Yaro
Yaro
At the table
Voice
His voice has the bright projection of a child accustomed to speaking across windy courtyards, with a faint dry rasp from cold mountain air. He draws breath through his nose when concentrating, almost noiselessly. When startled, the breath snags and makes the cracked whistle at his belt give a tiny chirp, an involuntary tell he finds deeply irritating.
Yaro speaks in a quick, clear voice shaped by years of calling across roof bridges and open courtyards. His consonants are crisp, and he tends to give directions in short bursts. When rattled, his breath catches high in his chest and his clay whistle chirps; he tries to disguise the sound, usually unsuccessfully.

How to play them
Treat him as a capable child, not a mascot or a weapon. Give him clear choices and honest answers. He responds warmly to practical help, patient humor, and people who protect others without expecting praise. Pressuring him with destiny or authority makes him suspicious; threatening civilians makes him intervene immediately.
Goal
Find Nima, uncover why the storm rite was rushed, and make sure no one uses his gift to dominate the Saffron Reach.
Motivation
Protect people without taking away their choices, and find a way to live with the fact that good intentions did not prevent the monastery disaster.
Appearance
Yaro is a small, wiry boy with a runner's spring in his calves and the deceptively steady balance of someone who has spent years on narrow roof ridges. His skin is warm brown, his head shaved close except for a soft, dark tuft at the crown, and his eyes are a clear, attentive hazel. Fine pale lines of ritual ink curl over his scalp and down his arms, rubbed faint at the wrists by his sleeves. He moves in sudden glides and abrupt stops, as if the air has offered him a handhold. A palm-sized, cracked clay whistle hangs from his cord belt; its rim is polished smooth where his thumb worries it. The surprising detail: he keeps a tiny, carefully folded paper menagerie tucked into his sash, and makes new animals whenever he has to wait.
Clothing
Layered rust-red and ochre monk wraps, loose at the shoulders and tied close at the waist so they cannot snag. The hems are patched in mismatched cloth. He wears soft-soled sandals and a weather-faded blue scarf that belonged to his teacher.
Body language
He leans into a conversation with his whole chest, then rocks back on his heels as if testing an invisible current. His fingers keep returning to the clay whistle at his belt. When rattled, his breath catches high in his ribs and the whistle gives a faint, involuntary chirp; he immediately tries to cover it with a cough.

AC 19 · HP 180 · 65 ft.Yaro prioritizes escape routes, protecting bystanders, and separating attackers from anyone they threaten. He uses speed, Deflect Missiles, and pushes to control space rather than to injure. He avoids lethal strikes and will spend ki to disengage or shield an ally. If someone endangers children or traps civilians, his restraint becomes difficult to maintain, but he still tries to end the fight with a disarm, a fall, or a forced retreat.

Background
Yaro was raised among the high-roofed wind monasteries of the Saffron Reach, where novice monks learned to read weather by the movement of laundry and to cross ravines on narrow bridges. His teacher, Sister Sheshi, found him as an infant in a reed basket after a storm had unroofed the eastern shrine. At six, Yaro was chosen for a dangerous rite meant to quiet a mountain storm. The rite went wrong: he survived by instinctively turning the gale aside, but the monastery's bell tower fell and his closest friend, Nima, was lost in the landslide. Yaro stopped treating his gift as a game after that. He left the monastery with Sheshi to find Nima, whose body was never recovered, and to learn why the rite had been rushed. Now he travels between hamlets, calming floods, carrying messages over impassable roads, and refusing to let adults turn his abilities into a weapon. Sheshi wants him to return before his training is complete; the traveling healer Duma thinks he should choose his own path. A local magistrate, Besh, has begun paying informants to find the boy before the next storm season.
Role in the story
A powerful but young ally whose search for a missing friend draws the party into a dispute between a monastery, a fearful magistrate, and villages increasingly battered by unnatural storms. He can change the course of a fight, but needs adults who will respect his judgment without making him bear every burden.
