Voice

Mira's voice has a dry, slightly rasped edge from years of calling directions through dust and traffic. It carries cleanly without sounding grand, and she shapes names carefully so they can be heard in a crowd. When tired, a breath catches at the end of longer instructions; she covers it by immediately giving the next one.

She speaks in clipped, practical phrases shaped by triage work and the need to be heard over street noise. She often leads with a person's name or a verb, and uses neighborhood directions instead of formal street titles. When calm, her humor is dry and precisely timed; when angry, her consonants become hard and her words more exact, not softer.

Speech patterns

Gives short, specific instructions during emergencies: names, directions, and what to do with one's hands.
Asks practical questions before personal ones, such as whether someone can breathe or who is missing.
Uses dry humor to cut through panic, then immediately checks whether anyone took the joke as permission to stop moving.
When discussing officials, distinguishes between a person being frightened and a person choosing to be careless.

How to play them

Mira responds best to practical offers: carry supplies, guide residents, check a building, or help persuade the ward-station crew. She tests promises against immediate actions. She will share what she knows with anyone who takes civilian safety seriously, but challenges confident claims unsupported by evidence.

Goal

Evacuate the residents from the buckling street and stop the nearby ward-station from drawing the arcane surge into occupied buildings.

Motivation

Mira wants to spare her neighbors the helpless waiting she remembers from the conduit disaster, and to prove that local knowledge and fast action matter as much as official authority.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Mira is compact and wiry, with warm umber skin and close-cropped black curls that have escaped their scarf in tight springs. Her face is broad and alert, her dark brown eyes constantly checking doorways, rooflines, and the hands of anyone near her. She moves in quick, measured sidesteps, favoring the outer edge of a crowd so she can see past it; even while listening, she keeps one foot angled toward the nearest exit. Her sleeves are rolled to the elbow, showing forearms dusted with chalk and medicinal green stains. Unexpectedly, she carries a tiny brass wind-up bird on a cord at her belt and winds it when she thinks no one is looking. People remember her as a brisk, practical presence who seems to have mapped every way out of the room.

Clothing

A soot-brown work coat with deep pockets, a faded green scarf, sturdy trousers, and flat-soled boots wrapped at the ankles against dust. Her cuffs are permanently marked with chalk and crushed herb stains. A weatherproof satchel hangs cross-body, leaving her hands free.

Body language

She keeps her weight on the balls of her feet and turns her whole body toward whoever is speaking, while her gaze keeps making brief checks of exits and windows. When deciding whether to trust someone, she stops moving completely. Under pressure, she taps two fingers against her thigh in a silent count.

A brass wind-up bird, scratched and slightly dented, hangs from her belt.
Green herb stains and white chalk smudges mark her sleeves despite frequent washing.
She walks in quick sidesteps around crowds instead of pushing straight through them.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Mira is compassionate but not soothing by default: she would rather give a frightened person a useful task than promise everything will be fine. She is patient with pain and confusion, yet impatient with avoidable delay. In ordinary conversation she is wry and observant; under pressure she turns brisk and directive. Once the danger passes, she can be unexpectedly playful, though she struggles to accept care herself.

Neutral good

Quirks

Winds the brass bird exactly three turns when she needs to think, even though it only reliably chirps after two.
Marks safe doorways with a small chalk arrow and crosses out the mark herself once the route is no longer safe.
Keeps a mental count of people in a group and quietly recounts whenever someone joins or leaves.
Tucks stray loose objects into the pockets of the person most likely to need them later.
Tests a floor with the heel of her staff before stepping onto unfamiliar stone.

Habits

Counts visible exits as soon as she enters a room, then positions herself where she can watch both the door and the people most likely to need help.
Checks patients in a fixed order: breathing, bleeding, awareness, then names and family connections.
When officials delay, she begins moving people to safety first and argues about procedure afterward.
After a frightening event, she becomes brisk and task-focused until everyone else is safe; only then do her hands begin to shake.

Traits · 4

Offers help without asking for gratitude, but remembers exactly who showed up when help was needed.
Treats frightened people gently and obstructive authority with blunt precision.
Is protective of younger people while resenting being treated as their guardian.
Can laugh at absurdity in a crisis, then feel guilty for laughing once it is over.

Flaws · 3

She takes responsibility for problems beyond her control and can become controlling when frightened.
Her distrust of bureaucratic assurances makes her slow to accept help from people in uniform.
She hides her own exhaustion until it affects her judgment.

Fears · 3

That a preventable structural failure will take people while officials debate responsibility.
That Olli will mistake her caution for lack of faith in him and take a reckless risk to prove himself.
Being forced to choose which injured person receives help when there is time for only one.

Wants and needs · 4

Residents moved away from the buckling street before the next surge.
A chance to inspect the ward-station readings without exposing Tavi.
Someone trustworthy to take charge of evacuation while she treats the injured.
Rest and food after the crisis, though she will not ask for either.

Combat

AC 10 · HP 7 · 30 ft.

Mira is a noncombatant. She prioritizes getting civilians behind cover, stabilizing the injured, and finding a clear escape route. If threatened, she uses her staff to create distance and retreats toward allies or a doorway. She will not pursue an enemy or knowingly leave a patient behind.

Custom feature. Triage by Touch. Mira can stabilize a creature at 0 hit points with a successful Wisdom (Medicine) check, using a free hand and one use of her field kit.
Custom feature. Streetwise Evacuation. Mira has advantage on checks to find a safe route through crowded alleys, rubble, or familiar neighborhood streets.

Actions

Walking Staff. Mira makes one melee attack with her walking staff: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage, or 4 () if used with two hands. She avoids fighting unless cornered.
Field Dressing. Mira targets a creature she can reach and makes a Wisdom (Medicine) check. On a success, if the creature has 0 hit points, it becomes stable. This action does not restore hit points.
Clear the Lane (Custom). Mira shouts a route and points out hazards to up to three creatures who can hear her within 30 feet. Each can use its reaction to move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks, provided its path is not blocked.

Reactions

Drag Clear (Custom). When a creature Mira can see within 5 feet is hit by an attack, she can use her reaction to pull that creature 5 feet toward herself or an adjacent safe space. The creature must be willing, and the movement cannot pass through an occupied space.

Services they sell

Basic first aid and stabilization for injured residents.
Guidance through familiar alleys, service passages, and evacuation routes.
Neighborhood knowledge about damaged buildings, local families, and safe gathering points.

Rewards they can give

A hand-drawn route map marking service lanes, weak paving, and shelter entrances.
A trusted introduction to residents who can provide safe lodging or neighborhood information.
A small supply of practical first-aid materials, if Mira has enough left after the emergency.

Background

Mira grew up above a narrow apothecary stall in a district built over old drainage channels. Her mother taught her poultices and fever care; her father, a survey runner, taught her to read old street marks and spot unsafe masonry. When Mira was seventeen, a neglected conduit burst under a tenement row. She spent the night guiding neighbors through a smoke-filled courtyard while officials argued over whose ward-station had jurisdiction. Her younger brother, Olli, survived, but their neighbor Kettu did not. Afterward, Mira trained as a street medic and made herself useful to anyone who could not afford a formal healer. She now works with residents near the buckling street and has been trying to persuade the ward-station crew to shut down a misdirected surge before it pulls force into occupied buildings. She trusts the junior ward technician, Tavi, but clashes with station supervisor Korke, who insists the readings are within tolerance. Mira still sends medicine to her mother and avoids telling Olli how much danger she takes on.

Role in the story

An ally and street medic in the quest "Prelude Session 6: Audience with the Archmage." She gives the party an immediate civilian-safety stake in the crisis, local knowledge of the buckling street, and evidence that the ward-station's surge routing threatens occupied buildings.

“Her mother taught her poultices and fever care; her father, a survey runner, taught her to read old street marks and spot unsafe masonry.”
From their background
Faction
Independent neighborhood street medic; informally trusted by residents around the old drainage district. Not a member of the ward-station staff.

Olli Pell, her younger brother, is a confident roof-runner who believes Mira takes needless risks and has begun avoiding her warnings.
Tavi, a junior ward technician at the nearby station, quietly shares equipment readings with Mira and fears being blamed for the station's failures.
Korke, the station supervisor, dismisses Mira's warnings as neighborhood panic, though he once relied on her to treat a serious injury.
Mira's mother, Salla, still runs the family apothecary stall and expects Mira to come home before dawn.
