Mara Venn
Mara Venn
At the table
Voice
Measured and hushed, with a librarian's precision and a mother's fatigue beneath it
Low, exact, and faintly formal, with the cadence of someone used to reading aloud to rooms that are half listening. She never wastes a word when angry, but when grieving she becomes repetitive and gentle, as though each name must be laid down carefully so it will not break.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Mara is best approached with honesty, usefulness, and specifics. She responds well to clear plans, proof, and respectful attention to the missing. She grows warm when someone remembers a forgotten name or treats the dead with dignity. She becomes guarded if pressed about the abbey's deeper mysteries.
Goal
To send capable help into the ruins of the abbey before Greyhaven loses more villagers, and to uncover what the abbey has taken from the town's history.
Motivation
To stop the vanishings, preserve the town's memory, and prove that the people of Greyhaven are more than what the abbey can erase.
Appearance
Mara Venn is all angles softened by years of worry, a woman who looks carved from winter shore stone and then wrapped in soot-smudged velvet. She moves with a careful, economical grace, as if every step is counted and every breath budgeted. Her left hand is stained pale gold from old incense resin, while her right is ink-black to the wrist from years of copying names and lists. Around her neck hangs a tarnished key on a ribbon of red thread, and tucked into her coat she keeps a cracked mirror that she never lets face the moon. The strangest thing about her is her smile, which is bright and almost girlish when she is arranging flowers or making tea, yet vanishes into a funeral stillness the moment anyone mentions the abbey.
Clothing
A weatherproof mourning coat lined with faded blue wool, practical boots caked with old marsh silt, fingerless gloves, a chain of tiny brass keys, and a shawl stitched with the names of the dead in nearly invisible thread
Body language
She keeps her shoulders slightly forward as if protecting an unseen fire. When listening closely, she tilts her head and folds one hand over the other, thumb rubbing the knuckle of a scar. In fear she goes very still, but in anger her fingers become precise and restless, arranging nearby objects into perfect lines.

Distinguishing features
Personality
16 traits and drivesMara is compassionate with the vulnerable and ruthless with lies. She can be tenderly patient while mending a child's torn coat, then coldly surgical when cross-examining a suspicious witness. In public she appears composed, almost severe, but in private she is restless, superstitious, and quietly funny in a way that only emerges when she is exhausted or relieved. She believes every person deserves to be remembered correctly, yet she is oddly stingy with her own feelings and never says what she needs until it is nearly too late.

Combat
AC 11 · HP 18 · 30 ft.Mara is not a front-line fighter. She stays behind sturdier allies, uses terrain and choke points, and tries to disable rather than kill. If forced into battle, she opens with disorientation and retreats toward light, doors, or witnesses. She fights best when protecting others or defending records, bells, and thresholds.

Background
Mara was born in Greyhaven to a family of bellringers and undertakers, a trade that taught her early that every village lives beside its own graveyard. As a child she was sent to the abbey above the marsh to learn letters from the monks, because her mother believed names were a kind of armor. She excelled there, not because she was pious, but because she loved the ordered shelves, the candlewax smell, and the way silence could be made useful. Everything changed during the winter of the Borrowing. The abbey began returning villagers with their memories frayed and their names missing from their own mouths. Mara was one of the few who escaped the ruin with her identity intact, but only because an old novice shoved her through a reliquary door and sealed it behind her. She later found that novice's name had been scratched out of every ledger in Greyhaven. Since then Mara has made herself the patron and planner of the quest to the ruined abbey, gathering anyone capable enough to go where she cannot bear to tread. She is now Greyhaven's quiet organizer of relief, maps, funerary records, and missing-person notices. She bargains with traders, pleads with militia captains, and keeps a private wall of names written on scraps, bones, ribbons, and whatever else survives damp. Her current problem is that villagers keep vanishing in ones and twos, and every disappearance weakens the town's trust in her as much as it feeds her urgency. She suspects the abbey is not merely haunted, but hungry for identities, and that some part of her own past may already have been taken.
