At the table

“not impossible yet.”
From how they speak

Voice

A brisk, lightly rasped voice shaped by forge smoke and the habit of calling across a noisy workshop. She clips technical terms precisely, then lets everyday sentences spill into excited afterthoughts. Her laugh is a bright, brief bark, and she counts on her fingers when explaining a risk.

Her voice is brisk and slightly rasped at the edges from years of forge smoke and calling over workshop noise. She clips technical words cleanly, then lets the ends of casual sentences tumble into quick, excited afterthoughts. When explaining a risk, she instinctively counts steps on her fingers. Her laughter is a short, bright bark that often surprises people who expect a more solemn famous inventor.

Speech patterns

Explains danger through practical comparisons: 'That valve is a teapot with a grudge.'
Uses exact measurements when nervous, even when nobody needs them.
Asks questions in quick pairs, then pauses for the answer she actually wants.
Calls a promising idea 'not impossible yet.'

How to play them

Hesper responds best to specific problems, honest constraints, and people who admit what they do not know. Offer a practical challenge and she will become animated; try to flatter her into giving away a design and she will ask pointed questions. She warms to adventurers who protect bystanders or credit collaborators. If trust is earned, she will share useful prototypes, but she insists on discussing failure cases before handing anything over.

Goal

Complete and safely demonstrate a portable floodgate engine that can protect Brindlewake without putting the town in the hands of the quarry concern.

Motivation

To prove that invention can be both daring and careful, and to repair the trust she damaged with her brother.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Hesper is wiry even by gnome standards, all quick elbows and narrow shoulders, with the compact, spring-loaded posture of someone used to leaning over a workbench. Soot has worked into the hems of her cuffs and the creases beside her nostrils. Her white hair erupts in a frizz around brass goggles perched above her brow, each lens clouded differently by years of sparks and polishing. She checks the goggles' hinge with her thumb whenever she thinks, often without noticing. Her broad front teeth show when she grins, and she chews the inside of one cheek while calculating. She moves in abrupt starts, then holds perfectly still to listen to a mechanism. The first impression is of a tool chest that learned to walk and is already deciding how to improve the room.

Clothing

A soot-marked work shirt beneath a dark, close-fitted leather vest sewn with tiny pockets. The pockets clink with brass clockwork, screws, and glass vials. She wears reinforced trousers, scuffed boots, a tool belt, and goggles with one smoked lens and one clear lens. A padded, riveted coat serves as both workshop protection and infused armor.

Body language

Her hands are almost always occupied: one thumb worries the goggles' hinge while the other fingers roll a rivet, pencil, or tiny gear. She leans toward people when curious and away when she suspects flattery. When angry, her jaw works visibly and she squares her shoulders instead of retreating. She laughs with her whole face, showing those broad front teeth, then looks mildly embarrassed by the noise.

Distinguishing features

Brass goggles with two differently clouded lenses, constantly checked at the hinge.
Broad front teeth and a cheek-chewing habit that becomes obvious when she calculates.
A vest whose many tiny pockets give a faint clockwork clink when she moves.
A pocket-sized brass beetle that patrols her workbench and steals loose screws.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Hesper is exuberant about a difficult mechanism but guarded about the people behind it. She can be generous with tools and explanations, yet prickly when praised as a genius instead of credited as a worker. In a workshop she is fast-talking and playful; around injured people she becomes careful, formal, and almost painfully attentive. She wants to trust others, but her first response to uncertainty is to check the hinges herself.

Neutral Good

Quirks

Checks the hinge of her goggles with her thumb whenever she is thinking.
Names each test run by the tool used to stop it if it fails: 'Dowel Three' or 'Bucket Two.'
Leaves tiny paper flags on anything she has not personally inspected.
Chews the inside of one cheek while doing arithmetic, then taps the answer twice on the nearest surface.
Keeps a strict bedtime for her Steel Defender, even though it does not sleep.

Habits

Tests a new mechanism with a wooden dowel before putting a finger near it.
When tired, talks to her Steel Defender as if it were a stubborn apprentice.
In a crisis, stops fidgeting and becomes startlingly methodical.
When praised, changes the subject to the materials or the person who helped.
If someone is frightened, she gives them a small task so they can feel useful.

Traits · 3

She makes room at her workbench for anyone willing to learn, but bristles if they touch a tool without asking.
She jokes freely when a plan is going well, then turns blunt and exact when something begins to fail.
She is proud of her work and uncomfortable with being treated as a celebrity.

Flaws · 3

She tests herself and her inventions too relentlessly, delaying useful work for one more check.
She responds to emotional conflict by offering a practical fix instead of listening.
When someone takes credit for another person's work, she can become so combative that she jeopardizes negotiations.

Fears · 3

That a clever invention of hers will injure someone who trusted her.
That her mentor's accusation will prevent her work from being judged on its merits.
That Oren's forgiveness is only a courtesy and not something she has earned.

Wants and needs · 4

A safe, independent test site for her floodgate engine.
A frank conversation with Oren that is not disguised as a repair job.
Proof of where her regulator design came from.
Reliable allies who will challenge her assumptions without taking over her work.

Combat

AC 18 · HP 52 · 25 ft.

Hesper prefers cover, clever angles, and protecting whoever is most vulnerable. She uses Faerie Fire or Web to disrupt a cluster, then attacks with her repeating crossbow while directing her Steel Defender to harry a dangerous foe or guard an ally. She uses Arcane Jolt to heal a companion when the fight turns, and to add force damage when a decisive hit can end the threat. If outnumbered, she withdraws behind the defender rather than risking a reckless close-quarters exchange.

Actions

Repeating Hand Crossbow. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: magical piercing damage. Hesper uses Intelligence for the attack and damage rolls.
Repeating Crossbow Shot. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: magical piercing damage. The weapon ignores the loading property and magically produces its own ammunition.
Spellcasting. Hesper casts a prepared artificer spell, using Intelligence as her spellcasting ability. She has 10 spell slots: four 1st-level and three 2nd-level. She regains expended slots after a long rest.
Arcane Jolt. Hesper or a creature within 30 feet that she can see regains hit points. Once used, this feature cannot be used again until she finishes a long rest.
Command Steel Defender. Hesper can use a bonus action to command her Steel Defender to take an action other than Dodge. If she is incapacitated, the defender acts on its own.

Reactions

Deflect Attack. When a creature Hesper can see attacks a target other than her within 5 feet of her Steel Defender, the defender imposes disadvantage on the attack roll, provided it can see the attacker. This is the Steel Defender's official Deflect Attack reaction.
Mind Sharpener. When Hesper or a creature she can see within 30 feet fails a saving throw, she can use her reaction to expend a charge from her Mind Sharpener infusion, turning the failure into a success. It has 4 charges and regains expended charges daily at dawn.

Background

Hesper grew up in a family of millwrights in the cliffside town of Brindlewake, where every household depended on waterwheels cut into the rock. At fourteen, she built a pressure regulator from a cracked kettle and salvaged clock parts; it saved a whole row of mills from a flood, but its improvised release valve failed and injured her older brother, Oren. The accident changed her from a fearless tinkerer into a maker who tests every failure twice and trusts nobody's assurances about safety. She apprenticed under the celebrated artificer Master Varo, whose workshop taught her precision and whose habit of taking credit taught her suspicion. Hesper eventually left with a battered notebook of her own designs and a small mechanical defender she built from discarded parts. Now she is known for inventions that solve public problems, but her latest project, a portable floodgate engine, is wanted by both the town council and a private quarry concern. Oren, now a bridge inspector, still loves her and still refuses to let her near his worksite without an independent safety test.

Role in the story

A brilliant but cautious ally whose floodgate invention can save a settlement, expose a powerful claimant, or become a dangerous prize. Her history gives the party a personal stake in the ethics of invention, credit, and responsibility.
