“ambitious stories”
Voice
A dry, chest-forward voice with a rasp like surf-worn wood; his breath stays measured even after exertion. His work as a teacher gives him a clean, carrying cadence, while years of listening to the grove make him leave abrupt gaps for sounds other people miss. He speaks louder when distance demands it, never as a show of anger.
His sentences are clipped and plain, built around concrete images from fishing, weather, and the body's balance. He speaks Common with an Astellian cadence shaped by years of giving instructions over wind, surf, and sparring noise. He rarely cushions a truth with ceremony, but his jokes often arrive in the same flat delivery as his advice.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He first decides whether visitors are frightened, greedy, or simply lost, and adjusts his approach accordingly. He offers practical help to honest people, blunt warnings to the careless, and a ridiculous test to anyone who claims to be an expert. He will not trade healing leaves for wealth, but may grant them in return for a service that protects the grove or its neighbors.
Goal
Keep the grove alive and freely accessible to those in need, while finding a way to make its protection outlast his own presence.
Motivation
He wants to preserve the grove without becoming a jailer of the people it is meant to help. He also wants his former pupil Targan to learn that strength is not the same as permission.
Appearance
Chu'ro looks like an Astellian man shaped by decades of sun, rain, and patient exertion, with olive skin faintly stippled by pale flecks like lichen. His white hair is thick, coarse, and cut unevenly at the nape; he combs it back with his fingers and leaves one stubborn lock standing upright. His face is broad and deeply lined, but his eyes are quick and bright. He stands with his weight on the balls of his feet, heels barely touching earth, as if every conversation might turn into a spar. The surprising detail is that he wears a tiny, carefully folded paper sun pinned inside his collar, replacing it whenever rain ruins it. He leaves the impression of a man who could catch a falling leaf, then argue that it fell on purpose.
Clothing
A sleeveless, indigo-dyed wrap jacket over a faded saffron shirt, loose charcoal trousers, and woven sandals he removes before entering the grove's oldest clearing. His clothes are patched neatly, but he refuses to replace a fraying sash that once belonged to his sister.
Body language
He waits balanced forward on the balls of his feet, hands loose and open, often rocking as if listening through the soles of his feet. While joking, he tilts his head and watches for the moment a prank lands. When angered, he does not loom or pace; he becomes still, plants both heels, and gives the other person his full attention.

Distinguishing features
Personality
15 traits and drivesChu'ro is fiercely candid but not deliberately cruel; he believes a useful truth is kinder than a comforting lie, then sometimes discovers too late that timing matters. He is playful and enjoys elaborate pranks, yet takes no pleasure in fear or injury when someone is truly vulnerable. In quiet seasons he is lazy, distractible, and content to let others solve small problems. When danger threatens the grove or the helpless, he becomes sharply attentive and dependable.

Combat
AC 22 · HP 180 · 70 ft.He begins by watching an opponent's habits and asking an inconvenient question. He uses speed, positioning, and Stunning Strike to interrupt dangerous foes, redirects attacks toward open ground, and avoids lethal force unless someone threatens the grove or a defenseless person. Against multiple attackers he uses mobility and the shockwave technique to scatter them. He spends ki carefully unless the grove itself is at stake.

Background
Chu'ro Maiz was born to Astellian fishers on Beria, long before the present principality's borders were drawn. As a young man, he earned a reputation for winning contests without striking first, and for telling patrons exactly why their expensive plans would fail. During a drought, soldiers tried to cut down the grove's oldest tree for its water-rich heartwood. Chu'ro stood between them and the roots, but a spear thrust meant for him struck his sister, Sava. She survived, though the wound left her unable to walk far. Chu'ro's grief became fury, and fury nearly turned the grove into a killing ground. The spirits of the grove intervened, offering him strength and years beyond mortal measure on the condition that he guard the living sanctuary, not merely avenge it. He accepted, then spent decades learning that protection sometimes means letting people leave with a warning instead of a broken jaw. Sava now lives in the coastal hamlet of Kest, where she grows medicinal herbs and writes him blunt letters he is bad at answering. A former pupil, Targan, has become a celebrated fighter and wants Chu'ro to leave the grove for a public challenge. Meanwhile, a Reunian magistrate's agents have begun mapping the grove's water and rare plants. Chu'ro claims these are outside concerns, but has already sabotaged their survey markers and quietly sent food to displaced villagers.
Role in the story
A formidable teacher, source of rare healing, and reluctant ally whose apparent indifference hides a fierce sense of responsibility. He can offer the party insight into Beria's spiritual history, but the grove's weakening seal may force him to ask them for help.

- Faction
- Bound by oath to the spirit realm's Root-Witness and the sacred grove on Beria; no allegiance to Reunia's court.
