Voice

A bright, rounded voice with a faint dry rasp at the edges, like someone who has spent too many nights speaking into cold air. It carries easily without being loud. Before important words comes a small nasal intake, a habit from years of listening to the world's air as if it might disclose the shape of distant stars.

Her speech is clear and deliberate, with the clipped precision of someone who learned language by listening for a long time before having a mouth. She favors simple words for immense concepts and asks questions without disguising them as politeness. When excited, she talks faster and trips over ordinary idioms; when worried, she pauses to take her characteristic careful breath before saying what she has decided.

Speech patterns

Asks direct questions that adults consider rude, then waits as though the answer matters more than manners.
Uses ordinary words for enormous ideas: a galaxy is 'a lot of faraway neighbors.'
Calls people by the star or landmark they remind her of, then apologizes if they dislike the comparison.

How to play them

Treat Ivena as a person rather than a prophecy. She responds to honest questions, practical kindness, and invitations to help. Do not mistake her childlike appearance for childish understanding: she can be perceptive and patient, but she needs explanations of mortal consequences rather than assumptions that she knows them.

Goal

Find what is making stars vanish, learn whether her awakening caused it, and protect the people who first treated her as a person instead of a miracle.

Motivation

To prove that being newly divine does not make her responsible for every mystery in the heavens, while still refusing to abandon anyone who needs her.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Ivena looks like a small child someone has dressed for a journey that never ends. Her long purple hair is thick as velvet ribbon, falling in uneven waves to her calves and catching pinpricks of light even indoors. Her neon-pink eyes have no visible flecks or rings; when she looks at a star, its reflection hangs in them a heartbeat too long. Her skin has the soft, matte look of pale moonstone. She walks with a curious, lopsided shuffle, always leaning a little toward the nearest window or patch of open sky. Before she speaks, she takes a tiny, careful breath through her nose, as if checking whether the air contains a constellation. People tend to remember that pause before they remember her face.

Clothing

A plum-colored traveling coat with oversized sleeves, patched at the elbows with scraps of sailcloth. Beneath it she wears a cream tunic, soft boots, and a belt carrying a brass star chart that is too complicated for her hands. The coat's inside seams are embroidered with a map of constellations that no longer exist.

Body language

She moves in short, purposeful shuffles, with her torso tipped slightly toward whatever has caught her interest. When she is trying to seem grown, she plants both feet and folds her hands behind her back, but her hair continues to drift toward open windows as if pulled by a private breeze. Her pre-speech nose-breath is so consistent that attentive people learn to recognize it as a warning that a difficult question is coming.

Distinguishing features

Long, velvet-thick purple hair that catches tiny points of light even in a room with no visible stars.
Neon-pink eyes that hold a star's reflection for a heartbeat after she looks away.
A small, lopsided shuffle and a slight lean toward open sky.
A careful intake of breath through her nose immediately before speaking.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Ivena is patient enough to watch a moth circle a lamp for an hour, yet impulsive enough to follow a falling star into dangerous country. She is gentle with the frightened and blunt with the self-important. In quiet company she can be solemn and attentive; when embarrassed, she becomes practical to the point of absurdity, asking whether everyone has eaten. She wants to be treated as a child when she is tired, but resents being dismissed as one when she has something important to say.

Alignment
Chaotic good

Quirks

Counts the visible stars in a reflection before crossing a bridge.
Leaves one bite of every meal untouched, explaining that it is 'for whoever comes after.'
Names raindrops by the sound they make when they hit her coat, then forgets the names almost immediately.
Turns her shoes so their toes point north before going to sleep.

Habits

Checks the night sky whenever a conversation becomes emotionally difficult.
Approaches frightened children at their eye level, then addresses adults with startling bluntness.
When overwhelmed, counts visible lights under her breath and loses track of the conversation.
Keeps promises with great seriousness, but sometimes misunderstands what a promise costs.

She gives people time to find their words, but rarely softens the truth once they do.
She is tender toward small living things and oddly unsentimental about grand monuments.
She wants ordinary companionship and is uncomfortable when people kneel.
Her confidence vanishes when asked to make a choice that cannot be undone.

Flaws · 3

Her curiosity can outrun her judgment, especially when something is unfamiliar.
She treats some mortal dangers as temporary because she has watched generations pass.
She sometimes withholds frightening truths to spare people, then struggles to repair the damage.

Fears · 3

That the disappearing stars are being erased because of her awakening.
That Hreth will die before she learns how to keep a promise to him.
Being worshipped as an answer when she is still trying to understand the questions.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants to be invited into ordinary activities without being treated as an omen.
Needs help investigating the vanishing stars before fear makes her act rashly.
Needs someone trustworthy to explain mortal grief and consequences without condescension.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 9 · 25 ft.

Ivena avoids combat and tries to put herself between danger and anyone smaller or less able to flee. She uses cover, keeps her distance, and spends her single Star-Splinter only when someone is in immediate danger. If cornered, she bargains, distracts, or runs rather than fighting to the death.

Newly kindled deity. Ivena can sense the position of visible stars, but cannot alter their paths.
Custom feature, Star-Splinter. Once per long rest, Ivena can make one ranged spell attack with a shard of starlight. On a hit, it deals radiant damage.
Custom feature, Borrowed Divinity. Ivena is a god by origin, not mastery. She can be harmed and killed like a mortal, and her divine nature grants no automatic immunity or resurrection.

Actions

Star-Splinter. Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: radiant damage. Ivena can use this action once per long rest.
Sling. Ivena makes a spell attack with a sling, to hit, range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: bludgeoning damage.

Reactions

Flicker of Warning. When a creature Ivena can see within 30 feet is hit by an attack, she can impose disadvantage on the attack roll if she is not incapacitated. A faint glimmer draws the attacker's eye at the last instant. Once used, this reaction cannot be used again until the start of her next turn.

Services they sell

Can identify visible constellations and describe how they have shifted since her awakening.
Can offer a modest blessing that helps someone orient beneath the night sky.
Can ask the rooftop watchers of Shesh Hollow to shelter or guide travelers.

Rewards they can give

A hand-drawn star map showing a constellation that cannot be seen from the current location.
A short-lived blessing: the recipient knows which way is north beneath an open night sky for seven days.
Ivena's sincere trust, which may bring help from the rooftop watchers of Shesh Hollow.

Equipment

  • Brass star chart (tool)A complicated brass plate etched with shifting lines. It points toward visible stars but cannot predict their movements.
  • Sling and stones (weapon)A child's sling and a pouch of smooth, pale pebbles collected from the salt flats.
  • Water flask (adventuring gear)A little stoppered flask of clean water, which she insists is for 'keeping the sky close.'

Possessions

Brass star chart
Plum traveling coat embroidered with obsolete constellations
Sling and pouch of salt-flat stones
Water flask
A folded paper list of kindnesses she means to repay

Background

For nearly two centuries, Ivena was a nameless glimmer caught in the dark between stars. She watched the world through reflected night skies: in wells, polished shields, and the eyes of people who looked up. Three years ago, a falling star struck the salt flats beyond Shesh Hollow. Its core was a seed of unclaimed divinity, and Ivena reached for it from across the distance. The impact gave her a body, a name, and the startling weight of being one small person in one place. The change was painful and formative: for the first time, she could not see every place at once, and she learned that choosing where to look means leaving something unseen. She was found by Hreth, a weather-worn astronomer who taught her letters and how to eat without mistaking every meal for a new star. Ivena still visits him, though he worries that her growing power will draw the attention of older powers. She has also befriended Ssketh, a suspicious ferryman who ferries her between villages and pretends not to notice that his boat's shadow sometimes points toward the wrong shore. Her present problem is urgent: a cluster of stars she once watched over has begun to vanish from the night, one at a time. She suspects her awakening disturbed something, but does not know whether to confess that fear or keep searching alone.

Role in the story

A fragile divine ally, mystery at the center of a celestial disappearance, and a reminder that immense power can arrive without wisdom or safety. She can guide the party toward the missing stars, but needs them to help investigate what she cannot face alone.

“She watched the world through reflected night skies: in wells, polished shields, and the eyes of people who looked up.”
From their background
Faction
No temple or divine court claims her. The rooftop sky-watchers of Shesh Hollow regard her as a small, uncertain blessing.

Known connections

Hreth, an aging astronomer who found her at the salt flats and taught her how to live in a body. He fears she will be claimed by a temple or a rival power.
Ssketh, a ferryman whose skiff carries Ivena between settlements. He insists he is only helping because she pays in useful weather predictions.
The villagers of Shesh Hollow, who leave saucers of milk and bowls of water on rooftops when strange stars appear.
