At the table

“s vague phrase as a question:”
From how they speak

Voice

A child's clear voice, a little breathy after time outdoors. It carries the blunt rhythm of household questions and the careful enunciation of words she has heard her parents use. She speeds up when she suspects an adult is about to end the conversation.

Her voice has a clear, slightly breathy edge from speaking outdoors in cold air. She clips the ends of practical questions and gives careful weight to unfamiliar German words learned at home. When nervous, she speaks faster, not softer.

Speech patterns

Asks direct questions and expects a direct answer.
Uses 'when' rather than 'if' when discussing her father's return.
Repeats an adult's vague phrase as a question: 'Soon means which day?'
When embarrassed, changes the subject to a practical task.

How to play them

Answer her questions simply and truthfully where possible. Do not promise a return date unless it is known. She responds better to a concrete explanation than a soothing dismissal, and will notice contradictions.

Goal

Get a clear answer about why her father leaves and persuade him to take her along one day.

Motivation

She wants to understand the rules governing her father's departures, not merely be reassured that everything is all right.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A small, sturdy seven-year-old with pale skin that reddens quickly in cold weather. Her light blond hair is cut unevenly at her jaw and keeps slipping out of its pins. She stands squarely when asking a question, then rocks from heel to toe while waiting for an answer. She repeatedly presses two fingers to the stitched cuff of her dress, checking a loose thread she has been told is secure. The skin over her knuckles is dry and rough from winter air and helping with household chores.

Clothing

An older German-style dress sewn by her mother, carefully mended at the hem and cuffs. She wears wool stockings, practical shoes, and a knitted wrap when it is cold. The dress is kept clean but bears the ordinary wear of a child who sits on floors and helps around the house.

Body language

She squares her shoulders to ask difficult questions and fidgets only after the answer begins. When she thinks she is being dismissed, she touches the cuff seam and looks directly at the adult's mouth.

Habitually checks the loose thread at her dress cuff.
Knuckles roughened and reddened by cold weather and chores.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Edelweiß is earnest and persistent, but not fearless. She asks bold questions while an adult is present, then privately worries over the answer. She is protective of Veilchan and sometimes resents having to be the sensible one. With familiar people she can be brisk and funny; when she feels patronized, she turns literal and relentless.

Quirks

Presses two fingers to the dress cuff to check its loose thread whenever an adult changes the subject.
Counts the steps from the door to her usual waiting place, then starts again if interrupted.
Keeps buttons in a pocket and sorts them by how cold they feel.
Repeats new words under her breath until she can say them without stumbling.

Habits

Asks the same question again after a pause, often with one detail changed.
Watches adults' faces when they say her father will be back.
Takes on small household tasks when worried, then insists she was helping rather than waiting.
Tries to keep Veilchan close when one of their parents is preparing to leave.

Traits · 4

Courageous enough to ask what adults avoid, but anxious about the answer.
Protective of her younger sister, yet jealous when Veilchan receives attention.
Proud of her mother's sewing and embarrassed when the dress draws notice.
Wants rules to be fair, though she does not always obey them herself.

Flaws · 3

Persistence can become heedless insistence when someone needs time or privacy.
She interprets uncertainty as withholding and has trouble accepting that adults may not know.
Tries to act older than she is when her sister is frightened.

Fears · 3

That her father will leave without telling her when he will return.
That adults have decided she is too young to be told the truth.
That Veilchan will forget their father while he is away.

Wants and needs · 3

A plain explanation of her father's work and absences.
Reliable reassurance that does not turn into a promise adults cannot keep.
Time and attention that are not given only when she behaves like a grown-up.

Combat

HP 0

She is a child, not a combatant. She avoids a fight, seeks cover, and runs toward a trusted adult. If trapped, she lashes out only to make room to escape.

Changeling. The Dreaming character. No kith or supernatural birthright is assumed for Edelweiß; her parents' kiths do not automatically determine hers.
Child's stubborn persistence. custom narrative trait, not a rules-granted power. She keeps asking a question until an adult answers plainly or sends her away.

Actions

Scramble Away. If cornered, she kicks, bites, or throws whatever is in reach, then tries to flee to her mother. No damage rating is assigned; resolve with the Storyteller's normal rules for an untrained child.

Reactions

Ask for the Exact Thing. If an adult offers a vague reassurance, she asks for a day, place, or other detail that can be checked.
Shield Veilchan. If Veilchan is threatened or distressed, Edelweiß puts herself between her sister and the source of trouble, despite her size.

Equipment

  • Wool dress (clothing)Hand-sewn by Fantasia in an older German style; mended and carefully kept.
  • Knitted wrap (clothing)A short length of wool for warmth, usually folded over one arm indoors.

Possessions

Her mother's hand-sewn older German-style dress.
A folded scrap of paper on which she marks her father's absences.
A small wooden button she keeps in a pocket for worrying between her fingers.

Background

Edelweiß is the eldest daughter of Anja and John Kauffman. Her parents married before she was born. In the hidden world, her father is Bruke Von Braken, a Redcap of the Autumn Court, and her mother is Fantasia Von Braken, a Sluagh of the Autumn Court. Edelweiß has grown up with the household's silences and half-explanations, but she knows her father leaves for work with the U.S. Army and does not accept that this is a sufficient answer. Her mother sewed her an older German-style dress, which Edelweiß treats as both her best clothing and a kind of armor. Her younger sister Veilchan is still young enough to be distracted by games; Edelweiß is not. The change came when Bruke left for an extended stretch and Edelweiß waited at the door with her small coat on, certain he would take her if she asked often enough. He did not. Since then she has tried to learn the exact reasons adults leave, and the exact conditions under which they return. In 2026, she is still asking, and her parents have not found an answer that satisfies her.

Role in the story

A family-centered child NPC whose questions expose the cost of Bruke's absences. She can draw the characters into a domestic mystery or force them to confront what they know and what they are willing to tell a child.
