At the table

“Take the path that breathes with the tide.”
From how they speak

Voice

A breathy, salt-scraped voice with a little rasp from shouting over surf; her consonants hiss and catch, and she tends to push her words out in quick bursts like someone speaking between waves. When focused, she taps the beetle's key in time with her explanations.

Her speech is quick and practical, shaped by years of calling directions over surf and through echoing pilings. She clips the ends of sentences when excited, then carefully repeats the important part if someone looks lost. Harbor slang slips into her explanations, especially words for currents and water depth.

Speech patterns

Uses short, concrete questions when planning: 'Which gate? How deep? Who is watching?'
Gives directions with water and weather comparisons, such as 'Take the path that breathes with the tide.'
When embarrassed, changes the subject by pointing out a nearby practical problem.
Uses people's names often when trying to make them listen.

How to play them

Treat her as capable and ask what she has observed. She responds well to direct questions, useful tasks, and people who take the harbor families seriously. Do not promise safety you cannot guarantee; she notices evasions.

Goal

Get Oruvan's sluice gates repaired before the next spring tide floods the settlement.

Motivation

She wants the tide-channel families to be heard before their home is damaged beyond repair, and wants to prove that being young does not make her observations worthless.

Appearance

Misketh's peach-colored skin has a salt-polished sheen over her shoulders and a faint, fine roughness along her forearms from hauling reed baskets through tidal pools. Her long purple hair drifts in slow ribbons underwater, but on shore she binds it in a clumsy coil with eelgrass. Neon-pink eyes catch light like bright glass, and her long mermaid tail is a deep violet fading to translucent lilac at its broad, frayed-looking fin. She moves with quick, darting turns in water and awkward, determined scoots on land. Within a minute, most people notice the little brass wind-up beetle she wears on a cord: its paint is worn entirely away on the left side where her thumb rubs it when she is thinking.

Clothing

A sleeveless, patched vest of faded sailcloth, secured with shell toggles, and a waterproof pouch tied at her waist. Underwater she wears only the vest and pouch; on shore she borrows a canvas sling that supports her tail.

Body language

She leans toward whoever is speaking, chin tucked as if listening through water. In a tense moment her tail curls around her own waist like a shield. When excited, she drums two fingers against the brass beetle and forgets that she is doing it.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 7 · 5 ft. walking with tail sling; swim 30 ft.

In water, she darts between cover, uses her call to draw help, and targets weapons or hands with her padded staff. On land, she stays near water or an exit and throws shell-weights to distract pursuers. She retreats rather than fight to the death.

Background

Misketh was born in a tide-channel settlement built beneath the pilings of the human harbor of Oruvan, where her family gathered shellfish and repaired storm nets. At nine, a sudden spring surge broke the settlement's outer cages and swept her younger cousin, Temur, into a flooded drain. Misketh found a narrow passage through the pilings and pulled him free, but the current carried away their winter food stores. Since then, she has learned the harbor's hidden waterways and takes odd jobs guiding boats through submerged hazards. Her mother, Savaa, wants her to keep to safe shallows; her cousin Temur admires her recklessness and copies it badly. Lately, the harbor's new sluice gates have been trapping fish and choking the channels. Misketh has tried to persuade the surface workers to repair them, but she has not told her family that she has been sneaking into the machinery at night.

Role in the story

A young local guide whose knowledge of the harbor's underwater passages can help the party, while her investigation into the failing sluice gates draws them into a threat to her community.
