Umeishi
Umeishi
At the table
Voice
A clear, lightly rasped voice shaped by years of projecting over drums and crowded rooms. The rasp comes from dry stage smoke and long performances, not age. When tired, they speak in short, direct phrases; when performing, their timing becomes crisp and their consonants snap like fan ribs.
Their words are cleanly articulated, with the clipped precision of someone who learned to make themself understood over music and applause. They use stage patter when they need to steer a conversation, but their private speech is brisk and full of practical details.

How to play them
Treat Umeishi as an adult with agency, not as a spectacle or a prize. Ask before touching their jewelry, collar, or chain. They respond best to practical offers, clear choices, and respect for their plans. Promises of rescue without details make them wary.
Goal
Secure the debt records and a safe route out of Sedgehook, then return to Reedcut if doing so will not endanger the people who helped them.
Motivation
To turn survival into collective freedom without making another person pay the price for their choices.
Appearance
Umeishi carries themself with a dancer's deliberate balance, weight shifting silently from bare heel to toe. Their lean, feminine figure and androgynous face are framed by a narrow jaw, high cheekbones, and a small, amused mouth that rarely gives away the whole thought. Their sun-warmed olive skin is polished smooth with scented oil, but the soles of their feet are tough and darkened from years on rough boards. They groom obsessively: every strand of dark hair is combed into a heavy braid threaded with tiny gold rings. Thick gold armbands, thighbands, bracelets, anklets, and earrings catch the light with each measured movement. A thin, jewel-fringed dancer's loincloth and a fitted collar complete the stage costume. A heavy chain runs from the collar to a ring at the side of the stage; Umeishi keeps its slack gathered in one hand. They leave the impression of someone making grace out of a room designed to deny them choice.
Clothing
A thin, jewel-fringed dancer's loincloth, fitted stage collar, and many heavy gold ornaments: broad armbands, thighbands, bracelets, anklets, and earrings. Their performance clothing is chosen by the house and is not an invitation or sign of consent.
Body language
Keeps their shoulders relaxed and chin lifted when watched, turning every movement into part of the performance. In private, they rub the collar's edge with a thumb, stand close to walls, and angle their body so the chain cannot catch their ankles.

Background
Umeishi grew up among the cedar terraces of the elven settlement called Reedcut, where their mother dyed cloth and their father repaired irrigation gates. At seventeen, a failed harvest left the family owing labor to a human factor who controlled the road tolls. Umeishi was taken to the port town of Sedgehook and sold into an entertainment house. Their first years there taught them to read a crowd, keep time, and hide a plan behind a smile. The formative turn came during a fire in the house: Umeishi could have fled through a service passage but went back for a younger performer, Tessa, and was recaptured. Since then, they have treated escape as something to build carefully with other people, not a private dash for freedom. Their current master, Hadrik, presents the collar and chain as theater, but keeps the key and the contracts real. Umeishi quietly passes food and messages to other bound workers and is searching for a way to expose the debt records that keep them trapped. Their parents believe they are dead; Tessa, now a seamstress nearby, is their closest ally and their sharpest reminder that courage can cost others dearly.
Role in the story
A skilled, guarded ally who can guide the party through Sedgehook's entertainment district, connect them to other exploited workers, and reveal the machinery of a local debt racket. Their freedom is their own goal, not a prize for the party to claim.
