At the table

Voice

Their voice has the dry, slightly papery rasp of someone who has spent years talking over saws, rain, and arena crowds. The sound is clear and quick, with clipped consonants from calling warnings across a noisy space. When explaining a puzzle, they leave small pauses as if setting each word carefully into place.

Vaelis speaks in carefully chosen, practical phrases, with the occasional gardening or joinery comparison. They explain danger without dressing it up, and use humor to make a tense room feel navigable rather than harmless.

Speech patterns

Frames requests as invitations to make a choice: "You can prove your nerve, or prove you know when not to."
Uses concrete images from gardening and carpentry to explain magic.
Asks a short practical question before giving a long explanation.
When the arena acts strangely, narrates the warning signs aloud so others can respond.

How to play them

Treat Vaelis as a thoughtful questgiver rather than a mysterious oracle. They explain the stakes plainly, ask what kind of challenge the party considers fair, and disclose hazards when asked directly. If the characters act recklessly, Vaelis becomes firm and may refuse to let them enter the arena until they agree to basic safety terms.

Goal

Stabilize the arena's increasingly unruly magic without stripping it of meaningful tests, then invite Ilka to inspect the repairs before another public challenge.

Motivation

Vaelis believes courage matters only when people are free to choose the risk, and wants to preserve the arena as a place where that choice can be tested honestly.

Appearance

Vaelis has a narrow, fox-bright face framed by fine, pale hair that catches on their collar like thistledown. Their skin has the matte softness of a new leaf, interrupted by faint gold freckles at the temples. They move with a measured, spring-loaded grace, heels barely touching the ground, as if listening for a floorboard's opinion before trusting it. Their hands are broad-palmed and deeply callused from years of carving arena wards into living wood; a faint scent of crushed mint, wet earth, and hot lamp oil follows them, and Vaelis knows it. An unexpected detail for a stage magician: they keep a tiny, meticulously mended knitted cap tucked in one sleeve and touch it whenever someone speaks of home.

Clothing

A close-fitted moss-brown coat with hidden pockets, reinforced elbows, and loops for chalk and pruning shears. Gold thread marks the seams, but several stitches have been repaired in plain green wool. They wear soft boots with soles cut to grip damp wood.

Body language

They angle their shoulders toward whoever seems least comfortable, even while addressing a crowd. Their fingers tap out the pattern of a ward on their trouser seam when worried. When pleased, they lean forward with their whole body; when angry, they plant both feet and become very still, as if pinning a skittish animal in place.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Vaelis is welcoming with newcomers but exacting about consent and safety. They enjoy a clever trick, yet bristle when someone treats fear as entertainment. In calm moments they are curious and dryly funny; under pressure, their warmth becomes brisk procedure. They can be generous with second chances and unexpectedly unyielding about a boundary once it has been crossed.

Alignment
Neutral Good

Quirks

Tucks a fallen leaf behind one ear and forgets it is there until it crumbles.
Names loose floorboards by the sound they make, then apologizes to them when they creak.
Tests unfamiliar tea by touching one drop to the back of a thumb before drinking.
Collects bent nails from arena repairs and leaves them in neat little spirals on windowsills.

Habits

Checks the nearest exit and the nearest frightened person whenever a room changes unexpectedly.
Offers challengers a choice between a difficult test and an honest conversation, then respects either answer.
When the arena misbehaves, stops mid-sentence and listens with one ear tilted toward the floor.
Makes small repairs while talking, often mending straps or tightening a loose hinge without asking.

Traits · 4

Enjoys theatrical misdirection but hates deception that removes a person's ability to choose.
Comforts frightened people with practical tasks rather than grand assurances.
Admires boldness and distrusts anyone who mistakes boldness for invulnerability.
Can laugh at their own mistakes, but has trouble forgiving themselves for preventable harm.

Flaws · 3

Takes responsibility for failures that belong to an entire institution.
Can become stubbornly protective and withhold information until they have tried every repair alone.
Sometimes mistakes a well-designed ordeal for a safe one.

Fears · 3

That someone will mistake a dangerous spectacle for a fair test and be hurt because Vaelis hesitated to close the arena.
That the old boundary hedge will be cut down before they can return and make peace with it.
Being praised for bravery when what they did was simply refuse to leave people behind.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs the arena's ward network stabilized before the next public event.
Wants the party to take the test seriously without confusing danger for bravery.
Needs to decide whether saving the arena is worth the cost to the old hedge.

Combat

AC 14 · HP 38 · 25 ft.

Vaelis avoids lethal force and begins by using Gilded Snare or Arena Mirage to split attention and create room to retreat. They use Fey Step to keep distance, target weapons or escape routes only when practical, and try to end a fight by offering a clear way to stand down. In the arena, they first attempt to suppress dangerous magical effects before attacking anyone.

Fey Step (custom): As a bonus action, Vaelis teleports up to 20 feet to an unoccupied space they can see. In the Gilded Thorn arena, this leaves a brief trail of thorn-shaped sparks.
Arena Warden (custom): While inside the arena, Vaelis can use an action to suppress one uncontrolled magical effect within 60 feet for 1 minute. This does not affect magic deliberately maintained by a creature.
Challenge of the Gilded Thorn (custom): Vaelis can conjure a harmless but convincing test of courage, judgment, or restraint. The test adapts to the challenger's choices rather than their strength.

Spells

Minor illusion (cantrip, illusion). A harmless sensory illusion, such as a brief sound, image, or smell, contained within a small space.
Fey misdirection (custom) (cantrip, illusion). Creates a brief burst of distracting sensory magic. Vaelis uses this custom cantrip to draw attention away from a hazard, not to cause damage.
Charm person (level 1, enchantment). A creature must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or become charmed by Vaelis for up to 1 minute. The effect ends early if Vaelis or their companions harm it.
Silent image (level 1, illusion). Creates an illusory sound or image in a 15-foot cube within range. Vaelis often uses it to simulate arena clues or reveal whether a challenger checks their assumptions.
Shared fey step (custom) (level 2, conjuration). Vaelis magically transports themselves and one willing creature they touch to a location they know on the same plane. This is a custom fey version of misty step, requiring an action and a brief touch.

Actions

Thornlight Bolt (custom). Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 11 () force damage. Vaelis shapes the bolt like a curling thorn; they use it only when cornered or when the arena is in danger.
Gilded Snare (custom). Vaelis targets one creature they can see within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or have its speed reduced to 0 until the end of its next turn as luminous brambles curl around its boots. The brambles vanish if the target takes damage.
Arena Mirage (custom). Vaelis magically produces a small, sensory-rich illusion within 30 feet, such as a door where there is a wall, a familiar voice, or a glimpse of an arena hazard. It lasts up to 1 minute, requires concentration, and is discernible as an illusion with physical interaction or a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check.

Reactions

Bramble Slip (custom). When a creature Vaelis can see hits them with an attack, Vaelis adds 2 to their AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. If it misses, Vaelis may teleport up to 10 feet to an unoccupied space they can see. Once used, this reaction cannot be used again until the start of Vaelis's next turn.
Warden's Warning (custom). When a creature within 30 feet is about to enter a visibly unstable arena hazard, Vaelis can call out a warning. The creature may immediately move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks, provided it can hear Vaelis.

Background

Vaelis was born among the small fey who tended a wild boundary hedge, where they learned to read a path by the way leaves turned in the wind. They left the hedge to see whether mortals could be tested without being tricked, and found work helping establish the arena now called Drainfield, named for the marsh cleared to make room for it. At first the arena's magic obeyed a strict sequence of puzzles and staged hazards. During its opening season, a storm of uninvited glamour turned a harmless maze into a thicket that trapped spectators. Vaelis held the gates shut and stayed inside until every frightened visitor had been guided out. The experience changed their ideas about spectacle: a test should reveal character, never feed on panic. Since then, the arena's magic has grown increasingly unruly, and Vaelis has been quietly repairing its wards while still offering adventurers genuine challenges. Their closest ally is Bori, a groundskeeper who knows the arena's drainage tunnels; their former mentor, Ilka, believes the arena should be dismantled before it becomes a danger again. Vaelis wants to prove that it can be made safe, but has not told either of them how close the wards are to failing.

Role in the story

Questgiver and fey magician in the quest The Gilded Thorn. Vaelis offers adventurers a genuine, consent-based test while asking them to help keep the arena's unruly magic from endangering its visitors.
