At the table
Voice
A dry, low-volume rasp with a faint breathy catch, as if she has just come in from cold air. The initial pause before she speaks is often more noticeable than her words. When calling across a market, her voice cuts through with the sharp projection of someone accustomed to shouting over carts and rain; when treating a patient, it becomes steady and plain rather than soothing.
Her words arrive in clipped, workmanlike phrases, shaped by years of giving instructions over market noise and treating people who are frightened or feverish. She rolls some consonants and stresses the wrong syllable when tired, a trace of her family's old household dialect. She tends to pause for one measured breath before answering anything personal.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Yamyam is most approachable when asked for practical help: identifying a poison, treating a wound, or finding a safe route through Khuld. She offers a useful service before asking for anything personal. Treat Loom kindly and she will become noticeably less guarded. Threaten him or corner her about her appetite and she stops bargaining, takes to the air, and looks for a way out.
Goal
Find who is leaving the marked carcasses, learn what they know about the cistern, and keep Loom from being drawn into the answer.
Motivation
Yamyam wants to believe that what she did to survive does not define what she is. She keeps helping the sick because she needs evidence, even private evidence, that she can preserve life as well as take it.
Appearance
Yamyam is a handspan-and-a-half taller than a human's forearm, with the compact, spring-loaded posture of something accustomed to launching from gutters. Her moss-brown skin has a dry, velvet texture, and fine pale speckles run over her shoulders like flour dust. Her wings resemble two overlapping sycamore leaves, translucent at the edges and darkly veined toward the body; they shiver before she moves, like a held breath. She walks with quick, heel-first steps, then goes abruptly still, head tilted as if listening through the soles of her feet. Within a minute of meeting her, most people notice the smell: bitter wormwood, wet soil, and a faint, unmistakable trace of raw meat. Yamyam knows about the herbs. She pretends not to notice the rest. Unexpectedly, she keeps a tiny, meticulously tended rooftop garden of edible flowers for the city's pigeons.
Clothing
A patched, sleeveless apothecary's coat cut open behind the shoulders, with small leather loops holding dried plants, bone needles, and tightly stoppered vials. She wears a belt made from braided reed and carries a hooded scarf for hiding her wings in human crowds.
Body language
Her wings flutter in tiny, involuntary pulses when she is hungry or excited. She angles her body toward exits while maintaining eye contact, and taps one thumbnail against her front teeth when weighing a lie. When genuinely ashamed, she folds her wings tight enough to make their veins stand out.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesIktet is practical to the point of seeming callous, yet she is tender with the injured in ways she cannot explain without embarrassment. She jokes when relaxed, but becomes direct and hard to distract when she feels threatened. In company she can be almost companionable; alone with a fresh scent of blood, her attention narrows into a frightening, patient stillness.
- Alignment
- Neutral evil. She is capable of affection and keeps promises to those she considers hers, but regards strangers as potential food when hunger overwhelms her restraint.

Combat
AC 15 · HP 44 · 30 ft., fly 30 ft.Yamyam tries to begin combat from cover or above, marks the most isolated enemy, then uses her flight to keep out of reach while firing twice each turn. She favors ensnaring strike to pin a dangerous pursuer and lesser restoration to keep an ally or herself in the fight. If cornered, she attacks with her knife and seeks a gap to escape rather than standing her ground. She avoids eating anyone during a fight; the impulse comes after, when danger has passed.

Background
Yamyam and her brother Loom grew up among the cramped roof gardens and flood channels of Khuld, where hungry winters made every living thing seem like a resource. Their mother gathered medicinal moss and taught Yamyam to distinguish healing plants from poisonous ones; their father vanished during a food riot, leaving no body and no explanation. The formative change came when Yamyam was still young: trapped in a collapsed cistern during a winter famine, she survived by eating a dying creature that had been brought down there by the flood. The experience did not make her proud, but it severed the boundary she had been taught to trust between hunger and horror. She later apprenticed herself to a human apothecary, learning to treat fever, venom, and infected wounds while hiding what she did to feed herself. Loom knows enough to fear her appetite, but he still shares their rooms and tries to keep her from hunting in the crowded districts. Recently, someone has been leaving fresh animal carcasses on her windowsill, each one neatly opened and marked with the old survey number 17. Yamyam suspects a witness from the cistern years has found her.
Role in the story
A morally dangerous but useful herbalist whose knowledge can save the party, while her predatory hunger and buried past put her at odds with anyone who assumes that a gentle healer must be harmless.
“The experience did not make her proud, but it severed the boundary she had been taught to trust between hunger and horror.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. She trades remedies through the market stalls around the old survey marker called 17, a place named for the long-vanished surveyor whose marker still divides the district.
