Krisztián Varga
At the table
“I saw the water move. I do not yet know why.”
Voice
A low, chest-deep voice with a slight rasp at the edges, more resonant than Krisztián expects when he speaks. His words are clear and measured, shaped by laboratory instructions, family conversations, and years spent asking how a historical account was recorded. He sometimes pauses after hearing himself, then continues without making a performance of it.
He speaks with precise, practical phrasing shaped by laboratory work and a history enthusiast's habit of distinguishing sources. His newly low voice has a rough, chest-deep resonance that startles him when he first hears it in a quiet room. He occasionally clears his throat before speaking, as though trying to find the old voice by habit. Anger makes his sentences shorter and more explicit, not softer.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Start with practical questions and listen for what the other person is afraid to say. He is patient with uncertainty and does not insist that anyone treat their transformation as a puzzle. He responds best to people who distinguish what they saw from what they believe. If someone mocks a friend's distress, his patience ends quickly.
Goal
Help the Seven stay safe and establish what caused their transformation without reducing their pain to a research problem.
Motivation
Preserve the trust and identity of the people around him while finding a testable explanation for what happened.
Appearance
A tall, broad-shouldered young man with a distinctly Swedish-looking cast to his features, pale skin, and ash-blond hair that lies in uneven, wind-ruffled layers. New beard growth shadows his jaw, while fine body hair shows at his cuffs. His clear grey eyes stay busy, measuring distances and noticing small inconsistencies. He moves with a careful, slightly self-conscious economy until threatened; then he seems to occupy more space, planting his feet like a stone post sunk deep in frozen ground. He smells faintly of hot-spring minerals, damp wool, and the clean, papery dust of old books, a combination he has not noticed. Unexpectedly for a sturdy laboratory assistant, he keeps a tiny pressed fern tucked inside his field notebook and worries that its brittle stem will break.
Clothing
Practical borrowed layers suited to damp Oregon weather: a wool shirt, weatherproof jacket, sturdy trousers, and boots that have seen hot-spring mud. He keeps adjusting cuffs that no longer fit his forearms and carries a pencil behind one ear.
Body language
When calm, he keeps his shoulders rounded slightly forward and rubs the edge of his notebook with his thumb. He looks at a person, then at the thing being discussed, as though checking both against the same account. Under pressure, he squares his shoulders, spreads his feet, and seems startlingly hard to move. Afterwards, he often looks embarrassed by how much space he took up.

Personality
16 traits and drivesSkeptical and methodical, but more compassionate than his first questions suggest. He prefers evidence to dramatic guesses, yet he knows a person is not a specimen. Around friends he can be wry and gently encouraging; when frightened, he becomes procedural. When angry, he grows startlingly direct and has to remind himself that the people around him are not obstacles to move.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 11 · 30 ft.Avoids fights when possible. If violence starts, he puts himself between danger and the less capable members of the group, uses his strength to shove or restrain, and retreats once others can get clear. He braces against forced movement when threatened. He is not a trained soldier and does not chase fleeing opponents.

Background
Krisztián grew up in western Massachusetts in a family whose stories of old places and ordinary lives fed his history habit. He became a laboratory assistant because he liked careful work: labeling samples, checking assumptions, and finding out what a result actually meant. During a visit with family in Oregon, he and his friends became part of the Seven at the Cold Ford, a displaced band of friends, mutual aid, and an accidental supernatural phenomenon. Krisztián remembers his former body and all the people and relationships attached to it. The first night after the change, unable to trust appearances, he spent hours identifying who was in each bed by asking questions only his friends could answer. At the hot springs, he helped the group treat their transformations as evidence to observe, while saying plainly that measurement could not make them painless. The Jotun blood in him is newly apparent: bitter cold barely troubles him, and fear can make him feel immovable. His increased hunger, strength, anger, facial hair, and unfamiliar attraction to women are not curiosities he can simply record and set aside. He still has family and friends back east who expect to hear from him, and family in Oregon caught up in the immediate aftermath. His friends rely on his patience, but he has no answer yet for whether the changes are temporary or what the phenomenon wants.
Role in the story
A grounded witness and cautious investigator among the Seven at the Cold Ford. He can help the party separate evidence from rumor, provide a compassionate counterweight to panic, and reveal how frightening it is to be treated as a mystery instead of a person.
