Maite
Maite
At the table
Voice
Her voice has the dry, slightly rough edge of someone used to calling across rooftops in rain and wind. She breathes through her nose when concentrating; when startled, her breath catches audibly before she recovers and speaks faster.
She gives directions in compact, practical phrases, describing streets by their smells, sounds, and damaged masonry rather than official names. When comfortable, her words tumble out with quick corrections and dry humor. Under pressure she becomes sharply clear, speaking in short instructions and holding her breath between them.
Speech patterns
How to play them
She is guarded with anyone who asks for directions without explaining why, but quickly warms to people who respect local residents and listen to warnings. Earn her trust by helping with a small practical task, keeping a promise, or admitting when you do not know the way.
Goal
Document and preserve the Old City's hidden roof paths and service stairs before redevelopment seals them, while finding a way to repair her relationship with Andoni.
Motivation
Maite wants ordinary people to have ways out when a street, building, or life turns dangerous. She is driven by care and by the enduring fear that the next choice will be one she cannot live with.
Appearance
Maite is slight and petite, with warm ivory skin that flushes pink in the cold and damp, jaw-length dark brown curls that cling to her forehead after rain. Amber flecks brighten her hazel eyes. She balances as if the pavement might become a roof at any moment, one boot often braced against a rail; even standing still, she seems poised to slip through a gap before anyone notices. Her quick, guarded smile can look like an apology or a dare. She takes up little space by habit, but watches everyone who does. An unexpected softness in her practical look is the tiny brass swallow charm she keeps polished bright enough to catch lamplight.
Clothing
Neat soft linen city clothes beneath a plain grey cloak, brown trousers, and sturdy dark boots. Discreet inner pockets lie flat beneath her jacket. One cuff is turned just enough to reveal a tiny brass swallow charm. A folded, hand-marked map peeks from a pocket. She carries no visible weapon or tools.
Body language
She folds inward in crowds, shoulders slightly rounded and elbows close, then moves with startling confidence when a route opens. Her weight stays on the balls of her feet. When rattled, she holds her breath for a beat, then exhales through her nose in a sharp, measured puff and starts counting visible doors under her breath.

Personality
12 traits and drivesMaite is alert and quick to offer help, yet slow to reveal what she wants for herself. In a crisis she becomes decisive and brisk; afterward she replays every choice until she cannot sleep. With children and nervous strangers she is patient and lightly teasing. With officials who dismiss the neighborhood, she turns clipped and stubborn. She wants to be trusted, but resents being treated as if she belongs to everyone who needs rescuing.

Combat
AC 10 · HP 4 · 30 ft.Maite is not a trained fighter. She avoids direct confrontation, uses doorways and rooftop access to break sight lines, and calls out routes so allies can reposition. If cornered, she strikes once with an improvised object and immediately tries to escape or put an obstacle between herself and danger.

Background
Maite grew up above a drainwright's shop in the rain-choked Old City, learning which gutters held and which brickwork crumbled underfoot. Her mother, Idoia, repaired storm channels; her father vanished when Maite was nine, leaving behind a hand-drawn map of passages beneath the rooftops. At sixteen, Maite guided a group of neighbors across the roofs during a sudden flood. A roof gave way under her older brother, Andoni, and she had to choose between reaching him and leading three trapped children to safety. She got the children out. Andoni survived, but never forgave her for leaving him with a shattered leg and a lifetime of pain. That choice made Maite a trusted guide and a person who cannot bear to leave anyone behind, even when staying is foolish. She now marks safe paths for couriers, tenants, and anyone fleeing danger, while trying to keep a rooftop garden alive for her mother. The landlord's agent, Olúra, has begun sealing old access stairs before a planned demolition, and Maite is racing to document the hidden routes before the neighborhood is cut off.
Role in the story
A local guide, witness, or ally who can lead characters through the Old City's overlooked routes. Her map can reveal a hidden approach to a location, while her conflict with the redevelopment agent can draw the party into a neighborhood dispute. Her brother's resentment gives the characters a personal conflict they may help mend or worsen.
