Appearance
Old Joren looks like a man who has spent half his life in dust and the other half listening to it breathe back. His skin has the papery, sun-faded look of old ledger pages, and his movements are careful but not frail, as if every step is measured against invisible floorboards only he can hear. He wears a contradiction of neatness and neglect: a perfectly mended archivist's coat with one sleeve ink-stiffened and one elbow scorched by candle wax, trousers brushed clean at the knees but smeared with grave soil at the hem. His most striking feature is his lantern, which he carries even in daylight, though the glass is cracked and patched with copper wire. He seems ordinary until he turns his head and listens to empty air with the solemn attention of a priest hearing confession.
“Low, deliberate, and intimate, as if he is always trying not to wake someone. He tends to murmur in catalog terms, then suddenly becomes precise when the truth matters.”

Distinguishing Features
A cracked lantern that never quite goes dark
A silver catalog tag worn as a necklace
Thin white scars across both wrists from an old binding ritual
A left eye that waters whenever a spirit is near
Faint chalk dust permanently lodged in the lines of his hands
Voice
“A papery baritone with a soft rasp at the edges, like pages turning in a damp room”
Clothing
A soot-gray archivist's coat with inner pockets for keys, chalk, dried herbs, and folded notes, a collar pinned with a bronze catalog token, high boots repaired many times, and fingerless gloves to preserve his sense of touch
Body Language
He leans slightly forward as if perpetually reading something just below eye level. When uneasy, his fingers count imaginary lines along his knuckles. In conversation he rarely gestures widely, but when he is certain about a hidden route, he points with two fingers as though opening an invisible drawer.
