At the table

“You may answer now, later, or not at all. The risk changes with each choice.”
From how they speak

Voice

Aisüle speaks from a lifetime of reading names aloud in echoing halls and asking questions across crowded rooms. Her voice has a dry, articulate edge, with a slight rasp from years of archive dust and late-night interviews. She shapes consonants carefully and lets the ends of questions hang, not as a threat but as an invitation she expects people to notice.

Her sentences are shaped like careful testimony: clear, orderly, and exact about sequence. She often asks a question in a tone that sounds generous, then waits long enough for the answer to become uncomfortable. When discussing the safety of a witness, her language turns practical and blunt.

Speech patterns

Begins with gentle, ordinary questions, then asks for exact sequence, timing, and who was present.
Repeats a person's own wording before asking what they meant by it.
Uses conditional phrasing: "If that were true, what would you expect to see next?"
Offers clear choices rather than false reassurance: "You may answer now, later, or not at all. The risk changes with each choice."

How to play them

Treat Aisüle as a patient investigator, not an oracle. She asks what the characters saw, what they inferred, and what they are afraid to say. She shares verified facts in exchange for precise information, but will not reveal a protected witness's location merely because the party is persuasive. Demonstrating respect for a witness's choices earns her trust faster than claiming noble intentions.

Goal

Keep the endangered witness alive long enough to give testimony, then expose the Court's senior patron without destroying the network that protects other witnesses.

Motivation

To make testimony survivable without turning the people who give it into instruments of the Court.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Aisüle is a compact, upright woman with a deliberately unhurried gait, placing each foot as if testing a floorboard for secrets. Her dark hair is drawn into a smooth coil threaded with thin strips of paper. Her ink-stained fingertips are usually clean everywhere else, and her sleeves fall in precise, unbroken lines. She smells distinctly of bitter orange peel, sealing wax, and the faint mineral tang of old rain. She knows about the orange peel and offers it to visitors as a courtesy, never explaining that it helps her recognize when a witness has been in her archive.

Clothing

A charcoal travelling coat with deep inside pockets, a high collar, and discreet stitched loops for keys. Beneath it she wears a plum-colored waistcoat and a plain linen blouse. The coat is practical rather than ceremonial, though its cuffs are carefully mended with nearly invisible thread.

Body language

Her posture is nearly still, but her attention is not: her eyes track hands, doorways, and changes in breathing. She favors her left side when standing, keeping her right hand free to open a folio or offer a chair. At moments of doubt, she presses her thumb against the ridge of her seal-stamp.

Distinguishing features

The recognizable scent of bitter orange peel follows her, and she knows it.
Her stillness feels attentive rather than passive; she seems to notice the movement of every hand in the room.
Paper slips are woven through her hair, each carrying a short cipher that only she can read.
She carries a folded child's paper boat in her coat pocket, an unexpected keepsake for a senior investigator.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Measured and genuinely curious, Aisüle enjoys the puzzle of a difficult account but dislikes treating people as puzzles. She is eloquent when explaining a procedure and unexpectedly plainspoken when someone is in danger. In a calm room she gives others time to find their words; under pressure she becomes decisive and can sound cold, especially when she is hiding how frightened she is.

Alignment
Lawful neutral, with a growing distrust of institutions that confuse procedure with justice.

Quirks

Folds discarded paper into tiny boats and leaves them pointed toward the nearest exit.
Taps a seal-stamp twice against her thumb before opening any sealed testimony.
Offers visitors a piece of candied orange peel, then watches whether they accept it before continuing.
Counts the chairs in a room whenever someone mentions a meeting.
Writes a question on the back of her hand when she is afraid she will forget to ask it.

Habits

Checks the door, the window, and the nearest reflective surface before beginning an interview.
Keeps conversation moving with questions, but allows long silences when someone is choosing whether to trust her.
If a witness is frightened, she explains exactly what will happen next, including the limits of what she can promise.
When angry, she becomes brisk and physically active: sorts papers, opens drawers, and starts making calls rather than raising her voice.

Traits · 4

She is patient with confusion but intolerant of deliberate cruelty disguised as procedure.
She values exact language, yet tells small comforting lies when she believes the truth would endanger someone.
She is curious about strangers and guarded about herself.
She can be tender toward frightened witnesses and severe toward officials who frighten them.

Flaws · 3

She withholds information even from allies until she has tested their judgment.
Her careful process can become an excuse to delay a decision that demands moral courage.
She takes responsibility for failures that were never hers alone, then grows resentful when others accept her help.

Fears · 3

That she will protect a powerful institution instead of the people it was meant to serve.
That the witness she has hidden will be found because of a mistake she repeats from her youth.
That her brother's old testimony will someday force her to choose between family and the Court's rules.

Wants and needs · 4

She wants the endangered witness to choose freely whether to testify.
She needs proof of who altered the protection order.
She needs allies who can challenge her judgment without betraying a witness.
She wants her brother to remain ignorant of the danger attached to his old testimony.

Combat

AC 11 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

Aisüle avoids violence, putting desks, locked doors, and allies between herself and an attacker. She uses her voice to distract and direct witnesses toward exits. If escape is impossible, she strikes with her cane or throws her seal-stamp, then retreats toward cover. She will not risk a protected witness to save her own archive.

Custom feature, Sealed Testimony. Aisüle can preserve a spoken account in a waxed, rune-marked folio. The record is tamper-evident, but not magically proof of truth.
Custom feature, Gentle Cross-Examination. After speaking with someone for ten minutes, Aisüle can identify one inconsistency in their account if they have knowingly contradicted themselves. This is not mind reading and does not reveal which statement is true.
Custom feature, Witness Protocol. Aisüle knows safe routes, aliases, and practical methods for moving a threatened witness discreetly.

Actions

Walking-Cane Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 2 () bludgeoning damage. Aisüle avoids fighting unless cornered.
Seal-Stamp Flick. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 30/90 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () piercing damage. She throws a small steel seal-stamp as an improvised weapon.
The Kindly Question (Custom). Aisüle asks a single carefully framed question and watches the response. One creature within 30 feet that can hear and understand her must succeed on a Wisdom (Insight) check or reveal an involuntary tell, such as looking toward a concealed exit or clutching a hidden pocket. This does not compel an answer.

Reactions

Get Behind Me (Custom). When a creature Aisüle can see within 30 feet makes an attack against a witness or unarmed ally, she calls out a warning. The target may move up to 5 feet without provoking an opportunity attack from that creature. Once per short rest.
Custody Clarification (Custom). When challenged about a sealed record, Aisüle can immediately state one verifiable detail about its chain of custody, if she knows one. This can redirect a conversation but does not prevent anyone from taking the record.

Background

Aisüle was raised among ferry clerks and courthouse runners, where she learned that a name written in the wrong place could ruin a life. As a young copyist, she once altered the route on a witness's protection order to spare the witness a frightening overnight transfer. The route was safer on paper, but the delay exposed the witness to the people pursuing him. He survived, though his testimony was lost and his family scattered. Aisüle never again mistook a tidy file for a safe person. She built the Lantern Court's sealed-testimony practice from that failure, insisting that every protected account have a living custodian and a second, independent route to safety. Now she is First Shutter, responsible for deciding which testimony is hidden, who may read it, and when concealment becomes complicity. Her former mentor, Brast Vard, believes she is weakening the Court by questioning its senior officers. Meanwhile, she has quietly arranged temporary shelter for a witness whose account implicates a patron the Court depends on.

Role in the story

Aisüle can connect the party to witnesses, investigations, and hidden histories. Her loyalties create a moral dilemma: she may conceal evidence to protect a vulnerable person, even when the characters need that evidence to stop a threat.
