Gautier
Gautier
At the table
Voice
A weathered, breath-efficient speaking voice, with a faint rasp from cold air and long climbs. He articulates clearly without sounding formal, and his French Alpine accent becomes more noticeable when tired. He does not lower his voice when angry; instead, his words grow shorter and his consonants more sharply set.
He speaks French with the rounded, clipped cadence of the French Alps, shaping words efficiently as though conserving breath on a climb. His sentences are measured but not ceremonious. He often answers a question with a narrower question, or names what he can offer before admitting what he cannot. When memories of his former life surface, an unfamiliar phrase slips out in a different rhythm.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Gautier offers practical help before asking personal questions. He listens without implying agreement, does not promise secrecy he cannot keep, and lets people set the pace of disclosure. If someone threatens a member of The Mislaid, he becomes direct and quietly obstructive rather than confrontational.
Goal
Find a trustworthy explanation for his changed body and strange blood without endangering The Mislaid or surrendering control of his life.
Motivation
To protect people who travel alone, learn what is happening to him, and remain the author of his own choices.
Appearance
A healthy young man with a weather-browned face, a straight nose, and dark hair that curls damply at the temples after a climb. His hands are wind-roughened, his stride economical, and he turns his whole body toward whoever is speaking, as if giving them the road's full width. A faint pale ring circles the edge of his left iris. He smells distinctly of crushed fennel and wool warmed by a hearth, a scent he assumes everyone carries after a day on the trail. His battered tin cup is always on him, its rim worn smooth at one particular spot where his thumb worries it. The unexpected detail: he keeps a tiny, carefully folded scrap of bright yellow silk tucked inside his boot, too fine and cheerful for his plain traveler’s kit.
Clothing
A patched brown wool coat, a faded blue neck cloth, a linen shirt, sturdy breeches, and well-maintained boots. His clothes are plain but repaired with neat, mismatched stitches. The yellow silk in his boot is the sole vivid exception.
Body language
He settles his weight evenly on both feet and gives speakers steady attention, but his thumb circles the worn place on his tin cup when he is uncertain. When the strange warmth begins, he flexes his fingers as though cold has stiffened them and glances toward the person whose emotion seems to have stirred it.

Background
Gautier came to himself in his present body beside a mule track above the French Alpine village of Moulins, carrying memories that did not belong to this young man: another body, another daily life, and the sound of a voice he can no longer produce. The first person to offer him shelter was Omi, a widowed muleteer who asked no questions until he had eaten. He repaid her by carrying messages between isolated travelers, and was eventually trusted as a Road-Friend and discreet observer among The Mislaid, a secret mutual-aid circle. He listens for people in danger and quietly connects them with food, shelter, or a safer route, careful not to promise more than he can deliver. His present trouble is the warmth that sometimes runs through his veins when another member feels intensely. The ring in his iris appeared after one such episode. Omi wants him to seek a physician; he fears being examined by anyone who might recognize that his memories do not fit his body. He is also trying to learn whether the former owner of this body is truly gone, or merely silent.
