At the table

Voice

A weather-worn voice with a little rasp from cold air and long miles; consonants land cleanly, like she is making sure a listener can quote her correctly. When tired, her breath catches before sentences, but she keeps speaking at the same practical pace.

Her speech is plain and orderly, shaped by years of giving route reports and witness accounts. She names people before pronouns when details matter, and marks uncertainty aloud rather than smoothing it over. Her humor arrives dry and sudden, often aimed at bad weather or impractical plans.

Speech patterns

Introduces claims with where she was standing and what she could actually see.
Uses short, direct sentences when danger is near, then gives precise details once safe.
Says 'I can witness to that' when someone needs their account believed.
Avoids grand religious phrasing, preferring plain vows and practical promises.

How to play them

Halwen responds best to clear questions, visible intentions, and practical offers of help. She asks who will witness a promise and where the crystal will be kept. Earn her trust by protecting others as well as the cargo; pressuring her to abandon the crystal makes her guarded, not compliant.

Goal

Deliver the radiant crystal safely to the Temple of First Light and make sure the events at Ember Pass are accurately recorded.

Motivation

To make sure her work protects living people rather than merely satisfying a chain of authority.

Appearance

Sister Halwen has a weather-browned face, a blunt chin, and a patient, watchful expression that can turn brisk as a snapped thread. Her dark hair is twisted into a practical coil beneath a linen wrap, with flyaways caught in the wool at her temples. She moves with a courier's economy: shoulders forward on the road, feet placed carefully even on temple flagstones. A tiny clay bird, polished smooth by years of thumb-rubbing, hangs at her throat; its beak is worn almost flat. Unexpectedly, she carries a tiny folding paper theatre and can make its cutout figures dance for restless children.

Clothing

A sun-faded russet travelling habit under a patched grey wool cloak, practical boots, and a broad linen head wrap. Her sleeves are tied back with cord for work. A temple token is sewn inside the cloak rather than displayed openly.

Body language

She stands squarely when giving testimony and keeps her hands visible. While listening, one thumb travels repeatedly over the flattened beak of her clay bird. In a crowd, she angles her body so the crystal's satchel stays behind her hip and away from reaching hands.

Distinguishing features

A clay bird pendant whose beak has been polished almost flat by her thumb.
A tiny folding paper theatre tucked into her inner pocket, an unlikely keepsake for a temple courier.
Her careful habit of checking a parcel's knots, seals, and weight in the same sequence every time.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Halwen is cautious with facts but generous with people. She gives strangers the benefit of a small doubt, then tests their promises carefully. In danger she grows brisk and commanding; after danger passes she can be tender, even silly, especially with children. She wants to believe the temple's work is just, but resents being told that obedience and goodness are the same thing.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Taps every parcel twice with one knuckle, then once with the back of her thumb.
Names the weather under her breath as if entering it into a record.
Turns cups so their handles face the nearest person before sitting down.
When she cannot sleep, silently rehearses the order of places on her route.
Makes her paper figures bow to one another before packing them away.

Habits

Counts doorways, bridges, and likely exits whenever she enters a new place.
Checks the crystal's wrappings after every abrupt stop, even when someone else has just checked them.
When exhausted, becomes practical and unexpectedly funny; when frightened, becomes formal and recites facts.
Offers children paper-theatre figures while adults argue, using the distraction to listen closely.

Combat

AC 10 · HP 7 · 30 ft.

Halwen is not trained for battle. She retreats toward cover, puts obstacles between herself and attackers, and protects the crystal rather than pursuing enemies. If cornered, she uses her staff to make space and calls for help. She will not abandon an injured companion unless doing so is the only way to keep the crystal from being seized.

Courier's Roadcraft. Sister Halwen has advantage on checks to keep a route, identify safe shelter, or protect a small object while traveling. This is a custom feature, not a formal class ability.
Witness's Recall. After witnessing an event, she can give a careful, chronological account of what she saw, though fear and haste may color her interpretation.

Actions

Walking Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage.
Stand and See. Halwen presents her temple seal and calls for witnesses to hold their ground. One creature within 10 feet that can hear her may use its reaction to move up to 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. Custom nonmagical action.

Reactions

Guard the Parcel. When a creature Halwen can see moves within 5 feet of the crystal's case, she can interpose her staff or body. The creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or have its movement reduced to 0 for the rest of the turn. This does not restrain it or prevent attacks.

Background

Halwen was raised among mill workers near Dawnvale, where her mother taught her to read by tracing letters in flour spilled across the table. She became a temple courier because she was quick, observant, and willing to walk in bad weather. Years ago, during a winter road collapse, she chose to carry a feverish child rather than the sealed message entrusted to her. The delay cost the temple a chance to evacuate a hamlet before the next slide. The survivors forgave her; she has never forgiven herself. Since then, she records every handoff and insists on a second witness. She is now carrying the radiant crystal to the Temple of First Light, where it is needed for preparations in Dawnvale. At Ember Pass, a siege has trapped her between her duty to deliver it and her duty to testify to what happened on the road. Her closest confidante is Nadi, a healer at the temple, who knows Halwen has begun sleeping in her boots. Halwen suspects that a local quartermaster has been diverting supplies, but has no proof.

Role in the story

A vulnerable but determined witness and the crystal's courier. She can provide the party with grounded details about the siege, evidence of possible supply diversion, and a personal stake in the crystal reaching Dawnvale.
