Sergeant Oren Pell
Sergeant Oren Pell
At the table
Voice
His voice has a dry, slightly rasping edge from years of calling over wind, hooves, and river noise. He projects from his chest without shouting unless he must, and clips the ends of instructions as if making room for the next one.
Oren speaks in workmanlike phrases shaped by years of giving directions over wagon noise and rushing water. He names landmarks, distances, and tasks, and often repeats the important part once for anyone at the back of a crowd. His jokes are dry and usually aimed at himself.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Oren welcomes useful witnesses and asks them to separate what they saw from what they suspect. He offers practical help and clear assignments, but resists pressure to name a culprit before the evidence is checked. If approached respectfully, he shares that he saw movement near the tree line; if accused of a cover-up, he becomes blunt and insists the crossing must remain safe first.
Goal
Keep Silverford Crossing open, protect travelers, and establish what happened at the broken wagon without turning suspicion into a public feud.
Motivation
Protect ordinary travelers from becoming collateral in disputes between officials, merchants, and local families.
Appearance
Oren has a weather-beaten face, a blunt jaw, and broad, slightly crowded front teeth that show whenever he chews or laughs. His mustache is trimmed with almost fussy precision, but the rest of his hair is hacked short with a knife and sticks up in stubborn tufts. He stands squarely, feet set as if bracing against a river current, and turns his whole body to address people rather than craning his neck. His unexpected detail is a bright, carefully embroidered patch of tiny red berries on the inside of his otherwise regulation cloak, a private mending job he refuses to hide.
Clothing
A weather-darkened guard's coat over a quilted gambeson, river mud dried at the hems, practical gloves, a plain iron badge, and a regulation cloak patched inside with red berry embroidery
Body language
He plants his boots wide when anyone raises their voice, rubs his thumb along the worn edge of his belt buckle while listening, and points with an open hand rather than a finger. When troubled, he watches the road behind the speaker.

AC 16 · HP 18 · 30 ft.Oren tries to stop violence before it spreads. He uses Clear the Road to move civilians out of danger, takes cover near wagons or stonework, and focuses attacks on whoever threatens the crossing or directs the ambush. He will call for surrender and offer a safe route away, but fights hard if someone targets a bystander.

Background
Oren has spent twenty-three years keeping Silverford Crossing passable through floods, feuds, and bad harvests. Before he wore a sergeant's braid, he hauled a grain cart for his mother and learned to read a road by its ruts. During the spring flood of his ninth year on duty, a panicked crowd shoved toward a failing footbridge. Oren ordered the bridge closed, then climbed into the torrent to pull two children from the water. One survived; the other did not. Since then he has treated panic as a danger to be managed, not a failing to be punished. His partner, Tilda Kett, repairs the crossing's warning bell and argues that he takes too much responsibility onto himself. His younger brother, Gorm Pell, drives wagons and believes the guard should be less cautious about tolls. Now a wrecked wagon lies near the crossing, its cargo scattered and its driver missing. Oren saw movement in the tree line before the attack, but cannot yet say whether the assailants were raiders, desperate locals, or someone trying to frame the road wardens. He must keep traffic moving without letting rumor turn the crossing into a barricade.
