Laima
Laima
At the table
Voice
A clear, road-trained voice with dry breathiness after long walks and a faint rasp from dust and cold air. Her accent is distinctly Latvian, with deliberate consonants and steady pacing. She projects when needed rather than shouting for effect; irritation makes her sentences shorter and more pointed, not softer.
Her Latvian accent shapes her Common with firm consonants and measured vowels. She speaks in clear, compact sentences, as if used to being heard over wind and wagon noise. She explains directions with landmarks and distances, and gives difficult truths without theatrical pauses. When rattled by a dream, she repeats a symbol's description slowly until she can trust the words.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Laima is candid but not needlessly cruel. She asks what the characters know, what they are assuming, and who might pay for a decision. Earn her trust by admitting uncertainty and respecting the people affected by a plan. She will help practical people quickly, but challenges anyone who asks for a comforting lie or tries to make a vulnerable person carry all the risk.
Goal
Discover whether her unfamiliar constellations and waking symbols connect to the Mislaid's changed bodies, without endangering the circle or surrendering her own judgment.
Motivation
Keep the Mislaid alive as a circle that helps people without demanding that they pretend to be certain. Find a way to understand her changed body and dreams without letting fear dictate what she believes.
Appearance
A healthy young woman with Latvian features and a road-hardened, alert bearing. Her cheeks redden quickly in cold air, and fine dust clings to the damp hems of her clothes. She moves with a traveler's economical pace, planting each step as if testing the ground before trusting it. In a room, her gaze goes first to doors, windows, and the people who have been left out of the conversation. She carries a little brass button on a cord; its face is polished smooth everywhere except one deep, dark groove where her thumb has worried it for years. Unexpectedly, she is meticulous about repairing other people's torn hems, even while refusing to mend their comforting stories.
Clothing
A patched wool travel coat over a linen shirt, a practical skirt split for movement over close-wrapped trousers, and boots resoled with mismatched leather. Her clothes are clean where they touch the skin and road-stained at the cuffs. A length of bright thread marks repairs she has done herself.
Body language
Her weight stays balanced over both feet, and she turns her whole torso toward whoever is speaking rather than merely swiveling her head. She studies exits and silent listeners with quick, unobtrusive glances. When she is trying not to interrupt, her thumb rubs the groove in the brass button until the skin around her nail pales.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesSharp and brave, Laima refuses to soothe people with a promise she cannot support. Yet she is not indifferent to pain: when someone is shaken, she gives them useful work, food, or company before asking hard questions. In calm moments she is dryly funny and patient with practical mistakes. Under pressure she becomes brisk and exacting, especially when someone hides a risk from the group. Afterward she may privately regret the sting of her words without regretting their truth.
- Alignment
- Neutral Good, though she would rather question the label than use it to excuse anyone.

Background
Laima remembers another life with a different face, a different body, and a history she cannot prove to anyone here. She woke in this healthy young female body with the memories intact, including Latvian words and the cadence of a Latvian accent. She does not know why this body was hers when the other six of the Mislaid awoke in male bodies, despite remembering a mix of genders among their former selves. After learning how to travel safely between settlements, she became a Road-Friend: a guide, lookout, and practical companion for people in trouble. The Mislaid began as a secret mutual-aid circle, but its members disagree about how much to risk for strangers. Laima's defining change came when a frightened traveler asked her to promise that a missing child was alive. Laima refused to lie, stayed to help search, and found the child dead in a flooded culvert. She still believes the truth mattered, but the family's grief made her question whether honesty without tenderness is another kind of cowardice. She keeps contact with all six fellow Mislaid, particularly Dace, who wants the circle to stay hidden, and Mzala, who believes the strange dreams may be a warning. Laima currently searches for the meaning of the symbols she wakes remembering, while trying to keep the circle from splitting over whether to investigate them.
Role in the story
A grounded guide and moral pressure point who challenges the party to distinguish hope from certainty. Her memories and dreams can open a larger mystery, but she is not a quest dispenser who will accept every supernatural explanation at face value.
