King
King
At the table
“A hand. Three taps. I think she was laughing.”
Voice
His voice has a dry, wind-brushed rasp from years of calling warnings across open roads. Consonants land cleanly and firmly, like boot heels on a plank; the sound carries without becoming a shout. When speaking with Deka, he lets a rough, amused edge into his words. When speaking about the missing girl in his dreams, the certainty drains from his phrasing, though not from his gaze.
His speech is plain and carefully paced, shaped by years of issuing concise warnings and listening for trouble over wind and wagon noise. He favors concrete words over grand claims. When he is uncertain, he names the uncertainty instead of disguising it; when recalling his past, his sentences break into tactile impressions and half-remembered sounds.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treats strangers with measured courtesy and makes clear that his first duty is Deka's safety. He gives people room to speak, but watches their hands and the exits. Earn his trust by being candid, respecting Deka's choices, and helping people without demanding a reward. Mentioning a three-beat rhythm, a caravan raid, or a sister may make him briefly lose his practiced composure.
Goal
Find Kiwi and learn what happened to their family without abandoning the people who became his family afterward.
Motivation
King wants to recover the life stolen from him, but he is equally driven by the conviction that no one in his care should be left helpless as he once was.
Appearance
King stands an imposing 7 feet 2 inches, all long reach and coiled athletic leverage. His golden curls crowd into a springy halo, pulled back from his face and neck by a broad, patterned hairband from his homeland. He watches people with hazel eyes that seem to test every word for a hidden hinge. His posture is upright without stiffness; when waiting, he rests more weight on his back foot, as though leaving room for someone else to move first. The first thing most people notice after his height is a small, battered wooden bird hanging at his belt, its beak rubbed smooth from years of his thumb. Fine geometric tattoos, shared in pattern with his twin Kiwi, wind from his neck to his feet. Their repeated hooked lines resemble gust maps and family marks, though King cannot explain them.
Clothing
A close-fitting undershirt has one full sleeve with a thumb slot to keep the cuff in place, while the other side ends just over the shoulder. Over it he wears a fitted, padded vest embroidered with the Kgatla household crest, padded leather trousers, and plain, well-kept boots. His wide homeland hairband is patterned with small interlocking marks. The vest is tailored for movement rather than ceremony.
Body language
He makes himself a barrier without crowding the person he protects, angling his shoulders toward danger while keeping his face open to them. At rest he leans subtly back, knees loose and feet set as if expecting a gust. When a lie catches his attention, his eyes stay fixed on the speaker while one hand quietly shifts nearer the greatsword.

Personality
16 traits and drivesHe is vigilant without being suspicious of everyone, and kind without pretending every person is harmless. Around strangers he is reserved and observant; with Deka he becomes teasing and stubborn, willing to argue rather than flatter. In a crisis he is decisive and commanding. Afterward, when the danger has passed, he can grow awkwardly gentle and restless, unsure what to do with a room that no longer needs guarding.

Background
King and his twin sister Kiwi were born among a far-traveled air-genasi family with Goliath blood, whose kin marked important promises in geometric tattoos. Raiders attacked their caravan when the twins were children. King remembers a hand slipping from his, a wagon overturned in dust, and a girl's voice calling him by a childhood nickname he can no longer recall. He escaped into a dry ravine and was found feverish by Lady Tembi Kgatla, a passing noblewoman traveling home to her estate at Broad Ford. His memories of everything before the raid were gone. Lady Tembi took him in and arranged for him to train as the personal guard of her son, Deka. King became Deka's shield, sparring partner, and unwilling conscience as the boy studied magic. A formative moment came when Deka's uncontrolled practice set fire to a crowded winter storehouse. King could have saved his reputation by saying the blaze was an accident, but instead he told the tenants the truth and helped rebuild their homes. The disaster made him more than a dutiful weapon: he decided protection means telling people what they need to hear, even when they hate it. Now Deka is old enough to travel as a mage, and King's dreams have grown sharper. He remembers a girl's knuckles tapping a three-beat rhythm against his palm. Meanwhile, the old caravan road has seen new raider sightings, and Lady Tembi's influence is being challenged by a rival house that wants Deka's magical talent under its control. King tries to hold all these threads without letting his missing past endanger the family he has now.
