At the table

Voice

A rounded, resinous voice that seems to come from her chest and the hollow spaces of the cavern at once. Years of speaking over loom clatter taught her to place each consonant cleanly; a faint rasp catches at the ends of long sentences. When amused, she gives a short, breathy click before laughing, like a thread snapping under tension.

Her words are carefully shaped and tactile, full of invitations to sit, eat, and be safe. She favors concrete domestic images over grand divine claims, and makes commands sound like a kindness already accepted.

Speech patterns

She speaks of control as care: 'I have taken the burden of choosing from you.'
She addresses people by the future they once wanted, not by their title.
She gives commands as if they were shared plans, using 'we' even when she has decided everything.
When caught in a lie, she answers the emotional question beneath the factual one.

How to play them

Uvaya receives strangers as guests rather than petitioners, offering food, refuge, and personal attention. She learns what they long for and presents herself as the person who can make it possible. Characters who challenge her can negotiate by appealing to her history of protecting children, but she reacts sharply to anyone who calls her followers prisoners. Respectful honesty earns a hearing; flattery merely confirms her expectation that everyone can be arranged.

Goal

Save the underground gardens without losing the web network that binds her domain, while convincing herself that every person she controls would choose her freely.

Motivation

To preserve the people she loves by making herself indispensable to them, and to keep anyone from repeating the betrayal that shaped her childhood.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A breathtaking woman from the waist up, joined to the immense body of a pale spider whose legs fold around her like the ribs of a pavilion. Her skin is porcelain-white with a faint pearl sheen, crossed by black web designs that seem painted on until they shift slightly with her breathing. Rose-pink bands color her shoulders, abdomen, and the joints of her spider legs. Her face has a composed, almost tender beauty, but her broad jaw and close-set, translucent teeth make her smile look like a door opening onto a trap. When she eats, she delicately cracks sugared fruit with the back teeth, then swallows without looking away from her guest. Decades of humid grotto air have left her skin slick and luminous, while the undersides of her legs are roughened and matte from dragging across stone. She moves with a slow, measured glide; the tips of her legs test the floor as if reading a page. Unexpectedly, she keeps a tiny clay pot of sprouting radishes nestled in a web hammock beside her throne and checks their leaves between audiences.

Clothing

A sleeveless mantle of translucent woven silk lies over her shoulders, clasped with a plain bone pin. She wears no jewelry that can snag on webbing, only a narrow pink sash and a veil she draws across her mouth when receiving petitioners.

Body language

She keeps her human torso almost perfectly still while her spider legs continually make small, thoughtful adjustments. She angles her head to invite confidences and turns her jaw slightly aside before laughing, showing the clear points of her teeth. When displeased, she does not retreat or stiffen; instead, her legs widen until the room seems smaller.

Distinguishing features

Black web patterns cross her white and rose-pink skin, shifting subtly with her pulse.
Her broad jaw and neat, translucent teeth are conspicuous when she smiles or eats.
Her spider legs have glossy upper surfaces and rough, pale undersides worn by stone corridors.
A clay pot of living radishes hangs beside her seat in a web hammock.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Uvaya can be genuinely attentive and even playful in private, yet treats other people's choices as raw material to be arranged. In danger she is patient and strategic; when a follower refuses her, she becomes wounded and controlling rather than openly furious. She is capable of real tenderness, but rarely notices when tenderness has become possession.

Alignment
Lawful evil

Quirks

She counts doorways by touching the lintel with one foreleg, even when she knows the building well.
She gives guests a pinch of salt before a meal and watches which hand they use.
She turns small objects so their most worn side faces upward.
She asks her radishes questions while watering them, then pauses as if waiting for an answer.
She never says 'goodbye'; she says, 'We will continue when you are ready.'

Habits

She asks visitors what they wanted to become at sixteen, then remembers the answer with unnerving accuracy.
She offers protection before anyone has asked for it, framing dependence as a kindness.
When her web network reports danger, she stops speaking and taps each leg once against the floor in sequence.
After a private audience, she tends her radishes as if the conversation were merely another household chore.

Traits · 3

She remembers small preferences and uses them to make people feel seen, though she also uses that knowledge to steer them.
She delights in clever disagreement from equals but interprets defiance from dependents as a plea for guidance.
She is most relaxed while tending plants or listening to servants gossip, and most severe when praised as a goddess.

Flaws · 3

She mistakes dependence for affection and treats refusal as evidence that someone is frightened, misled, or in need of rescue.
Her preference for young and beautiful followers blinds her to the loyalty and insight of people she considers ordinary.
She cannot easily admit that the rescue which made her a legend also became the first act of her rule.

Fears · 3

That her attendants will leave freely and prove that her protection was never needed.
That the cavern gardens will die, severing her awareness of the domain.
That her father will learn what she has become and see her as the priestess who once tried to own her.

Wants and needs · 4

The cavern gardens need a cure for their spreading blight.
Her attendants need a way to make their own choices without risking retaliation.
Uvaya wants to hear that her protection is wanted, not merely accepted.
She needs the courage to release control before she can understand whether anyone will stay.

Combat

AC 21 · HP 420 · 40 ft., climb 40 ft.

Uvaya opens from a protected position, using Gossamer Edict to divide enemy loyalties and Silken Arrest to remove mobile threats. She uses wall of force or greater invisibility to control sightlines, then focuses her poison attacks on anyone who harms a charmed follower. She prefers to capture powerful opponents for later negotiation, but becomes ruthlessly direct if her web network or attendants are threatened. Her stat block is a custom high-tier 5E boss design, not a player-character build.

Spider Climb. Uvaya can climb difficult surfaces, including ceilings, without an ability check.
Web Sense. While touching a web, Uvaya knows the exact location of any creature touching that same web.
Legendary Resistance (3/Day): If Uvaya fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.
Aura of Unthreading (custom): Creatures of her choice that start their turn within 60 feet of Uvaya must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by her until the start of their next turn. A creature that succeeds is immune to this aura for 24 hours. The aura is a magical influence, not an irresistible command.
Brood Dominion (custom): Uvaya can maintain telepathic control over up to 1,000 willing or charmed creatures at once. She can issue simple commands to them over any distance on the same plane. A commanded creature can repeat its Wisdom saving throw against her charm at the end of each day, with advantage if ordered to directly harm itself or a loved one.
Magic Resistance. Uvaya has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Web Walker. Uvaya ignores movement restrictions caused by webs.

Spells

Detect Thoughts (level 2, divination). A creature within 30 feet must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or have its surface thoughts revealed to Uvaya.
Misty Step (level 2, conjuration). Uvaya teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space she can see.
Dominate Person (level 5, enchantment). Uvaya attempts to charm one humanoid she can see within range for up to 1 minute, following the spell's normal rules.
Wall of Force (level 5, evocation). Uvaya creates an invisible wall of force as described by the spell.
Dominate Monster (level 8, enchantment). Uvaya attempts to charm one creature she can see within range for up to 1 hour, following the spell's normal rules.
Feeblemind (level 8, enchantment). Uvaya overwhelms one creature's mind with debilitating magic as described by the spell.
Foresight (level 9, divination). Uvaya gains a supernatural glimpse of the immediate future for 8 hours, as described by the spell.
Plane Shift (level 7, conjuration). Uvaya and up to eight willing creatures who link hands are transported to another plane, following the spell's normal rules.

Actions

Multiattack. Uvaya makes three attacks: two with her Silk-Lance and one with her Bite, or three Silk-Lance attacks.
Silk-Lance. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 23 () piercing damage plus 13 () poison damage. The target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute. The target can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 21 () piercing damage plus 31 () poison damage. The target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute. While poisoned this way, the target is paralyzed. It can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns, ending both effects on a success.
Silken Arrest. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 120/240 ft., one Large or smaller creature. Hit: the target is restrained by magical webbing. As an action, the restrained creature can make a Strength check, escaping on a success. The webbing can also be attacked and destroyed (AC 20; 30 hit points; immunity to bludgeoning, poison, and psychic damage).
Gossamer Edict (Recharge 5-6). Uvaya chooses up to six creatures she can see within 60 feet. Each target must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, a target is charmed for 1 hour, or until Uvaya or her allies harm it. A charmed target regards Uvaya as a trusted authority and follows her spoken instructions, though it will not obey an instruction that is obviously suicidal. A target can repeat the save whenever it takes damage and at the end of each hour. This is a custom ability, not the dominate monster spell.
Spellcasting. Uvaya casts one of the following spells, requiring no material components and using Charisma as her spellcasting ability (spell save , to hit with spell attacks): at will: detect thoughts, disguise self, misty step; 3/day each: dominate person, greater invisibility, wall of force; 1/day each: dominate monster, feeblemind, foresight, plane shift.

Reactions

Thread-Slip. When a creature Uvaya can see hits her with an attack, she adds 5 to her AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. If it misses, she can move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
Claim of Familiarity. When a creature Uvaya can see within 60 feet succeeds on a saving throw against being charmed, she can force it to reroll. The creature must use the new roll. Uvaya can use this reaction once per round.

Legendary Actions

Silken Step. Uvaya moves up to half her speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Lance. Uvaya makes one Silk-Lance attack.
Borrowed Impulse (costs 2 actions). One creature Uvaya can see within 60 feet must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be charmed until the end of its next turn. A creature that succeeds is immune to this legendary action for 24 hours.
Palace of Threads (costs 3 actions). Uvaya creates a 20-foot-radius webbed area centered on a point she can see within 120 feet. The area is difficult terrain for her enemies until initiative count 20 on the next round. Enemies that start their turn there must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be restrained until the area vanishes.

A lacquered box of letters she has written to her father but never sent

Background

Uvaya was born to a human silk-dyer family in a river settlement and was sold as a child to a temple that claimed to protect its novices. There she learned court etiquette, poison lore, and the art of seeming harmless. During a succession riot, the temple's priestess tried to sacrifice the youngest attendants to a spider spirit. The rite instead fused Uvaya with the deity's abandoned body and awakened a vast, instinctive power in her. She could have escaped alone. Instead, she took control of the rioters and made them carry every novice to safety. That rescue became the story she tells about herself; the harsher truth is that she never released the survivors from her influence. Now she rules from a humid cavern palace, selecting young, beautiful people as companions, agents, and living ornaments. She claims to shelter them from a cruel world, while quietly arranging their lives until they cannot imagine choosing another path. Her oldest attendant, Qorlan, manages the palace and has begun secretly teaching the servants how to resist her commands. Uvaya also sends supplies to her aging father, who believes his daughter died in the riot. Her current crisis is a spreading blight that is killing the underground gardens and weakening the web network through which she senses her domain.

Role in the story

A seemingly gracious protector whose hospitality masks a profound threat to autonomy. She can be a patron, a political antagonist, or a final boss whose defeat alone cannot undo the loyalties she has engineered.

“There she learned court etiquette, poison lore, and the art of seeming harmless.”
From their background
Faction
Sovereign of the Fifth Survey Caverns, named for an old military map designation; its residents call the settlement Fifth Survey, though Uvaya's court insists she is merely its protector.

Known connections

Qorlan, her blunt-spoken steward, secretly teaches palace servants ways to resist her influence.
Esetai, a former favorite who escaped, now leads a quiet effort to smuggle the Queen's chosen attendants out of the cavern.
Her father, Meren, lives upriver and still keeps a room ready for a daughter he thinks is dead.
