Voice

A dry, slightly rasped speaking voice, with a breath drawn through the teeth before difficult answers. It carries the clipped cadence of a man used to making himself heard over rigging and surf, but he does not project unless a room demands it.

He speaks in measured, practical phrases shaped by bargaining, shipboard noise, and years of listening before answering. His vocabulary is precise about cargo, distance, and timing, but carefully vague about motive. When he is nervous, his consonants catch slightly against his teeth and his sentences become more exact rather than louder.

Speech patterns

Uses precise terms for routes, timing, cargo, and obligations, but avoids naming the person who gave an order unless pressed.
Frames warnings as practical observations: what will arrive, when, and what it is likely to cost.
Asks questions that sound like small talk but test what the other person knows.
When speaking about Tor, distinguishes between what he was told and what he personally believes.

How to play them

Begin with useful, verifiable information and let others decide whether to trust him. He responds to directness more than threats, but will not casually reveal Tor's private instructions. Offer him a choice with real consequences, rather than demanding an immediate confession, and watch for the detail he deliberately leaves unsaid.

Goal

Help close the remaining Demon Gates without becoming Tor's instrument in another catastrophe, and learn whether he can watch without reporting everything he sees.

Motivation

To remain useful enough to survive, while slowly finding out whether usefulness can be chosen rather than commanded.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

An angular, weathered man who dresses to disappear into a crowd rather than impress it. His long dark hair hangs over his face though loose strands around his temples. A pale, unmistakable scar runs across his cheek. His gaze moves in quick, precise hops, taking in doors, hands, and reflections before settling on a speaker. He moves with a merchant's practiced economy, turning his whole body to keep a room in view.

Clothing

Well-cut but practical travel clothes in muted sea and earth tones: a weatherproof coat, layered waistcoat, close-fitting boots, high collars, and a soft scarf that can hide his face in spray or dust. Nothing bears a conspicuous insignia. The garments are maintained carefully, with discreet repairs at the cuffs and seams.

Body language

He holds his shoulders in a traveler's slight forward lean, as if ready to move before a conversation turns. His eyes flick to hands and exits; when he is withholding something, he rolls the old ring against his thumb. In a rare moment of honest uncertainty, he stops moving altogether.

Distinguishing features

A long scar crosses his cheek, a visible reminder of a life spent near violence rather than above it.
His old signet ring is worn smooth on one edge where his thumb worries it during pauses.
He carries a tightly wrapped bundle of dried wildflowers inside his coat, an unexpectedly tender keepsake he never explains.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Artigrom is observant and professionally courteous, yet distrustful of any courtesy that asks nothing in return. He can be patient and tactful when gathering information, but becomes blunt when people waste time around a clear danger. He prizes control because it kept him alive, while quietly yearning to act without calculating what his master will hear. In a calm room he lets others talk; under pressure he takes charge of practical details, then resents himself for sounding like Tor.

Alignment
Lawful neutral, though his obedience is beginning to fray

Quirks

Before answering a difficult question, he takes a small breath through his teeth, as if checking whether the truth has sharp edges.
Turns his ring one quarter-turn whenever someone mentions an arrival time.
Sorts loose gemstones by the sound they make when tapped together, not by color or value.
When left alone in a room, silently tests whether each door latch can be opened from either side.

Habits

Chooses a seat with a view of the entrance, then checks the nearest reflective surface for a second approach.
When questioned, answers the literal question first and watches to see whether the asker notices what he left out.
Counts time by expected arrivals and becomes visibly impatient when a schedule slips, even if he claims not to care.
Offers practical help before sympathy, then remembers the personal detail behind a request long after the crisis passes.

Traits · 4

Studies people carefully but dislikes being studied in return.
Can show genuine kindness in small, deniable gestures, then deflect thanks with a businesslike remark.
Values clear agreements and follows them even when their spirit troubles him.
Is calm in immediate danger but unsettled by unstructured freedom.

Flaws · 3

Treats trust as a transaction and often withholds the very detail that would let others judge a risk.
His dependence on Tor's protection makes genuine defiance dangerous.
Can remain composed through a crisis so convincingly that allies mistake fear or guilt for indifference.

Fears · 3

That Tor's protection is also a leash whose full purpose has not yet been revealed.
That his small acts of withholding will cause others to pay for his hesitation.
Being used again as a ritual component, rather than as a person.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs the Avengers to believe that his warnings are useful even when his loyalties remain divided.
Wants to understand what Tor's ring and bond are ultimately meant to accomplish.
Needs a way to act independently without exposing his allies to retaliation.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

Artigrom avoids a fair fight. He uses cover, keeps an escape route open, and tries to bargain or surrender when outmatched. If forced to defend himself, he fires from behind allies or obstacles, uses his dagger only to break away, and relies on Tor's ring against hostile magic. He has no spellcasting of his own.

Custom feature. Tor's ring grants Artigrom advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects. It does not make him immune to magic.

Reactions

Ring of Warded Passage. When targeted by a spell or other magical effect that allows a saving throw, Mishar can invoke the ring's protection and gain advantage on that saving throw. This is a custom item feature, not spell immunity.
Slip the Press. When a creature Mishar can see moves within 5 feet of him, he can use his reaction to move up to 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks from that creature. This is a custom evasive maneuver, not a class feature.

Background

Artigrom Hookabee was a traveling gem merchant long before he became Tor Edvard's agent. During an early visit to Tor's domain, a bargain was struck that Artigrom has never described plainly. He emerged with a patron, protection, and a channel through which Tor could speak directly into his thoughts. Since then he has served as merchant, messenger, spy, and facilitator, using respectable trade as cover for work that included occult deliveries and a ritual at Targil's Run connected to the Sea Princes and the creation of a Yuan-ti Anathema. He has also carried a package intended to keep dwarves from joining the war. The ritual changed his sense of what a useful errand could cost: he learned that a quiet, ordinary man could help set horrors in motion without ever raising a weapon. Later, Yuan-ti captors carried him toward the Black Gate, where he warned the Avengers that Ietra meant to sacrifice him and summon a Marilith. After his ship was destroyed, he surrendered to the Avengers and accepted Tor's order to help them oppose the lich's gates. He has since shared Tor's information about Emberwood Boughs and fire elementals. He remains tied to Tor, but has begun to test the smallest possible acts of independence: a delayed report, an omitted detail, a moment of watching without transmitting what he sees.

Role in the story

A morally compromised informant and reluctant ally whose bond to Tor Edvard makes every act of cooperation suspect. His slow, quiet shift from obedient watcher to self-directed sentinel can offer the party a long-running story about complicity, trust, and the difference between observation and control.
