At the table

Voice

Dry and clear, with precise consonants and a measured breath. He sounds like someone accustomed to speaking over delicate instruments and making sure every qualification survives the room.

His voice has a dry, clear edge shaped by years of explaining delicate measurements over the scrape of instruments. He articulates names and quantities precisely, and his breath is usually even. When rattled, one brief catch interrupts his next sentence; after that, his words become clipped and exact, as though he is laying them out for inspection.

Speech patterns

Asks witnesses to describe what they directly saw before asking what they think it means.
Repeats a claim in neutral language, then asks whether the speaker agrees that he has represented it fairly.
Uses short, exact questions when testing the party and longer explanations when discussing uncertainty.
Corrects his own wording aloud if he notices that it implies more certainty than he has.

How to play them

Begin with a formal welcome and ask each party member to recount one observation from the disruption without interpretation. Explain that this is an examination of judgment, not a test of confidence. Reward honest uncertainty and corrections. If the party gives a coherent account, provide the known evidence, identify what remains unknown, and offer a field assignment with clear limits. If they exaggerate or conceal a mistake, challenge the inconsistency directly but allow them a chance to clarify.

Goal

Identify the source and mechanism of the leyline disruption, then entrust the dangerous field investigation only to people who can report what they find without turning suspicion into fact.

Motivation

To prevent avoidable harm without mistaking hesitation for wisdom.

Appearance

Cindreth has the composed, carefully maintained appearance of a man who treats himself as another instrument that must be calibrated. His olive skin is finely lined at the temples, and his long, ink-black hair is combed into a precise part and tied with a plain cord. His robes hang in crisp, layered planes, but their cuffs are faintly powdered with chalk and grit from fieldwork. He moves with economical steps and turns his whole body toward whoever is speaking, as if giving testimony his full attention. A surprising detail for a remote archmage: his belt carries a small tin of candied fennel, which he offers to nervous visitors with the solemnity of a treaty.

Clothing

Layered charcoal and deep teal robes fastened with practical copper clasps. The fabric is expensive but repeatedly mended at the elbows, and the inner hem is marked with tiny measuring stitches. He wears a weatherproof mantle for field inspections and soft boots made for quiet stone corridors.

Body language

He keeps his hands visible and still during interviews, but taps a thumbnail against the edge of his prism when a claim outruns its evidence. When rattled, his breath catches high in his chest for one beat, then becomes conspicuously measured; he does not hide the pause, but uses it to regain control.

Distinguishing features

His robes and instruments are meticulously arranged, but faint chalk dust is almost always visible on one sleeve.
He offers candied fennel to anxious visitors, a domestic kindness at odds with his severe examination style.
He exhales through his nose in a slow, controlled measure before giving a difficult answer.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Cindreth is patient with confused witnesses but impatient with confident guesses. He wants people to feel safe enough to tell the truth, yet his precise questions can make a room feel like a courtroom. In private, he is dryly funny and attentive to small comforts; under urgent pressure, he becomes brisk and more willing to take a risk than his reputation suggests.

Alignment
Lawful neutral

Quirks

Offers candied fennel to visitors as if it were a ceremonial part of the interview.
Turns his prism a quarter rotation whenever someone changes from describing an event to explaining it.
Labels his notes with three headings: Seen, Inferred, and Not Yet Known.
Counts observatory stair landings under his breath, but starts over if anyone speaks to him midway.

Habits

Separates confirmed observations, interpretations, and unanswered questions before making a consequential decision.
When pressed for an immediate judgment, asks what new fact would change the questioner's mind.
After a long day of examinations, walks the observatory's perimeter and checks each ward by hand.
If someone admits uncertainty plainly, he becomes noticeably more collaborative.
If a magical device behaves unexpectedly, he stops speaking and watches it until it either settles or gives him a reason to intervene.

Traits · 3

Careful without being timid: he will act decisively once the evidence clears his threshold.
Formally courteous but difficult to flatter, and unexpectedly warm toward people who admit mistakes.
Curious about unfamiliar perspectives, yet protective of the methods that once failed him.

Flaws · 3

His insistence on distinguishing evidence from inference can make frightened people feel cross-examined rather than helped.
He is slow to delegate work whose risks he understands, even when others are better suited to act quickly.
He can mistake emotional certainty for intellectual carelessness.

Fears · 3

That another premature diagnosis will cause people to trust a false explanation and suffer for it.
That his caution will cost the party or nearby communities the time they need.
That the leyline disturbance is adapting to the methods used to study it.

Wants and needs · 3

Reliable observations from the party, including mistakes and uncertainties.
Time to compare the party's account with the observatory's measurements.
A field team capable of following safety procedures without treating them as proof of danger's absence.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 82 · 30 ft.

Cindreth is an examiner, not a battlefield commander. He tries to establish distance, protect bystanders, and end a fight with control or escape rather than lethal force. He opens with defensive magic, uses force effects to interrupt immediate threats, and prioritizes anyone attacking a ward or civilian. His listed level is 0 because he is not intended as a player-character level build; the statistics below are a custom 5e-style NPC profile reflecting his formidable magical experience. If attacked without warning, his prearranged defenses and prepared spells matter more than his physical resilience.

Custom feature. Evidence Before Elegance. Cindreth will not endorse a theory until it accounts for every confirmed observation and names what evidence could disprove it.
Custom feature. Leyline Attunement. By studying a location for one minute, Cindreth can sense whether nearby magic is flowing steadily, blocked, or unnaturally diverted. This reveals no cause or creature by itself.
Custom feature. Prepared Containment. Once per day, Cindreth can activate a chalk-and-copper ward he has prepared in advance. For 1 minute, the ward outlines invisible magical disturbances within 30 feet, but does not restrain creatures.

Spells

Clairvoyance (level 3, divination). Creates an invisible magical sensor at a location within range and lets Cindreth see and hear from it for the duration. He uses this for remote inspection, not casual surveillance.
Arcane Eye (level 4, divination). Creates an invisible eye that can travel and see for the duration. Cindreth uses it to survey hazardous locations from a safe distance.
Dispel Magic (level 3, abjuration). Attempts to end one spell affecting a creature or object. Higher-level effects may require an ability check, resolved using the spell's normal rules.
Counterspell (level 3, abjuration). Attempts to interrupt a creature casting a spell, following the spell's normal rules.
Globe of Invulnerability (level 5, abjuration). Creates a ward that helps protect Cindreth from attacks and effects, following the spell's normal rules.
Wall of Force (level 5, evocation). Creates an invisible barrier that can block a spell or magical effect that would otherwise pass through it, subject to the spell's normal rules.
Bigby's Hand (level 5, evocation). Projects a powerful force that damages and pushes creatures in a line, following the spell's normal rules.
Hold Monster (level 5, enchantment). Creates a magical force that restrains a creature on a failed saving throw, following the spell's normal rules.
Invisibility (level 2, illusion). Makes a touched creature invisible until the spell ends or its normal conditions are met. Cindreth favors it for withdrawal and evacuation.
Shield (level 1, abjuration). Creates a barrier of magical force around the target, following the spell's normal rules.

Actions

Force Dart. Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 13 () force damage. Cindreth uses this only if escape or negotiation has failed.
Examiner's Prism. Cindreth presents a hand-sized prism and asks a creature he can see to answer one precise question. The prism gives no supernatural indication of truth; its purpose is to record the creature's words and reactions for later examination.

Reactions

Measured Deflection. When hit by an attack he can see, Cindreth adds 5 to his AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. He can then move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. This is presented as a custom defensive reaction rather than a claim about a specific class feature.
Counterspell. When a creature within 60 feet that Cindreth can see casts a spell, he can attempt to disrupt it. The caster must succeed on a ability check using its spellcasting ability or the spell has no effect. Cindreth can use this reaction three times per day.

Services they sell

Background

Cindreth earned his standing by patiently mapping small magical anomalies that other scholars dismissed as local superstition. His reputation changed after the Sable Quay incident: a leyline surge ruptured a public ward, and Cindreth, then a junior examiner, accepted a confident diagnosis before the evidence was in. The proposed repair worsened the rupture. He helped evacuate the district and spent years documenting what he had missed. That failure made him a formidable investigator and an exhausting colleague. He now directs the observatory at the Bent Stone, where his former apprentice, Gvrik, maintains the instruments and challenges his methods. Cindreth is also in quiet correspondence with Nzhara, a field surveyor who believes the current disruption is being deliberately redirected. Their evidence is incomplete, and Cindreth refuses to treat her suspicion as a conclusion. The present disturbance threatens several settlements and is growing faster than his instruments can map it. He has summoned the party to learn what they have seen, test whether they distinguish observation from inference, and decide whether to entrust them with dangerous fieldwork.

Role in the story

Questgiver and examiner in Prelude Session 6: Audience with the Archmage. Cindreth assesses whether the party can investigate the leyline disruption responsibly, supplies verified information, and sets the terms of a dangerous field assignment.
