Leandros
Leandros
At the table
Voice
A dry, weather-scoured voice with a faint breathy rasp, built for carrying over rain and river noise. His name, Leandros, has an easy, open-voweled flow; the rest of his speech is clipped and practical.
He speaks in compact sentences shaped by years of calling directions across wind and water. Consonants come out crisp and slightly dry, as if each word has to travel through cold air. When rattled, he takes one held breath and then releases a rough little hiss before answering.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Leandros as observant but not instantly trusting. He responds well to specific offers of help and clear plans. If the party asks about the flood, he will describe the rescue readily but deflect questions about the orchard and the old map. Demonstrating care for ordinary residents earns his confidence faster than boasting about heroics.
Goal
Find the person sabotaging the dikes and expose the motive before the next heavy rains.
Motivation
He wants to keep people alive without becoming the sort of authority who decides that some lives are acceptable losses.
Appearance
Leandros looks like a man shaped by years of standing in cold rain: his skin is wind-polished and rough around the knuckles, with fine pale lines where old sunburn has faded. His dark hair curls in damp ropes at his collar, and his brows bead with moisture even indoors. He moves with a careful, forward-leaning stride, placing each boot as though testing a riverbed. When startled, he holds his breath for a beat, then lets it out through his nose in a dry, rattling hiss. The unexpected detail is that he carries a tiny painted wooden bird in a padded box, and checks its chipped beak before any dangerous journey.
Clothing
A waxed brown-green cloak with patched seams, a boiled-leather vest, fingerless wool liners, and high boots stained by marsh water. He wears a narrow strip of faded yellow cloth around one wrist, knotted by his sister.
Body language
He angles his body toward the nearest exit and keeps one hand close to his bow, but turns his palms upward when trying to reassure someone. Under stress he briefly stops breathing, then exhales with a papery rasp.

Background
Leandros grew up guiding ferrymen through the reed-choked channels around the lowland settlement of Sedgewick. At nineteen, he took a seasonal post guarding the dikes. During a spring flood, a section of levee failed while the town's officials argued over whose district should pay for repairs. Leandros cut a sluice gate open against orders, saving the lower homes but sending the flood through a wealthy orchard. The orchard owner brought a ruinous suit; the ferrymen he saved paid his legal costs in secret. His former mentor, Thessa, still thinks he should have obeyed the chain of command, while his younger sister, Sava, believes he should have let the orchard drown. Now someone is sabotaging the dikes again, and the signs point to a surveyor's old map that Leandros himself helped update.
Role in the story
A local guide and uneasy ally whose knowledge can save a settlement, while his concealed alteration of the flood survey makes him a natural suspect in the current sabotage.
“At nineteen, he took a seasonal post guarding the dikes.”
- Faction
- A trusted independent warden of Sedgewick's dike communities, with no formal allegiance to the town council.
