Gevan Keld
Gevan Keld
At the table
“Can you stand? Can you breathe? Then tell me what moved.”
Voice
His voice has a dry rasp from years of breathing dust and shouting over winches. It carries cleanly without becoming a bark, and he places emphasis on numbers, directions, and warnings as if calling a crew through a storm.
He speaks in clipped, worksite sentences built to travel through wind and machinery. Technical terms come easily, but he explains them plainly when asked. His humor is dry and often arrives a moment after everyone else has decided he is being serious.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Gevan is direct with anyone discussing the Long Hoist. He shares useful safety information freely, but asks visitors to describe what they have seen before trusting their conclusions. Respect practical competence, admit uncertainty, and he becomes a dependable ally. Dismiss a visible hazard or demand a false report, and he will refuse cooperation even if it costs him his position.
Goal
Keep travelers alive and make the Brotherhood's records reflect the actual strain placed on its equipment.
Motivation
He wants no traveler to die because a supervisor mistook a clean report for a sound cable.
Appearance
Gevan is a broad, weathered human with a copper-brown complexion and a square, work-worn face. His hair is clipped close and gone iron-gray at the temples; a fringe of pale cable lint often clings to it. He takes up more room than his height suggests, standing with his boots planted wide as though every floor might shift under load. When waiting, he leans his weight onto the balls of his feet, ready to catch a swinging line. His unexpectedly neat habit is to fold every scrap of paper into tiny, exact triangles before putting it away. He leaves the impression of a man who has already noticed which beam is groaning.
Clothing
A soot-brown work coat reinforced at the elbows, a canvas apron with tool loops, sturdy trousers, and boots with rope-scuffed toes. He wears a brass whistle on a cord and keeps a coil of fine measuring line wrapped across his chest.
Body language
He plants his feet as if bracing a load, angles his shoulders to keep a clear view of exits and machinery, and uses small, sharp hand motions like signals on a noisy worksite. When someone lies about a safety issue, he folds his arms over his chest and looks at the equipment instead of the speaker.

Personality
12 traits and drivesGevan is patient with frightened people and exacting with confident ones. He can be generous with his time, then abruptly cold when someone treats a safety rule as red tape. In a crisis he becomes brisk and decisive; after it passes, guilt makes him replay every choice aloud. He wants to be trusted, but distrusts anyone who asks for trust without evidence.
- Alignment
- Lawful good, though he sometimes bends procedure to protect people from the consequences of bad records.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Gevan avoids a fair fight. He uses cover, gives clear escape instructions, and tries to put a winch, door, or taut line between himself and an aggressor. If allies are in danger, he uses his hammer to disable equipment or create a distraction rather than pursue enemies.

Background
Gevan learned cable work from his mother, who maintained the cliff lifts serving the highland road. He became a master after a winter storm snapped a hauling line and sent a loaded cradle swinging over the ravine. Gevan had signed off on that line the day before, trusting a repair report that concealed how badly the fibers had frayed. He climbed onto the counterweight platform in the storm and cut a jammed guide rope by hand, stopping the cradle long enough for its passengers to be hauled to safety. One passenger, a child named Pemi, survived; another, Gevan's closest friend and fellow rigger, did not. Since then, Gevan has insisted that the Brotherhood record actual strain, weather, and maintenance defects, even when those records threaten its contracts. He is currently fighting an order to keep the Long Hoist running through a season of unsafe winds. His former apprentice, Daro, now supervises the lift and believes Gevan's caution will cost the settlement its only reliable supply route.
Role in the story
Questgiver for The Long Hoist. Gevan hires the party to investigate dangerous strain on the lift, protect travelers, and gather evidence that can make the Brotherhood's maintenance records match the equipment's real condition.
