At the table

“The ground is firm, unless the rain has been heavier upriver.”
From how they speak

Voice

Rakhsh's voice has a dry, faintly rasping edge, shaped by a throat built for clipped calls across rain and brush. He speaks with measured diction when charting a route, pausing to check distances in his head. When anxious, his questions arrive in quick little bursts; when excited, he rattles off landmarks with the brisk precision of someone afraid the details will escape him.

His voice has a dry, faintly rasping edge, shaped by a throat built for clipped calls across rain and brush. He speaks in careful, complete phrases when describing routes, with small pauses to check distances in his head. Nervousness makes him front-load questions and qualify every claim; excitement speeds him up until he is listing landmarks faster than anyone can mark them down.

Speech patterns

Opens questions with, "If you have a moment, could I ask how you handled..."
Adds careful qualifications when describing a route: "The ground is firm, unless the rain has been heavier upriver."
Asks for advice earnestly, then checks whether he understood by repeating the practical steps.
When he is excited about a discovery, his words tumble out in measured distances and landmark names.
Apologizes quickly for taking up time, even when no one has suggested he is a burden.

How to play them

Meet his questions with practical advice and he will quickly become helpful and loyal. Give him a task with clear stakes and he will take it seriously, though he may ask for confirmation before acting. Treat his maps as valuable work rather than childish sketches to earn his trust. If confronted about his suspicions, he will share what he knows but needs evidence before accusing anyone by name.

Goal

Earn the trust to lead his own survey expedition and publish a reliable route through the monster-haunted wood, including the ridge path the patron's chart omits.

Motivation

He wants to become the sort of mapmaker whose work gets people home, while proving that his fear and inexperience do not make him a liability.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Rakhsh is a narrow, long-limbed Satarre whose lime-green scales have the slick, vivid sheen of wet leaves, broken by teal markings that branch from his temples down his throat and ribs like a map of streams. Short, rough spine-scales ridge his back and rasp audibly against his pack when he turns. His teal eyes are bright and piercing, always measuring distances. His jaw is slim but crowded with small, triangular teeth; when he eats, he carefully sorts every bite into neat, tiny pieces, and when he laughs his whole jaw opens in a startling, toothy flash. He walks with a cautious forward lean, placing each foot as if testing a line on paper. Unexpectedly, he keeps his claws buffed and his scales oiled with scented citrus balm, a precise grooming ritual at odds with his mud-splashed boots.

Clothing

A moss-brown travel coat split along the back to accommodate his spine-scales, a teal scarf tied close against rain, fingerless mapmaker's gloves, and boots patched with mismatched leather. His belt holds a waxed map tube and little measuring tools.

Body language

He holds his shoulders slightly hunched so his back-spines do not catch on doorframes, and often angles his head to line up a distant landmark with an imagined route. His claws hover over his map when he is thinking. When challenged, he starts to nod before he has understood the whole question, then catches himself and asks for it again.

Teal markings branch over lime-green scales in patterns that look like streams on a chart.
His bright teal gaze repeatedly aligns people and objects with distant landmarks.
His crowded triangular teeth show whenever he eats or laughs.
He buffs his claws and oils his scales with citrus balm despite dressing like a perpetually muddy field worker.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Rakhsh is earnest and eager to prove himself, yet each new responsibility makes him wonder if he has mistaken enthusiasm for competence. He asks veteran adventurers for advice with genuine curiosity, but can become stubbornly self-reliant when he thinks he has already disappointed them. Among strangers he is tentative and overprepared; when someone is hurt or lost, he becomes direct, practical, and surprisingly difficult to move from the task. He is proud of his maps, though he blushes when praised.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

He taps a quick rhythm on his thigh to count paces, even when standing still indoors.
He labels the blank margins of his own maps with tiny weather notes and then forgets that other people cannot read his shorthand.
He turns a cup so its handle points toward the nearest door, as if aligning it with an escape route.
He chews each bite into small, orderly pieces and stacks crumbs into a neat line.
He rubs citrus balm into his claws before bed, even after the roughest day in the field.

Habits

Asks experienced travelers how they read weather, tracks, and dangerous terrain, then writes the answers down exactly.
In unfamiliar places, he pauses at intersections to sketch a thumbnail-sized map before choosing a direction.
When nervous, he offers to do practical tasks such as checking a strap or measuring a pace.
When someone is in danger, hesitation gives way to startlingly decisive movement.
After a mistake, he tries to repair the harm first and explain himself afterward.

Traits · 4

He assumes experienced travelers know something he can learn and asks them how they make decisions.
He checks the details twice when calm, but acts quickly when someone is in immediate danger.
He is proud of his work and secretly hopes someone will notice its quality without being asked.
He tries to be considerate, yet his eagerness sometimes makes him talk through another person's answer.

Flaws · 3

He mistakes asking for guidance for proof that he is not ready, and can over-apologize for needing help.
He is slow to challenge an authority figure even when he suspects their instructions are dangerous.
He can become so focused on correcting a map that he overlooks the people waiting for him to finish.

Fears · 3

Being responsible for another person's death because he trusted an incomplete map.
Returning home with nothing useful to show for the risks he has taken.
Discovering that his aunt's death could have been prevented by a better route.

Wants and needs · 4

He wants to be trusted with an expedition of his own.
He needs a safe opportunity to verify the ridge route and establish who altered the chart.
He wants reassurance that seeking advice is a form of learning, not evidence of failure.
He needs to decide whether loyalty to his mentor means keeping quiet or bringing the truth into the open.

Combat

AC 14 · HP 18 · 30 ft.

Rakhsh prefers to begin at range, mark the most dangerous visible foe with hunter's mark, and use cover while shooting. He watches for safe paths and tries to draw enemies into narrow approaches where allies can hold them. If cornered, he uses a shortsword and looks for an opening to disengage rather than fighting to the finish. He saves goodberry for an emergency or for helping an injured companion after danger passes.

Custom Satarre trait. Scale-Born Wayfinder. Rakhsh can recall the direction and approximate distance of a place he has personally mapped, provided he is on the same plane of existence.
Custom Satarre trait. Spine-Braced. His coarse back-spines can snag cloth or brush; he has advantage on checks to resist being forcibly dragged through dense undergrowth.
Ranger class feature. Favored Enemy. Rakhsh has studied monstrosities and can recall information about them with unusual precision.
Ranger class feature. Natural Explorer. He is most at home in forests, where he is adept at tracking, navigating, and noticing signs of travel.
Fighting Style. Archery. Rakhsh gains a bonus to attack rolls he makes with ranged weapons.
Spellcasting. Rakhsh is a 2nd-level ranger with two 1st-level spell slots and two ranger spells known.

Spells

Hunter's Mark (level 1, divination). A marked quarry takes an extra force damage from Rakhsh's weapon hits, and he has advantage on Wisdom (Perception or Survival) checks to find it. Concentration, up to 1 hour.
Goodberry (level 1, transmutation). Creates up to ten berries that each restore 1 hit point when eaten and nourish a creature for a day. The berries expire after 24 hours.

Actions

Shortsword. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 () piercing damage. Rakhsh carries two shortswords and can make one attack with each when using two-weapon fighting, but he does not add his ability modifier to the damage of the second attack.
Longbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 150/600 ft., one target. Hit: 7 () piercing damage. The attack bonus includes his Archery fighting style.
Shortbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 80/320 ft., one target. Hit: 6 () piercing damage.
Cast Hunter's Mark. Rakhsh marks one creature he can see within 90 feet as his quarry. Until the spell ends, he deals an extra force damage whenever he hits it with a weapon attack, and he has advantage on Wisdom (Perception or Survival) checks to find it. The mark lasts up to 1 hour with concentration, or until the target drops to 0 hit points. This uses a 1st-level spell slot.
Cast Goodberry. Rakhsh produces up to ten berries from a sprig of thorny leaves. A creature can use its action to eat one berry, regaining 1 hit point; a berry provides enough nourishment for one day. The berries lose their potency after 24 hours. This uses a 1st-level spell slot.

Reactions

Slip Along the Mark. When a creature Rakhsh can see attacks him, he can move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks from that creature, provided he ends this movement in cover or difficult terrain. Custom Satarre feature; once per short or long rest.

Background

Rakhsh grew up copying road marks and river turns for his aunt, a surveyor who believed a bad map could kill more people than a bad sword. He apprenticed to the mapmaker Sseth after a spring flood erased the old ford near his home. During the rescue, Rakhsh followed a half-finished sketch he had drawn himself and led three stranded travelers to high ground, but his aunt was swept away before he could return for her. Since then, he has treated every map as a promise to someone who might need a way home. He now works for the itinerant mapmaking concern called Still Above Water, a name kept after a disastrous flood camp that outsiders mistakenly think refers to a boast. Its senior cartographer, Keth, praises Rakhsh's accuracy but will not yet trust him with an expedition alone. Rakhsh writes regularly to his younger cousin, Thesh, who wants him to come home and stop risking himself for strangers. His present problem is that a patron's route chart leaves out a safe ridge path through a monster-haunted wood; he suspects the omission is deliberate, but cannot prove who altered the copy.

Role in the story

A nervous but capable guide and apprentice mapmaker whose route knowledge can make wilderness travel safer. His missing ridge path ties the party to a quiet dispute over altered maps, while his need for advice offers experienced characters a chance to mentor him. He can become a dependable ally if they help him investigate without taking over his work.
