Sivra Vell
Sivra Vell
At the table
“Who signed? What was witnessed? Where is the second copy?”
Voice
Her voice has a dry, papery rasp from years of speaking over the rustle of shrouds and the scrape of archive drawers. Work has given her crisp consonants and a habit of taking a measured breath before names, as though making sure she has the right person. When angered, she speaks faster and more bluntly, not more softly.
Her sentences are built like clauses: precise, orderly, and often finished with a question that exposes what the other person left out. She uses the vocabulary of a funeral worker and a contract examiner, referring to both bodies and bargains as things that require careful handling.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begins by asking what the visitors want and what they are willing to promise. She is candid about risks and will share useful knowledge with people who respect consent and clear terms. She tests bluster with precise questions, but responds warmly to honest uncertainty. If someone is in danger, she helps first and argues about responsibility afterward.
Goal
Find who is falsifying the expiration clauses in archived demon contracts and stop the renewed bindings before they mature.
Motivation
To make necromancy answerable to the people it affects, living or dead, and to prove that power does not excuse careless promises.
Appearance
Sivra looks like a meticulous scholar who has spent years working in rooms where the dead are stored: a narrow, upright figure with a measured, almost soundless walk and the fixed attention of someone reading fine print at a distance. Her coat is too broad in the shoulders and has been let out and taken in repeatedly; its cuffs are patched with mismatched funeral-cloth. She wears a silver pocket watch on a ribbon and touches its case whenever a conversation turns to bargains. The watch is unexpectedly decorated with tiny, childish painted moths, its enamel worn smooth where her thumb passes. The impression she leaves is of an orderly mind living inside a body permanently braced for bad news.
Clothing
A charcoal wool coat with a poor shoulder fit, repeatedly mended cuffs, and deep inner pockets for papers. Beneath it she wears a high-collared cream shirt, a narrow belt of tools, and practical boots kept meticulously clean. Her silver watch on a ribbon is the one item she polishes obsessively.
Body language
Keeps her shoulders square and her hands close to her coat, as if protecting papers from a draft. When listening, she angles her head toward the speaker's hands rather than their face. Her thumb circles the pocket watch when she is weighing a risk; when she has made up her mind, the thumb becomes still.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesSivra is exacting about agreements but compassionate toward people caught in them. In a calm room she is dryly funny and patient; under pressure she becomes brisk, interrupting others to establish facts. She distrusts grand gestures and yet will take a frightening personal risk to keep a promise she considers valid. She can be both comforting and unnerving: she remembers a grieving person's favorite tea, then asks them to sign a statement confirming what they saw.

Background
Sivra was raised above her family's funeral-parlor in the river town of Sedgewick, where she learned to identify people by the sound of their relatives grieving downstairs. As a young assistant to the mortuary physician, she discovered that a supposedly peaceful corpse had been used as a vessel for an outsider. The entity was still bound to the body by a badly copied agreement, and the dead person's younger brother had been left terrified beside it. Sivra could not undo the binding by force. She found its expiration clause, read it aloud, and kept the family safe until dawn. That night changed her from a curious student into a strict believer that even the dead and the summoned deserve limits they can understand. She became a renowned necromantic consultant, famous for refusing any demon contract without a plainly stated end date. Her work has earned the wary respect of the ferrymen who bring her bodies, the irritation of ambitious occultists, and the loyalty of a former apprentice who now challenges her methods. She currently struggles to prove that a series of supposedly expired contracts were secretly renewed by someone altering the copies after signing.
Role in the story
A knowledgeable, principled but imperfect expert who can expose the rules behind supernatural bargains. Sivra may become a valuable ally, a demanding investigator, or the person whose hidden exception gives the villains their opening.
