Edrik Sorn
Edrik Sorn
At the table
Voice
His voice has a dry, slightly rasped edge from salt air and years of speaking across crowded rooms. He draws a short breath through his nose before reading an unfamiliar name aloud, then gives it careful, even weight. When tired, his consonants become clipped, like a clerk marking a form complete.
He speaks in well-separated clauses, with the practical vocabulary of someone who has spent years distinguishing a mooring line from a towline. His humor arrives dry and level, often as an observation rather than a punchline. He pauses before names, giving each one the care of an entry being copied into a record.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Edrik as an attentive but guarded ally. Bring dates, witnesses, or documents and he will make time for you. Demand that he choose a side before the facts are clear and he will become courteous, procedural, and difficult to move. Demonstrating that delay itself is causing harm can break through his caution.
Goal
Find the missing contracts before the Council votes on the new harbor closure, then force a public hearing before anyone can quietly bury the evidence.
Motivation
To preserve a civic process that can still correct its own mistakes, without becoming the person who uses procedure to excuse them.
Appearance
Edrik has a long, narrow face, a blunt nose, and a permanent crease between his brows that makes him look as though he has just found a clause nobody else noticed. His gait is a distinctive, measured side-step: he turns his shoulders before his feet, as if making space for an unseen person to pass. He stands unnervingly still while listening, then moves in quick, exact bursts to retrieve a paper or reposition a chair. His unexpected detail is a tiny carved wooden gull, polished smooth by years of handling, which he keeps tucked into his official collar rather than displaying as a trinket.
Clothing
A salt-faded navy clerk's coat with reinforced elbows, a high linen collar, and narrow pockets full of folded docket slips. He wears a waxed canvas shoulder cape on the quay and keeps his boots meticulously cleaned despite the harbor mud.
Body language
He holds his shoulders level and keeps his hands folded over the same corner of his desk. When a fact catches his attention, one thumb rubs the carved gull at his collar. He angles his body toward whoever has spoken least, but his feet remain pointed toward the nearest exit.

Distinguishing features
Personality
11 traits and drivesEdrik is patient enough to let an opponent finish a foolish argument and sharp enough to remember every word afterward. He prizes fairness, yet distrusts dramatic appeals to justice; he will protect a slow process until he sees that slowness is doing harm. In a quiet office he is wry and unexpectedly warm, while in public hearings he becomes precise and hard to read. With family he is less guarded but more stubborn.
- Alignment
- Lawful Neutral, with a personal preference for workable fairness over tidy procedure.

Combat
AC 11 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Edrik has no formal combat training. He calls for help, puts furniture or a doorway between himself and an attacker, and tries to escape with the most important record. If cornered, he uses his quill knife to create an opening rather than pursue a fight.

Background
Edrik began as a copyist for the Harbor Council, where he learned that a misplaced comma could cost a fishing family its boat. Years later, during the winter of the split moorings, two rival captains arrived armed and ready to fight over a collision. Edrik discovered that the disputed contract had been copied from an older agreement with a different tide schedule. He persuaded both crews to wait while he found the original, but the delay let a storm surge destroy three unmoored vessels. He has never forgotten that orderly process can still fail people. Since then, he has become the Council's senior clerk and keeper of disputed contracts, quietly building a reputation as the person who can get enemies to keep talking. He is considered the likely successor to the First Bell, the Council's presiding officer, but his ability to find a compromise makes both hardliners and reformers wonder whose interests he serves. His sister, Seshra, runs a small net-mending shop and thinks he has mistaken caution for virtue. His former apprentice, Thesin, left the Council after Edrik declined to expose a powerful shipowner without stronger evidence. Now a set of contracts has vanished from the archive, and one of them may prove that the Council itself ordered a dangerous harbor closure.
Role in the story
A valuable intermediary whose neutrality can open doors, but whose caution may obstruct urgent action. He can become a reliable source, a political obstacle, or the fragile hinge on which a public inquiry turns.

- Faction
