Voice

A dry, breath-caught rasp shaped by years of dust scarves and long stretches spent listening before speaking. He often takes a small nose-breath before beginning. He gives directions in clipped units, but when describing a track he can speak steadily for minutes without losing a detail.

His words begin with a small nose-breath and a brief pause, as though he is checking which way the air moves before speaking. A lifetime of scarf-wrapped travel has given his voice a grainy, slightly breath-caught texture. He clips route instructions into compact phrases, but his memories arrive in long, precise descriptions of wind and ground. The name Vrzqen is dense with consonants, spoken with a restrained click at the center.

Speech patterns

Uses short, practical phrases when planning movement, often naming wind, ground, and distance before people.
Asks questions that sound casual but test whether someone is frightened, lying, or being followed.
When recalling the long pursuit, gives exact details of weather and terrain but skips over his own feelings.
With children, offers choices instead of orders whenever time allows.

How to play them

Approach him with a clear purpose and he will listen before judging. He tests claims against small details, especially routes, timing, and who knows about a plan. Showing concern for the people being escorted earns more trust than flattery. He is more receptive to disagreement when it comes with a practical alternative.

Goal

Get Yara and the other Wildborn in his care beyond the current search line, then establish a safer route that does not depend on him alone.

Motivation

To turn the tracking skill that once made him an employer's weapon into a way for hunted people to choose where their trail leads.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A broad-shouldered Qhacret whose human shape looks as if it has been carved from wind-packed earth: dusty, coarse hair stands in irregular ridges, and fine pale grit clings to the creases of his skin even after washing. His wolf shape is large and rangy, with a coat like dunes under a starless sky, darker along the spine and powder-pale at the muzzle. He moves with a tracker’s deliberate economy, placing each foot as though the ground might be listening. In company he takes up more space than he seems to notice, standing close enough to make strangers feel they have entered his trail. Unexpectedly, he carries a tiny, bright-blue glass bead on his belt and polishes it whenever he waits.

Clothing

Layered travel wraps in dust-colored wool and hide, a high scarf against grit, soft-soled boots, and a weathered hood that breaks up his outline. Small bone toggles are carved as trail marks. He wears no bright metal except for the tiny blue glass bead.

Body language

He plants his feet wide and settles his shoulders as if bracing against a crosswind, often crowding a doorway without realizing it. When tracking, he becomes nearly still except for two fingers rubbing a trace between them. Around frightened children, he deliberately turns one shoulder away and lowers his head so his size feels less like a threat.

Dusty brown with pale, sand-colored strands; coarse and wind-ruffled.
Skin
Warm brown with a dry, dusty finish; pale grit settles visibly in the creases at his knuckles and throat.

Adult, approximately 41

Distinguishing features

Dust-colored hair and skin that hold a faint veil of grit even after washing.
A broad, steady stance that makes him seem to occupy more space than he intends.
A vivid blue glass bead on his belt, polished smooth by his thumb.
In wolf form, a pale, powdery muzzle and a coat that resembles wind-scoured dunes.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Patient with the land, impatient with needless risk, and unexpectedly gentle with frightened people. He can be generous with shelter yet suspicious of anyone who offers it too easily. When calm, he explains his reasoning; when pressed for time, he gives blunt orders and assumes others can keep up. He wants people to make their own choices, but fear of another preventable loss makes him reach for control.

Alignment
Pragmatic and protective; he keeps promises to people, not employers.

Quirks

Tests a trail by tasting a grain of dust, then spits it out with a quiet click.
Counts doorways and exits under his breath, but counts in pairs and starts over if interrupted.
Turns his blue bead exactly once around its cord before agreeing to a dangerous plan.
Leaves tiny crescent-shaped scuffs beside safe water points, then disguises them as ordinary animal marks.

Habits

At a new site, he circles once before choosing where to stand, checking wind, exits, and footprints.
He rarely commits to a route until he has tested the dust with two fingers.
When a child is frightened, he turns his body sideways and speaks from a respectful distance rather than looming over them.
After a dangerous journey, he checks everyone else's boots and supplies before tending to his own.

Traits · 4

Reads a stranger's practical competence before their reputation.
Protects vulnerable people without expecting gratitude, then struggles to let them make risky choices.
Can be dryly funny around trusted companions, especially after a route goes wrong.
Distrusts easy certainty, including his own.

Flaws · 3

Takes responsibility for other people's choices and can become controlling while trying to protect them.
Keeps important information to himself until he has already acted, putting allies at risk.
Has difficulty accepting help when a job involves a trail he believes only he can read.

Fears · 3

That his pursuit skills will lead a search party straight to a safe refuge.
That Yara will mistake his protectiveness for a claim over her future.
That he will again obey a contract until it is too late to see who will suffer.

Wants and needs · 3

A route that keeps refugees safe without relying on one legendary tracker.
The truth about what Tovio knows and why he has not exposed the betrayal.
Allies who will challenge his plans before he risks other people's lives.

Combat

HP 72 · 30 feet in humanoid form; 40 feet in wolf form, both custom profile values for this NPC

Avoids a stand-up fight. He studies the ground, uses cover and darkness, and attacks whoever is threatening an escape route. He uses the grit-flare to break sight lines, then closes with his knife or shifts to wolf form if an enemy is isolated. He withdraws rather than pursue if doing so would expose the people he is protecting.

Qhacret shifting. Karesh can assume a lean, sand-dusted wolf form. In this custom Generic Fantasy profile, he keeps his hit points and trained skills while shifted; his bite replaces his knife attack, and he cannot use hand-held equipment.
Scent-trail reading. Given a trace or a scent-bearing object, Karesh can follow a trail through windblown terrain unless it has been deliberately masked or overwhelmed.
Night-route memory. After traveling a route once, Karesh can recall its turns, hazards, and reliable shelter points with exceptional accuracy.
Custom combat resolution. For actions below, roll a d20 and add the listed skill bonus, if any. The guide sets a difficulty appropriate to the scene. These are custom rulings for this Generic Fantasy profile, not claims about a canonical ruleset.

Actions

Hooked trail-knife. Custom attack: roll d20 + 8 against the target's defense. On a hit, deal damage. If Karesh began the encounter hidden or the target is distracted, deal an additional damage once per turn.
Dustfang bite. Custom attack, wolf form only: roll d20 + 8 against the target's defense. On a hit, deal damage. A target of Karesh's size or smaller must pass a guide-set strength test or be knocked prone.
Grit-flare. Karesh throws a ceramic grit-flare into a space within 30 feet. Creatures looking toward it must pass a guide-set awareness test or lose their next clear sight of the area. It makes no sound and does not deal damage.

Possessions

A blue glass bead polished smooth from years of handling.
A pocket-sized route-hide of the Shiverways.
A small kit for scent and track analysis.
Several messages from Tovio, kept hidden in a sealed wrap.

Background

Karesh grew up among Qhacret pack-trailers who crossed the Shiverways, learning to read disturbed grit, old smoke, and the way frightened people avoid looking back. He became a celebrated tracker after following a fugitive across three continents and two years without losing the scent. His employer, Tovio, had called the quarry a dangerous courier. At the end of the trail, Karesh found a Wildborn child, Yara, hiding beneath a collapsed way-station and carrying no weapon. The child had been blamed for a fire she had tried to escape. Karesh could have completed the contract; instead, he sent Tovio a false trail and walked Yara out under his own protection. That choice cost him his position and made him a wanted man. Now he works with the Veilrend Covenant, a pack that secretly smuggles Wildborn to safety along the Shiverways near Vaereth's Hollow, during the unbroken dark of Perma Night. He trusts Orua, a patient route-runner who challenges his habit of making every decision alone, and he still receives occasional messages from Tovio, who knows Karesh betrayed him but has not yet revealed the truth to their former employers. Karesh is currently trying to move a group of children past a search post without drawing a patrol onto the Covenant's safe route.

Role in the story

A wary ally, guide, and former hired tracker whose knowledge can help the party find people or evade a search. His choices may force the party to decide whether they will protect refugees at the cost of a clean, easy victory.
