Appearance
Neska Tal is a compact, hard-muscled woman whose movements have the abrupt economy of a striking animal. Her skin is weathered bronze, textured by dust, sun, and old cold, while her jaw is broad enough to make every expression seem like a challenge. When she eats, she tears food with her front teeth in quick, wolfish bites, then holds eye contact with whoever is watching. Her smile exposes a slightly crowded row of blunt teeth, unexpectedly almost tender in contrast to her violent reputation. She never scans a room normally. Her eyes jump first to hands, then exits, then the faces of the least powerful people present. She wears a necklace of polished knucklebones, yet she handles delicate objects with startling gentleness. The impression she leaves is of a lit fuse trying to convince everyone it is merely a piece of cord.
“Neska speaks in clipped, unsentimental sentences. She favors concrete verbs, dry insults, and questions that force a choice.”

Distinguishing Features
Her front teeth are broad and slightly crowded, giving her smile a predatory but strangely youthful quality.
Her gaze checks hands, exits, and powerless witnesses before settling on the person speaking.
She wears a necklace made from polished knucklebones, each carved with the name of someone who defied a First Hand order.
Her laugh starts as a silent convulsion in her shoulders before becoming a sudden bark that makes nearby animals lift their heads.
Voice
“A low, rough contralto with a dry edge, like stone dragged across a whetstone. She rarely raises her volume, relying instead on sudden pauses that make listeners lean closer.”
Clothing
A sleeveless gray-blue riding coat patched with mismatched hide, a red sash bearing the broken hand sigil of her supporters, layered linen wraps around her forearms, dust-stained trousers, and soft-soled boots reinforced with strips of hammered copper
Body Language
Neska leans forward when listening, as if physically restraining herself from interrupting. Her hands remain open until she decides someone has lied, then one thumb hooks beneath her belt and her knuckles whiten. During anger, she becomes unnaturally still except for a slow grinding of her teeth.
