Umaia Valescu
Umaia Valescu
At the table
Voice
A clear, lightly husky voice with the dry edge of someone used to speaking through cold air and road dust. Years of calling warnings over wagon wheels have made her consonants precise and easy to pick out in a crowd.
She speaks in practical clauses, shaped by years of calling directions over rain and wagon noise. Her word endings are clipped when giving instructions, but in private she allows pauses to stretch while she chooses exactly what she means. She rarely raises her voice; when urgency strikes, her consonants become sharply clear rather than louder.
Speech patterns
How to play them
She offers a practical service first, such as directions, a bandage, or a weather warning. She trusts repeated actions more than grand claims. If treated with patience, she shares her father's disappearance; if pressured, she gives useful facts but withholds names.
Goal
Find her father's last known route and learn whether he is alive, while building a reliable chain of aid stations along the road.
Motivation
She wants to make the roads safer without becoming so guarded that she stops trusting people altogether.
Appearance
A young human woman with East Asian features, a softly squared jaw, and a face that seems composed until she notices someone in distress. Her skin has a warm golden-brown cast. Black hair, smooth at the crown and slightly crimped from rain, is gathered into a low knot; loose wisps cling at her temples. She walks with the measured, heel-first care of someone accustomed to muddy roads, yet turns her head quickly toward small sounds. Her heavy cloak hangs in layered folds, its hem darkened by travel. The unexpected detail for a road medic is her immaculate, carefully squared fingernails, kept so even on the trail.
Clothing
A faded blue-gray wool tunic, a cream linen underlayer, practical dark trousers, and a heavy, weatherproof brown traveling cloak with a broad hood. The cloak's lower edge is worn smooth and shiny at the left side from repeated brushing against a saddle. Her portrait shows no visible weapons, tools, or accessories.
Body language
She stands with her weight balanced as if a road might turn to mud beneath her. Her eyes go to doorways, windows, and the hands of anyone who speaks too quickly; she rarely looks directly at a speaker for long, but notices every change in their posture. When she listens, she holds still enough to seem absent, then answers with unnerving precision.

Background
Umaia was raised near the old road station of Kett's Cut, where her mother, Efa, repaired packs and her father, Grigor, guided caravans through the marsh. As a child she learned to read a traveler by their pace and the way they watched a room. At sixteen, a spring flood swept a wagon off the causeway. Umaia and her father pulled survivors from the water, but a frightened guard barred the station doors to keep the soaked refugees out. Umaia obeyed him until she heard a child coughing on the other side. She broke the latch with a stone and let them in. Her father lost his place as a guide for defending her, and the experience changed her: she still plans carefully, but she no longer trusts rules that demand she leave someone outside. Now she carries remedies between scattered settlements, trying to find her father, who disappeared after taking work with a caravan headed through the high passes. Her former employer, Tegan, insists the job was ordinary; Umaia suspects he knows more than he admits.
