family's practice only if he believes the listener can bear an honest answer.
Goal
Find a treatment for the spreading fever before the sick are reduced to a choice between suffering and his and Yamyam's secret rite.
Motivation
To make sure nobody is abandoned to needless suffering, while proving to himself that his choices are mercy rather than fear dressed up as certainty.
Appearance
Gektar is a small, sharp-featured fairy with translucent wings like pressed leaves, their veins dark as old tea. He moves in quick, exact bursts, then becomes unnervingly still, as if listening through the floorboards. A dented brass mortar hangs from his belt; its rim is polished bright where his thumb rubs it, while the bowl is blackened with years of grinding. Unexpectedly for a streetwise herbalist and fighter, he keeps a tiny paper theater folded inside his coat and makes new shadow puppets whenever business is slow.
Clothing
A faded plum-colored waistcoat over a linen shirt, patched trousers, and a leather apron stiff with dried sap. Small glass vials are secured in loops along his belt, and a weatherproof scarf is knotted around his wrist rather than his neck.
Body language
He favors his left side when standing, keeping his staff angled across his body as if it were a shop counter. His wings twitch in short, dry shivers when he is calculating a risk. In a fight he never wastes a step; outside one, he taps his thumb against the polished spot on his mortar.

Personality
13 traits and drivesGektar is brisk and unsentimental in the shop, but privately sentimental about small objects and remembered voices. He distrusts grand promises yet will risk himself for a stranger in immediate danger. With patients he is patient and precise; with people who exploit them he becomes cutting and frighteningly decisive. He wants Yamyam's approval, but resents being treated as the younger sibling who must be corrected.

Background
Gektar and his older sister Yamyam inherited a cramped herb shop from their mother, who taught them that a remedy is a promise, not a product. As children, they lived through the winter fever that swept the reed-clustered settlement of Reedcut. Their mother died after refusing a wealthy visitor's bribe for the last dose of a rare tincture, and Gektar blamed himself for being too young to understand how sick she was. Years later, he trained at the Wayfarer's Rest monastery, where he learned to turn breath, balance, and restraint into weapons. He left after the masters condemned his belief that some suffering cannot be eased by medicine. Now he and Yamyam run the shop called Bittersteam, named for the medicinal smell that curls from its chimney. When a patient is beyond help, they sometimes eat them, claiming an old fairy rite can return a life to the soil and keep the body from being wasted. Gektar calls it mercy, but he and his sister disagree about consent, secrecy, and where mercy ends. Their former teacher, Orhan, has tracked him down with an offer of help and a demand that he stop. Meanwhile, a new fever is appearing in the neighboring farms, and the shop's dwindling stock cannot treat it.
Role in the story
A memorable healer whose care is genuine and whose methods create a moral crisis. He can become a wary ally against the spreading fever, a source of clues about its cause, or an antagonist if the party discovers that he overrides the wishes of the dying.
