Voice

His voice has a dry, rasped edge from salt air and years of shouting across a deck. It carries clearly without sounding polished, with a slight coastal lilt and a habit of clipping the ends of commands. His contempt is expressed through precise emphasis and a hard, level delivery, not a drop in volume.

He speaks in clipped working phrases shaped by years of calling orders over wind, rigging, and surf. His vocabulary is blunt but precise when a job is underway; off duty, dry humor and old sailor's sayings slip through. He rarely uses a person's name until he trusts them.

Speech patterns

Uses short, practical sentences when discussing danger or work.
Calls people by their job or the thing they are doing until they have earned his trust.
Uses shipboard comparisons on land, especially when criticizing someone's plan.
When someone asks about his hand, answers plainly and changes the subject to what they need.

How to play them

Leko respects competence, direct answers, and people who do not treat his missing fingers as an invitation to pry. He begins suspicious, offers practical terms rather than warm assurances, and becomes dependable once a bargain is kept. Bring him evidence about Efa or Olan and he will risk more than he admits; threaten his crew and he will stop negotiating.

Goal

Find Efa, learn what became of her after the mutiny, and expose the harbor magistrate's arrangement with the privateers without sacrificing his crew.

Motivation

Loyalty to the crew that became his family, guilt over the mutiny, and a stubborn need to know whether Efa is alive.

Appearance

A rugged, athletic human with weather-darkened skin, a squared jaw, and a neatly trimmed beard threaded with a few pale hairs. His short dark hair is crushed flat beneath a battered tricorn. He stands in a ready, balanced stance, weight slightly forward, cutlass angled to catch the light. His left hand has exactly three fingers: thumb, index, and middle, the other two lost long ago. The remaining fingers are thickened and rope-rough, and he grips tools with practiced economy. His expression holds a contemptuous curl, though his eyes continually measure exits and hands. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny sprig of mint tucked behind one hatband, replacing it whenever it dries.

Clothing

A loose, billowing white linen pirate shirt with an open lace-up collar; a battered tricorn; a black leather bandolier carrying three small throwing knives; a wide black leather belt with a large ornate silver buckle over a crimson sash; dark charcoal-grey rugged trousers tucked into knee-high black leather lacing boots with folded cuffs. His clothes are salt-stained, carefully mended, and worn for movement.

Body language

He holds his shoulders loose and his knees flexed, like a man expecting the deck to roll. His cutlass stays low until trouble is certain. When listening, he rubs the end of his left index finger against the seam of his thumb, a small motion that becomes quick and repetitive when he is cornered.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Leko is contemptuous of swagger and tender toward frightened deckhands, sometimes in the same breath. He makes cold calculations under pressure, then quietly spends his own share to keep a crew member fed. When relaxed, he is dryly funny and surprisingly patient; when someone threatens his people, his restraint snaps into direct, economical violence.

Alignment

Quirks

Tucks a fresh sprig of mint behind his hatband each morning, even before dangerous work.
Tests a table's stability with one knuckle before sitting, as though checking whether it will hold in a storm.
Counts his throwing knives by touch and always restarts if interrupted.
Leaves the first bite of a meal untouched until everyone at the table has been served.
When he hears a gull cry, he looks up even indoors, then pretends he did not.

Habits

Counts doors, windows, and armed people as soon as he enters a room.
When he is worried, he checks the three throwing knives in his bandolier in the same order, then starts over.
On deck he gives crisp, specific orders; ashore he acts as if he has all the time in the world.
He watches a person's hands more closely than their face, but will meet their gaze when he has made a decision.

He distrusts grand promises but remembers small acts of fairness for years.
He can be brutally pragmatic in a crisis, yet is incapable of abandoning someone who has earned his loyalty.
He uses contempt as armor when he feels uncertain, and humor when he is comfortable.
He prefers to be obeyed on deck but listens carefully when a crewmate challenges him in private.

Flaws · 3

He turns a personal promise into an obligation even when it endangers everyone around him.
His contemptuous manner makes honest negotiation harder than it needs to be.
He keeps his doubts private until they have become urgent problems.

Fears · 3

Finding out that Efa survived but believes he abandoned her.
Being forced to rely on his injured hand in a fight where failure would cost someone else their life.
The crew deciding his private search matters more to him than their safety.

Wants and needs · 4

A trustworthy lead on Efa's whereabouts.
A crew willing to tell him when his search is putting them in danger.
Proof of Olan's dealings with the privateers.
A chance to remember Efa without making every choice about guilt.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 44 · 30 ft.

He prefers to fight where footing is awkward for his enemies and useful to him: a narrow gangway, a stair, or a wet deck. He opens with thrown knives to make foes guard high, then closes with the cutlass. He uses Trip Attack against a dangerous melee opponent, Disarming Attack against an obvious spell focus or weapon, and Riposte when an enemy misses him. He spends Action Surge to finish a threat or protect a companion, not to show off.

Actions

Multiattack. Leko makes two attacks with his cutlass or two attacks with his light crossbow. Cutlass: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: slashing damage. Light crossbow: to hit, range 80/320 ft., one target. Hit: piercing damage.
Cutlass. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: slashing damage. Leko can expend a superiority die to use Disarming Attack, adding the die to damage and forcing the target to make a Strength save or drop one item it is holding.
Throwing Knife. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: piercing damage. Leko can draw and throw a knife as part of this attack.
Light Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 80/320 ft., one target. Hit: piercing damage.
Trip Attack. Leko expends a superiority die and makes one weapon attack. On a hit, he adds the die to the damage, and the target must succeed on a Strength save or fall prone.

Reactions

Riposte. When a creature Leko can see misses him with a melee attack, he expends a superiority die to make one melee weapon attack against that creature. On a hit, he adds the superiority die to the damage.

Background

Leko learned the sea on a cramped coastal trader, where he hauled wet rope and slept beside barrels that leaked brine. He joined Captain Efa's crew for better pay, then stayed because the captain treated him as a person rather than another pair of hands. During a mutiny at the reef-choked inlet locals call the Old Wren, Leko held a hatch against the attackers while Efa got the youngest deckhands into the launch. A snapped boarding blade took two fingers from his left hand. The mutiny failed, but the ship was lost and Efa vanished in the smoke and surf. Leko now commands the small, uneasy crew of the Gull's Teeth, a vessel named for the weed-choked shoal it shelters behind. His first mate, Neri, wants to sell their ship and disappear; Leko keeps risking their lives on rumors that Efa survived. He has recently learned that a harbor magistrate, Olan, is quietly selling the names of wanted sailors to the same privateers who hunted Efa.

Role in the story

A wary pirate captain who can become an ally, rival, or source of passage. His search for a missing captain draws the party into a struggle between sailors, privateers, and a corrupt harbor official.

“He joined Captain Efa's crew for better pay, then stayed because the captain treated him as a person rather than another pair of hands.”
From their background
Faction
Captain of the Gull's Teeth, an independent coastal crew. He has no formal allegiance to a pirate confederacy and distrusts anyone who claims to speak for all sailors.

Known connections

Neri, his first mate, is a sharp-eyed deckhand who wants to sell the Gull's Teeth and leave the coast before Leko's search gets them killed.
Efa, his former captain and closest friend, disappeared after the mutiny at the Old Wren. Leko still searches for proof she survived.
Olan, a harbor magistrate, has begun selling information about wanted sailors to privateers. Leko suspects Olan knows what happened to Efa.
