Appearance
Nera Vale is a narrow-shouldered human woman who moves like someone always listening for a second heartbeat under the water. Her hands are rough with rope burns and ink stains, and her dark cloak is patched with temple blue on one side and canal watch gray on the other. One sleeve is sewn with tiny copper bells that never seem to ring until she wants them to. She wears a reed charm braided into her belt beside a vial of black river mud, yet her boots are meticulously polished, almost ceremonial. Her face is striking in an uneasy way, with a calm mouth and eyes that look perpetually startled by what they already know.
“Low, careful, and exact, with the cadence of someone used to calling instructions over wind and water. When anxious she speaks faster, then deliberately slows herself down after every third sentence.”

Distinguishing Features
A thin white scar across her throat from a rope snapped in a flood rescue.
Copper bells sewn into one sleeve that are tuned to temple intervals.
A half-melted candle stub she keeps in a pouch, said to have burned blue for three nights.
Her left hand is always faintly stained with canal-black silt that never fully washes off.
Voice
“Soft but urgent, with a river-bred steadiness that tightens when she talks about the ford or the old rites.”
Clothing
A damp-resistant canal coat over a temple sash, slate trousers tucked into polished boots, leather gloves with the fingertips cut away for rope work, and a watch captain's whistle on a silver chain.
Body Language
Nera stands with one shoulder slightly forward as if bracing against a current, and she keeps her fingers near knots, buckles, and door latches. When frightened she becomes very still, then suddenly efficient, as though her body has already decided what must be done.
