Baret
Baret
At the table
Voice
A dry, weather-rough voice shaped by cold air, scarf-filtered patrol calls, and years of giving directions over wind. His consonants are crisp; his sentences tend to stop cleanly rather than trail off. When amused, a short breathy huff escapes before he can suppress it.
His voice has a dry rasp from years of breathing cold air through a scarf, with a slight catch on long sentences. He places words like a patrol leader placing markers: clear, spaced, and hard to mistake. His accent carries the clipped rhythm of Qhacret travel calls.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treats practical help as a more trustworthy introduction than a speech. He will share information with people who keep their word and protect vulnerable travelers. To win his cooperation, offer a plan that accounts for retreat, supplies, and the people who cannot fight. Threats against his pack end discussion quickly.
Goal
Find a safe way to secure the waystation's supplies before the camps' food runs out, without leading raiders back to the Qhacret shelters.
Motivation
To keep the Qhacret camps alive without making another generation inherit a choice between abandoning their wounded and risking everyone.
Appearance
In humanoid form Baret stands broad and forward-leaning, with an icy pallor that takes on the blue sheen of black ice in hard light. His hair is white at the temples and dark at the roots, usually tied back with a strip of old harness leather. Fine pale scars stipple his forearms and collarbone, the accumulated marks of a life spent in close fighting rather than one theatrical wound. He moves with a wolf's economical caution: head angled slightly, weight already set to turn. His weathered coat is patched at the elbows with mismatched wool, but its cuffs are covered in tiny, painstakingly even stitches in bright rust-red thread, a startlingly domestic flourish on a war champion. In wolf shape, his coat is dense and snow-white, with a charcoal muzzle and a faint blue glint along the guard hairs.
Clothing
A layered hide-and-wool coat with a poor fit at the shoulders, repaired with broad gray patches and close-set rust-red stitches at the cuffs. A leather harness holds his sword and a rolled blanket. He wears a fur-lined hood, thick mitts, and snow gaiters, all carefully maintained despite their age.
Body language
He keeps his shoulders angled toward the nearest threat and leaves his hands visible when speaking with strangers. When uneasy, he shifts his weight as if choosing a direction to charge. Around injured people, his stance loosens and he crouches to meet their eye line.

Background
Baret was born among the Qhacret camps that move along the Shiverways, where the dark season does not lift and a warm bed is something you make with your own back. He learned to fight as a young pack-runner, carrying messages between scattered shelters before he was old enough to carry a proper blade. His first battle was a retreat gone wrong: an avalanche cut off the trail, and his warband's veteran champion ordered the young to flee while the older fighters held the pass. Baret disobeyed, doubling back to drag a wounded rival out of the snow. The champion died buying them time. Baret has never stopped believing the retreat was both necessary and unforgivable. He rose to war champion through patient, unglamorous work: escorting stragglers, teaching young fighters not to chase bait, and keeping feuding packmembers from turning a victory into a vendetta. He serves the Veilrend Covenant, whose patrols protect Qhacret travelers and their winter stores. The Covenant's current dispute is over a sealed waystation near Vaereth's Hollow. Its stores could keep several camps alive, but opening it may expose a concealed route to raiders. Baret's younger cousin Dzelma wants the supplies taken now; his old companion Oruji argues that the danger is too great. Baret is trying to find a third answer before hunger makes the decision for them.
Role in the story
A formidable ally, wary gatekeeper, or principled obstacle. Baret can lead the party across the Shiverways and help resolve the waystation crisis, but he will not trade the safety of scattered camps for a quick victory.
