Appearance
Tuko is a compact, weather-cut old man whose body has narrowed with age without becoming frail. His long white beard is braided into three uneven cords, each bound with a different bit of colored thread. He moves with a deliberate, economical gait, placing each foot as though testing thin ice. His blue gambeson reaches almost to his knees and has been patched so many times that its quilting forms a map of old roads. Over it sits a plain steel cuirass, dull from years of oil and rain. A ring-mail coif covers his neck and cheeks, and his iron helmet has a narrow nasal guard that makes his face seem stern even when he is amused. The unexpected thing about him is his hands. They are broad, scarred, and soldier's strong, but he keeps the fingernails carefully polished and painted with tiny white dots, a habit learned from his late wife.
“His voice is low, dry, and surprisingly soft for a man accustomed to shouting over crowds. He speaks in short sentences, pauses before names, and makes even casual advice sound like a regulation.”

Distinguishing Features
A white scar runs from his left eyebrow to the corner of his mouth, giving his resting expression a permanent half-smile.
His beard is divided into three colored braids, one for each child he failed to bring home from the Red Snow winter.
He paints tiny white dots on his fingernails before every new moon.
The nasal guard of his helmet is bent slightly to the left from an old axe strike.
He carries a child's wooden whistle beneath his cuirass and touches it whenever someone mentions avalanches.
Voice
“A gravelly baritone with the rhythm of measured footsteps, softened by age and sharpened by decades of giving warnings that had to be obeyed”
Clothing
A long indigo-blue gambeson beneath a plain steel cuirass, reinforced leather belt, wool trousers, high road boots, ring-mail coif, iron helmet with nasal guard, and a faded red scarf tucked beneath the armor for warmth
Body Language
Tuko stands squarely, with his shield arm slightly forward even during ordinary conversation. He taps the butt of his spear once whenever he has made a decision. When angered, he becomes almost motionless. When genuinely happy, he rubs his polished fingernails together as if counting small coins.
