Ysabet
Ysabet
At the table
Voice
Her voice carries a dry, warm resonance, supported by a measured breath and the practiced projection of a ruler accustomed to stone chambers. It is clear without being loud. When she grows angry, each consonant lands harder and her sentences come faster.
Her words are carefully placed and crisply articulated, shaped by centuries of issuing decrees in echoing stone halls. She draws breath low and steady, as though speaking is a physical act she has practiced until no effort shows. When angered, she sharpens consonants and increases her pace instead of lowering her voice.

How to play them
Offer courtesy and material comfort first, then discover what the visitors want and what they can be made to owe. Ysabet may bargain honestly when it serves her, but she rarely grants anything without securing a future claim. Open defiance prompts a measured, public consequence.
Goal
Keep Arcadia prosperous enough to endure and controlled enough never to threaten her again.
Motivation
She wants to turn a city she once feared into a legacy no rival can take from her.
Appearance
Ysabet is beautiful in the way of a portrait commissioned to outlast its subject: smooth, luminous skin, a composed mouth, and eyes that hold attention a fraction too long. She takes up space without seeming to hurry, letting courtiers move around her as if the room itself has learned her rank. Her white hair is combed into a precise, glossy sweep, and gold pins catch candlelight with every turn of her head. Close by, her perfume smells of bitter orange and hot metal; her voice leaves a dry, warm pressure in the ear. Unexpectedly, she keeps a tiny, mud-stained clay bird on her writing desk, its crude beak chipped from a child’s hand.
Clothing
White silk and layered ivory brocade edged in gold thread, a high collar, a sunburst diadem, and soft gold slippers. Her jewelry is heirloom work, each piece discreetly engraved with the name of a district that owes her.
Body language
She stands close enough to make people notice the hem of her gown, then holds still until they decide whether to retreat. Her hands arrange objects into exact lines while she listens. When amused, she inclines her head as if granting a small piece of land.

Background
Ysabet inherited Arcadia’s throne after a fever took her mother and two elder cousins in quick succession. At first, the city’s factions treated the young ruler as a figurehead. She answered by making the treasury pay for public fountains and grain stores, then quietly tying every major household to her through loans, licenses, and favors. A rebellion in her forty-third year ended at the Salt Gate, where she chose to collapse a district’s aqueduct rather than let insurgents reach the palace. The thirst that followed broke the uprising and changed her: she came to believe mercy without control was merely another name for surrender. She now rules from the sunlit Hall of Measures, collecting rare art and exacting obedience with the same patience. Her eldest adviser, Tarek, helped her survive that rebellion and has lately begun resisting her orders. Her younger sister’s daughter, Ketti, is popular among the city’s laborers and increasingly hard to dismiss. Arcadia’s fountains still run, but the old aqueduct is failing, and Ysabet is concealing the cost of its repair.
