Oruvane
Oruvane
At the table
Voice
A clear, slightly rough voice with a dry rasp from dust and stable air. He projects from the chest when calling a horse or a delivery name, and his laugh is a sudden, toothy bark. When he is tired, the rhythm of his speech takes on the clipped cadence of someone counting turns on a familiar road.
He speaks in short, useful phrases, shaped by years of calling across stables and roadside yards. His consonants are crisp from repeating names and directions over wind and wagon noise. When relaxed, he stretches vowels and lets a joke arrive a moment late; when cornered, he answers with precise details and refuses to guess.

How to play them
Meet him through an ordinary errand or a practical favor. He responds well to plain speaking and shared work, but reacts badly to anyone treating Tembi as a suspect before asking what she has done for him. Earn trust by offering choices and keeping confidences.
Goal
Find out what happened on the night he was found without making Tembi pay for telling him.
Motivation
He wants a home that does not depend on secrets, and a truth that can be faced without turning the people he loves into collateral.
Appearance
Oruvane has a long, expressive jaw and broad front teeth that show whenever he talks, eats, or tries not to laugh. He chews slowly and deliberately, as though every meal deserves respect. He walks with an odd, smooth hitch: his right heel barely seems to touch the ground, while his left foot plants with a soft, decisive slap. In crowds he can become nearly motionless, watching from beneath lowered brows; alone, he paces in tight loops. People tend to remember his toothy, unexpectedly open grin and the impression that he is listening to something just beyond the room.
Clothing
A patched umber coat with a deep inside pocket, a faded green scarf knotted twice, wool trousers, and boots repaired with mismatched leather. He wears no badge or royal colors.
Body language
His right heel skims the ground, giving his walk a quiet hitch. In tense rooms he goes very still, thumbs the rim of a small wooden button, and angles his shoulders between danger and anyone he considers family.

AC 10 · HP 5 · 30 feetOruvane is not a trained fighter. He keeps obstacles between himself and an attacker, uses his walking stick to make space, and runs toward cover or a crowded place. He uses dust only to escape, never to pursue. If Tembi or a child is threatened, he may take a reckless hit to give them time to flee.

Background
Lady Tembi Kgatla found Oruvane as an infant in a reed basket beneath the cracked arch of an abandoned royal waystation. A rainstorm had washed away every track except a line of dark wax impressed with the old king's private seal. Tembi, then a courier carrying medicine to a border village, took him home and raised him as her own. She taught him to mend harness, read weather, and recognize when a courteous question was really a threat. At twelve, Oruvane heard soldiers searching for a child born on the night the king's elder sibling vanished. Tembi hid him in a flour bin and afterward refused to explain what she knew. He now works as a runner and occasional stable hand, carrying messages between farms and the capital. He remains close to Tembi, but her silences have become a wound between them. His friend Drest, a blacksmith's apprentice, wants him to leave the dangerous roads; Oruvane keeps promising he will, after one more delivery. The court's old wardens have begun asking after the waystation and the child found there.
