Nereo
Nereo
At the table
Voice
A dry, breath-edged rasp with a faint whistle on hard consonants, as though every sentence has to pass through cold air. Before he speaks there is a small clicking intake through his teeth. When Richard's personality pushes forward, the same voice grows more animated and plainly young; when Nereo takes command, the words become measured and weather-worn rather than louder.
His words have the dry rasp of someone who has spent too long speaking over open wind. He shapes place-names carefully, as if testing them against an old map, and clips the ends of sentences when urgency takes hold. When Richard pushes back, Nereo's speech briefly picks up Richard's quicker, more contemporary rhythm.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer useful warnings and keen observations, but do not pretend to know more than he remembers. Treat Richard as a distinct person, not merely a vessel. Nereo responds to honest questions about the past and to practical help in tracing the father; he becomes defensive if someone assumes that vengeance and justice are the same.
Goal
Find Richard's blood father in Scandinavia, recover the memory behind his vow, and pursue a form of justice that does not erase Richard's right to choose.
Motivation
Restore balance to lands he believes were grievously wronged, while protecting the human life his bargain created.
Appearance
Richard's lean young body moves with a watchful, predatory economy, as if every step has already measured the nearest escape route. The spirit's presence gathers around him in ragged suggestions of broad wings: not feathers exactly, but overlapping strips of wind-dark air that vanish when directly stared at. His borrowed blue eyes catch light with the hard, distant gleam of ice under shallow water. He smells unmistakably of rain on dry earth and old feathers; he knows it, and claims it is the weather's fault. Before he speaks, he takes one dry, clicking breath through his teeth, like a beak testing the wind. People remember the sense that the sky has leaned down to look at them.
Clothing
A weather-beaten travel coat patched at the elbows, close-fitting trousers, soft-soled boots, and a faded scarf Richard insists on keeping. Nereo dislikes anything that restricts his shoulders and leaves the coat open even in cold wind.
Body language
He keeps his chin slightly forward and his shoulders loose, as if balancing against a current no one else can feel. His gaze makes quick, exact stops on exits, hands, and the horizon. When Richard is near the surface, his posture softens and his hands fidget; when Nereo takes control, he becomes unnervingly still before moving in a sudden straight line.

Combat
AC 14 · HP 45 · 30 ft.Nereo fights as a hunter, not a soldier. He looks for height, open ground, and a clear retreat, using Windstep to evade and Gale Wing to separate attackers. He strikes isolated enemies with Spectral Talon and saves Forked Sky for an urgent threat or a target who seems tied to his forgotten grievance. He avoids killing bystanders, but his certainty about Richard's father can overwhelm his usual restraint.

Background
Nereo remembers the eastern coastline before the old communities there were broken and scattered, though the details come in gusts rather than a continuous history. He once belonged to the open sky, traveling above territories that humans knew by their own names and obligations. When those homes and the people who tended them were taken, he lost both his resting places and the clear purpose that had kept him aloft. Years later, he found Richard Jones dying as a boy. Nereo offered to return him to life, trading away his raptor eyes for Richard's blue human eyes. The bargain saved Richard, but left the spirit dormant inside him. As Richard grew, Nereo began to surface in moments of danger, borrowing the boy's actions and voice. Now, at eighteen, Richard and the spirit share a body uneasily. Nereo knows Richard's blood father must die, and suspects that the answer lies in Scandinavia, but cannot remember the crime that bound him to this hunt. He also believes justice is owed for wrongs done to the land from Alaska to Florida. His immediate problem is that Richard wants a life of his own, while Nereo's half-remembered duty keeps steering them toward violence.
Role in the story
A morally complicated guide and potential ally whose body is shared by an eighteen-year-old and an ancient spirit. His search for Richard's father can draw the party toward Scandinavia, while his missing memories raise questions about what justice means when its witness cannot recall the crime.
“He once belonged to the open sky, traveling above territories that humans knew by their own names and obligations.”
- Faction
- No current faction. Nereo's loyalties belong to the lost homes and living communities he believes have suffered injustice, but he does not presume their consent or authority.
